Wednesday the 23rd is National Hot Dog Day, the day in which to not only serve and eat hot dogs, but also to celebrate summer, the outdoors, campfires in big backyard fire pits, Americana, and the most impractically large grills that you can get your meat-loving hands on. (To my vegetarian friends, don’t miss out — celebrate with one of the delightful meatless varieties sold in stores, or grill up some carrot dogs!)
For real hot dog inspiration, all you have to do is think outside the classic ketchup and relish. Serve up some artisan-style hot dog toppings to turn your red/white/turkey/carrot/tofu meal into a total culinary experience. Po’ Boy or Vidalia Onion Hot Dogs, anyone?
Swap out the classic roll for a taco shell and voilà, taco dog.

If you’re already thinking about how you can make a big to-do out of this holiday, buy a lot of hot dogs, have your friends each bring a topping of choice, and vote on your favorite combinations. Can’t go wrong, can only over-indulge.
Spruce up the patio with extra seating and party decorations (check out this video for inspiration on making a pretty outdoor kitchen space). If you’re looking for more outdoor patio inspiration, browse through this gallery.
