Bright Lights, Dinner Party: Mood Lighting With Wi-Fi Light Bulbs

Wifi Enabled Lightbulbs

What makes a good dinner party? Good food, killer cocktails, great company and a perfectly curated playlist are on my list of must-haves. But have you considered your lighting to be an important factor? Whether you’re trying to go dim-lit romantic or club-like strobes, lighting can have a dramatic effect on the mood you set in the room.

Thanks to modern Wi-Fi-enabled light bulbs, the options for creating mood lighting for your next party have gotten pretty sophisticated, and don’t require you to remortgage your house: In a recent episode of Smart Simple Solved, I walk you through how to set up wireless bulbs and strips, then have them dim, flash and change color, controlling them all from an app on your phone. Imagine the lights reflect your favorite team colors at Superbowl time? Or they mimic the sunset outside for your next backyard barbeque. The options are endless and easy — this way you can keep the appetizers and cocktails coming and your guests will just know that your party has killer ambiance. Let me show you how this works.

Step 1

Open GalleryThis system requires a bridge that plugs (a) into the wall, and (b) into your wireless router. This allows multiple bulbs and light strips to connect to the system and talk to the app controller.

Next, decide where you want the bulbs and simply replace your old “dumb” bulbs with the new Wi-Fi-enabled ones.

Step 3

These light strips just require an outlet, and then they connect to the system the same way the wireless bulbs do. I decided I wanted to use them to line my bookshelves…

The app provides simple instructions for adding each bulb and strip to the system. Give them each a name (ie. “Lower shelf strip” or “side table lamp”) so you know what’s what, then have fun creating different lighting moods!
