Every year around this time, as the temperature drops and the wind picks up, I get chapped lips. I know you do, too. And then I start scrounging around in the bottom of my purse and my bathroom cabinets to find the myriad tins of lip balm I’ve bought over the years. You know, the amazing-smelling stuff that costs $10 a pop? This year, I found that I’d run out, and instead of buying more, I decided to make my own instead. I was amazed at how easy it was, and more importantly, that I could use a slow cooker to do it. Yes, a slow cooker! As part of my foray into the world of slow cooker crafts, I found out that a slow cooker is the perfect vessel for melting the wax needed for DIY beeswax lip balm.
This recipe for lip balm uses beeswax, coconut oil, almond oil and peppermint oil. You could change up the recipe by using apricot kernel oil instead of almond oil, and lavender or orange oil instead of peppermint, but I think this recipe makes a nice, cooling lip balm for winter. I really like the consistency and texture, too. It’s not goopy or gloppy like some gel balms, but instead gives your lips a thin, smooth protective layer that actually stays put during the day.
