How to Make a Giant Car Bow

Car with Giant Bow

My wife, Lish, got a new car. While she bought it herself, she was very disappointed that it didn’t come with a giant bow on it. Leave it to Nick to fix the situation. I did some research on the trusty internet and found a few sites that sold them and a few that kinda told you how to make them, but nothing was a really great tutorial. So I figured I would just scale up a smaller bow. It worked. And to top it off, this was a complete surprise for her. See how I made it below.

Step 1

Open GalleryProduct Shot Gather all of your supplies. I initially went to the craft store to purchase wide ribbon. My options were limited so I found 12-inch nylon netting that came in a variety of colors. It is like a coarser brother to tulle and was found in the wedding aisle. I grabbed silver and blue to complement the car color.

Step 2

Open GalleryStep 1: Cut Loops Select the size of your bow. I wanted my bow to fill up the hood of the car so I went for 5 feet across. To make a loop, cut your ribbon slightly longer than double your final size. So I cut 10-foot (plus a little) lengths. I made 6 loops, 3 blue and 3 silver.

Step 3

Open GalleryStep 2: Stack Loops Stack all of your loops, alternating and rotating colors as you go up. (If you have all the same color, there’s no need to alternate.) Have all the ends of the loops fall in the center of your pile and overlap them slightly.

Step 4

Open GalleryStep 3: Tie up loops Once you have a nice stack of loops, cut off a length of wire or grab a large twist-tie. You want to bundle the loops in the center.

Step 5

Open GalleryBow on top of Car You are basically done. The artistic part comes from fluffing the bow to look like … a bow. To get the wrapping part of the bow, drape a long length of ribbon from one side over the hood and back to the other side. Then place your finished bow on top.

Now you just need a camera and a surprised significant other. Bonus points if you actually bought the car.

Materials

  • 12″ wide ribbon (1 – 2 colors)
  • Small diameter wire or industrial twist-tie

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Wire Cutters
