Gutters All Mucked Up? Clean Them With This DIY Tool

cleaning high gutters with an air compressor

Did you forget to clean your gutters out after fall of 2012? I did. It has been causing havoc at the house so I decided to make it right. My ladder is exactly the height of my gutter, but it is rickety as all get out. I’ve hired people in the past but completely dropped the ball on that this time. So, now I am left to my wits.
Air Powered Gutter Cleaner
I did some searching and found that you can clean your gutters with compressed air, or pressurized water. Since I don’t own a pressure washer and do own a small air compressor, I opted for compressed air. Below is a tutorial about how I made the tool.

But I must be honest. My air compressor doesn’t have a lot of power. It’s maybe 3-gallon with not a lot of air flow. So the experiment really didn’t clean out my heavily littered gutters. It did move dry leaves and some dust but my muck was just too heavy. I do think it would clean out less neglected gutters. Also, the tool is a little heavy and a bit wobbly. So you’ve been warned. As with almost any tool, make sure to wear safety glasses when using.

If you try this or have tried another way, let me know in the comments!

Step 1

 Open GalleryProducts & Tools

Gather all your tools and parts. There are probably a million ways to do this so tweak as you see fit. I added some thread sealing tape, not pictured.

Step 2

 Open GalleryPicture of Bracket

Place your shelf bracket at the end of one EMT piece. Mark for the two 1/4″ holes on the EMT.

Step 3

 Open GalleryDrill Your Holes

Drill each of the holes with a 1/4″ drill bit. Take your time as metal takes longer to cut than wood. If the drill bit slips, tap an awl with a hammer in the center of the hole. This will give the drill bit a spot to grab.

Step 4

Place a washer on each bolt and place through the bracket, then through the EMT. Tighten a nut down on each bolt using the wrench.

Step 5

 Open GalleryAdding a U-Bolt

On the other end of the bracket, mark two 1/4″ holes for the U-bolt. It may help to remove the bracket from the EMT while doing this, or you can hold it with your feet to keep it from spinning. Insert the U-bolt and add nuts to hold it in place. Don’t tighten all the way yet.

Step 6

 Open GalleryAdding the air line

Next add some thread sealing tape to the male end of the coiled hose. Tighten on the nozzle (using a male air line connector) with wrench. Slip the nozzle into the U-bolt and finish tightening the 1/4″ nuts. Finally, wrap the coiled airline down the EMT.

Step 7

Open Gallery2nd EMT Piece with airline

Set aside the top piece of the gutter cleaner and pick up the second piece of EMT. Place the rubber hose at the top of the EMT and zip-tie it down the length of the EMT. It won’t go all the way. Cut the ends of the zip tie with diagonal cutters.

Step 8

 Open GalleryThe Trigger

Add your trigger to the rubber hose, making sure to use thread tape. Zip-tie it into place and cut off ends. To the other end of the trigger, add your connector for the air compressor. Making sure to use thread tape here too.

Step 9

 Open GalleryConnecting EMT

Add your EMT connector to the top of the second piece of EMT (near the hose end) and connect to your first piece of EMT (opposite the bracket). Tighten down as hard as you can.

Step 10

 Open GalleryConnect Airlines

Connect the coiled hose to the rubber hose, using thread tape, and tighten everything up. At this point, you are ready to go. Good luck, and I hope this is helpful.

I too am in Louisiana, and I have found that a good quality pressure washer gets the job done easily and efficiently.

I remember having clogged gutters in Louisiana. My problem was pine needles. I was able to use my 6 ft aluminum ladder and pistol grip on my hose set to fine/needle spray. I started spraying directly in the gutter, near the downspout to get the main clog out first, and then went further away from it to get the rest. Did not need to purchase anything, or do any drilling.

Hi Nick, I want to tell you one thing that you write a very different content on gutter cleaning this is really impressive work. I like the step by step working procedure of the gutter cleaning I will follow this next time. As I was not so much aware of the cleaning that’s why last time I hired gutter masters for the cleaning purpose.
