Hunger Games Nails: Catching Fire

Hunger Games Glitter Nails

Are you ready for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire premiere? More importantly: Do you have your outfit planned? Chances are the theater won’t let you sit in a seat with pea green painted skin a la Octavia. And who wants to commit to Effie’s pink mound of teased hair? That’s got to be heavy.

Here’s some easy Hunger Games nail art you can do Thursday night that shows your District 12 spirit but won’t make you look like a Capitol freak on the way to the theater. This ombre glitter design is a more abstract interpretation of  ”The Girl on Fire” dress.

OK, I know. In the book it says Katniss has tiny flames on her nails when she goes into the arena. But you know what nails with flames really look like? A Harley-Davidson decal. It’s a bit tacky for me, and I’m not spending money on nail art tools that look like kebab skewers. Also, I do not have time to devote hours marbling flames on my nails, and I bet you don’t either.

Hunger Games Nail Polish

All you need is black polish, two glitter polishes and a clear top coat.

Click through the photos below to create your own Girl on Fire nails. Pair it with a signature Katniss braid and a mockingjay necklace and you’ve got a subtle, sophisticated fan girl look.

Step 1

Open GalleryBlack Base CoatApply a thin black base coat. I used Essie’s “Licorice.” Apply a second coat if the black color does not appear opaque, but make these coats very thin as you’ll be adding a lot of glitter layers.  Allow this coat to dry.

Step 2

Open GalleryHunger Games Nails First Copper LayerStart about 3/4 of the way down the nail with your copper glitter polish and brush a very thin coat up toward the end of the nail. Make sure you buy clear nail polish with glitter in it and not metallic polish with glitter as you want the black base coat to be visible through the glitter. I used Sally Hansen’s “Copper Penny.” Allow this coat to dry.

Step 3

Step 4

Open GalleryHunger Games Nail Gold LayerWith the gold glitter polish, brush the very tips of your nails with one or two coats. I used a polish from Forever 21. This will create a more dramatic color gradient and represent the different colors of fire. Allow this coat to dry.

Step 5

Open GalleryHunger Games NailsApply a thin layer of clear polish to prevent chipping. I used O.P.I.’s top coat. Allow this coat to dry.

Step 6

Open GalleryHunger Games Glitter Nail ArtGive yourself an additional hour for your nails to dry. The top may feel fine but underneath it’s still setting. You can speed up the process with a hair dryer but use the lowest setting so you don’t mess up the glitter. They should be dry enough to Instagram though.
