DIY Thread Wrapped Earrings

DIY Thread Wrapped EarringsIf you catch me on a normal weekday, chances are I’m in some variation of the same outfit: skinny jeans, low-heeled booties, and a comfortable, cozy top. Simple jewelry, nothing fancy. Every once in a while, I get to go to events that give me the chance to get a little fancy with myself. In those instances, I almost always have a pretty good idea of the look I want and can pull an outfit together pretty easily. But I invariably get hung up on accessories — I don’t have a huge collection of jewelry, so I have to go hunt down something to finish off the look. It’s usually pretty easy to run out to one of my favorite boutiques and grab something, but sometimes, what I want just isn’t there.

Last month, this exact scenario played out as I was pulling my act together to head out to Alt Summit in Salt Lake City. Alt Summit is THE blogging conference for design, fashion, food, photography — and the rooms are jam packed with amazing bloggers ranging from huge VIPs to new bloggers like myself. I wanted to look GOOD. I knew exactly what I wanted to wear, but could NOT find the right earrings. So, what did I do? I made ‘em. In the airport. On the way to Salt Lake City. And yes, I got a LOT of funny looks, but it was worth it. You may have seem this photo if you follow DIY Network on Instagram.DIY Thread Wrapped Earrings

That’s me, crafting away on a layover. But the earrings turned out great and I got a ton of compliments on them, so I’m here today to show you how you can DIY a chic pair of custom earrings for your next high fashion to-do.

For those curious as to what, exactly, I wore with the earrings — here you go. My day one ALT look: simple with a bright twist.

Step 1

Open GalleryDIY Thread Wrapped EarringsI knew I wanted my earrings to coordinate with my black-on-black outfit with pops of fuchsia, so I grabbed a spool of black thread and a spool of fuchsia thread at my local JoAnn Fabric Store. I found an inexpensive pair of half hoop earrings at Target – the fact that the hoops were open made it WAY easier to do this project. I’m not sure I would have finished the earrings if I’d had to loop the thread through a closed hoop each time. Yikes.

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Throw on “House of Cards,” settle in and just make sure you’re wrapping in a way that slightly overlaps so none of the silver shows through. Keep a lot of tension on the thread so that your wrapping is tight. If you see an area that you missed and catch it quickly, just wrap your way back up, cover it and then keep going.

Step 5
