Repurpose Old Jars Into Holiday Decor

I adore old, shiny things — costume jewelry, old silver tea services, end caps at stores this time of year with a plethora of faux mercury glass. Cue Freddy Mercury singing, “I Want It All.” But, being the hoarder that I am, this year I’m trying to repurpose more than I buy, which is how this little project came about.

I was just looking for a metallic look so I used silver spray paint because that’s what my craft store had in stock. However, if you’re going for more of a mercury glass look, use looking-glass spray instead. It has more of a mirror quality. You can see these jars lighting up the mantel I designed for the Blogger Challenge with Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores and HGTV Holiday House.

First things first: Gather those old jars you’ve been hoarding in your cupboards. You finally have something to use them for! Cover your workspace with newspaper.

Step 2

Next, mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Lightly mist your first jar.

Immediately follow up with a layer of spray paint. I used Krylon’s metallic silver for this project. Again, if you are looking to get more of a vintage, mercury-glass effect, you’ll want to use looking-glass spray.

Step 4

Let the jars dry for about 10 minutes. Then, repeat the process. This time you will not let the paint dry.

Step 5

Instead, spray with the water + vinegar mixture again, and use the paper towel to dab away some of the paint. This effect will make it look a little more vintage and add a great place for light to show through.

Step 6

Let cure at least 24 hours before using candles inside, and remember to never leave lit candles in a room alone.
