Good to Know: Gussied Up Guest Rooms

We’ve all done it. We think “I’ll just throw that in the spare room for now…” and in the blink of an eye, what used to be an oasis for company looks like an indoor garage sale.Guest Room Blog Laurie MarchInstead of asking your mother-in-law to spoon your treadmill, it might be a good idea to clear some stuff out and set up a sweet suite to welcome your guests. If you’re a little unsure about where to start, I’ve got you covered. My buddy Dan Pashman and I are here to help you set up an inviting space for overnight company. Check out our Good to Know guest room guidelines.

I think it’s safe to say that if you try out a couple of those tricks, your guests will be feeling pretty special this year. If you’re looking to do even more, I’ve got a few more ideas up my sleeve to help you create a comfortable spot for the ones you love.Make a Cheat SheetIf you host overnight guests regularly and/or let people stay in your home while you’re away, it can be very helpful to write up a printable sheet listing all your home’s information. When they need to get online at 2 a.m., it will benefit both of you if they can find the wireless passcode on their own. If your house has tricky alarm systems, kitchen gadgets, Internet and cable service or even just an area of the house no one should trespass in – making a cheat sheet can save the day. Leave a copy by the bed and get a good night’s sleep yourself.Guest Room Blog Laurie MarchGive ‘Em SpaceI think there are two kinds of people in the world: those who can happily live out of a suitcase and those who must unpack and organize in order to stay sane. For that latter group, it’s imperative to leave some empty drawer, shelf or closet space in your guest room. Letting them know its available to them will make them feel cared about and welcome regardless of whether they use it. Plus, when you give people the room to stay tidy, you have a better chance at hosting tidy guests.Guest Bed Laurie March BlogTowel TonesWhite bed linens and towels are perfect for almost any guest rooms — you can find these crisp linens in hotels across the planet. When your guests stay with you, however, they tend to be a little more concerned about your belongings than a hotel’s impersonal items. A dark face cloth will allow ladies (or men who wear guy-liner) wipe off their make-up without worrying that they’re ruining your towel. A vacation should be stress free, so give them at least one darker face towel that lets them scrub their faces without fretting.  Ben Franklin said “Fish and house guests smell after three days,” but I bet he didn’t set up a guest suite as nice as the one you’ll put together. When you have a thoughtful, well-planned room for your guests, they’ll be able visit with your family without interfering with your household’s normal routine. So light up your vacancy sign and let the good times roll. You’re ready for them.Need more guest room inspiration? Check out these photos from last year’s Blog Cabin and take a video tour of the guest bedroom featuring yours truly.

  7. I agree! As a frequent traveler and guest, I appreciate darker towels and wash clothes. I wear a lot of makeup and sometimes, too, I've just colored my hair. This tip is a MUST :)

OOH hair color is such a good point! A mid-tone or darker towel can really help with that. Although what a quirky conversation to have with guests –

Me: "Miss Wilson, your hair is looking fabulous! Too good, almost. Should I… I mean… Oh here."

So much easier to just tuck the right options into a guest suite and let guests sort it out themselves :) :)
