Holiday How-To: Make Tomato Trellis Trees

Turn your tomato garden upside down and make use of those metal trellises this winter by transforming them into mini trees! Bring them inside and let them flank your fireplace, or use them to decorate your front entryway. Wherever you put them this holiday season, you’re bound to love this easy DIY project. (If you like this project, you’ll probably also like making mini trees using yarn.)

Make your own holiday decor using a tomato trellis, vines, and holiday lights!

Step 1

Open GalleryWrap an upside down tomato trellis with vines.Gather your materials. Flip the tomato trellis upside down, and unfurl and extend the vines you’re using for this project. Beginning at the wide end of the trellis, wrap the vines around the metal supports.

Step 2

Open GalleryTie the vines to the trellis as you wrap using short lengths of floral wire.Use floral wire pieces to tightly attach the vine at periodic intervals. It works well if you rotate the metal trellis in a circle over and over again, instead of trying to wrangle the vines around the trellis itself.

Step 3

Open GalleryWrap your finished tree with a strand of holiday lights.Once the trellis is completely wrapped, finish it off with a strand of holiday lights, leaving enough of a tail to reach the nearest electrical outlet.

Step 4

Open GalleryEnjoy the glow from your DIY holiday trellis decor!Display the tree indoors or out, and enjoy its warm glow all season long!
