How to Make a Color-Blocked Pom-Pom Wreath

Make a colorblocked yarn wreath this holiday season!
I usually gravitate towards natural wood or vine wreaths when it comes to front door decor (even once making one out of a picture frame), but not this year. Bucking personal tradition, I’m embracing the POM-POM, letting some color exude from the all-white paneled door leading into our entryway. The green is great, the yarn proves soft and wonderful, and the color-blocked (similar to ombre) technique turned out even better than my original vision. See how I made it here!

Step 1

Open GalleryMake a holiday wreath using a foam canvas, yarn, and greening pins from the floral section.Assemble your materials. For the scale of my door, a 16″ green foam wreath was perfect, and I gravitated towards a series of greens yarns as my main color scheme.

Step 2

Open GalleryMake lots of yarn pom-poms for your wreath.Make a lot of pom-poms using your own two hands, all of your yarn, and a pair of scissors. Depending on the size and number you need, this is the most time-consuming part of the project. If you don’t know how to make yarn pom-poms, check out my short video on DIY Network’s Instagram site and consult these instructions on HGTV.com. I found that 210 yards of yarn yielded 50 poms … that’s about 4 yards per piece!

Step 3

Open GalleryPin the pom-poms into place on the wreath using floral greening pins.Use the the greening pins to attach each pom-pom to the base in a design of your own. Make sure they are dense enough so that you don’t see the underlying base! I ended up with the color-blocking scheme after trying several different arrangements. My original plan of mixing them together ended up looking a little too “latch hook” for my liking.

Step 4

Open GalleryAdd details to your wreath. My details are in the form of fake tallow berry branches and a natural ribbon. If you desire, add in additional floral accents. I chose to poke in some faux white tallow berries for contrast against the green, and tied a bow using a natural-colored cloth ribbon.
