5 Boozy Father’s Day Gift Ideas

1. Make an Eccentric Piece of Gear

If you have had to witness any “Dad jokes,” you know what kind of humor they like. Why not build them a crazy piece of gear based on their favorite cocktail? It can either be functional or not, as long as its from the heart (all to together now … Awwwwwww).

Above is the Quadshaker (patent pending … not really) that I built to shake 4 mini-cocktails at once. It kinda works, but even if it doesn’t work, it’s totally a conversation starter.

2. Make a Gift Set of His Favorite Cocktail

This idea of a boxed set for cocktails came to me for my groomsmen’s gift at my wedding. It couldn’t be easier. All you need is some high density foam from a craft store (2″ or so), a nice thin cardboard box with lid and some rich fabric. Trace and cut out the shapes in the foam with a very sharp utility knife. Then cover in fabric and put in the box. Above, you can see a gin and tonic gift set with a duct tape flask from jDUCT.

3. Make Him a Bottle of Sweet Vermouth for Manhattans

Making your own liquors and mixers is pretty easy. I tried my hand at sweet vermouth and it was a moderate success. Select an ingredient from his favorite cocktail and see if you can make it yourself. Obviously, it’s not legal to make your own booze (unless you live in New Zealand) but vermouth, maraschino cherries, grenadine, liqueurs and many mixers you can all bottle yourself.

The ingredients for sweet vermouth take some prep and you might be out of time for Father’s Day. But there are many other opportunities. Try your hand at grenadine if he likes drinks that include it.

4. Buy Him a Cool Piece of Gear, New or Vintage

Most Dads love gadgets. Why not get him an ice baller, fancy muddler, artwork for his bar or a vintage serving piece. Check out the bartender’s supplier of choice, Cocktail Kingdom, or your local vintage shop.

5. Make Him a Great Drink Like a Mai Tai in Pineapple

Sometimes your Father just needs to sit back and relax. Why not make him a tropical drink and give him the day off to relax in the hammock? Hollowing out a pineapple is incredibly easy when you find the right tool. Go to your local kitchen supply or housewares store and ask for a pineapple corer. It’s a 10″ or so device with a handle on one end and a sharp disk on the bottom. It’s as easy as chopping off the top and twisting the corer into the pineapple. Remove the core and you are ready to roll.

The classic mai tai is two parts good rum to one part curacao (or triple sec). You flavor that with orgeat (an almond flavoring), simple syrup and/or any number of juices (passion fruit, lime, orange, grapefruit etc). I like lime, simple syrup and orgeat.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Father’s Day. Please share if you make or find any of these gifts for your Dads.
