13 Ways to Repurpose Old Books

Are you a bibliophile with a penchant for the handmade? Then this post’s for you! My bookish sensibilities are no secret — I always carry a book in my purse, I started my own book club, and recently I’ve been swooning over some repurposed books that may need to make their way into my collection.

It all started when I met Jacob at Maker Faire and completely fell in love with his handmade book journals. He takes the covers of old books and fills them with acid-free paper that’s perfect for journaling or sketching. Then, he intersperses pages from the original book to add a little personality, which makes it so inspiring to use! The book spine-turned-cuff that I bought from him is another item that I always get comments on!

So now that I’m on this repurposed book craze, I thought I’d share with you a few more of my favorite picks from around the interwebs.

Throwing a party soon? or maybe you have a children’s room to decorate? I love this vintage children’s book bunting from Tin Roof Junkerie.

Did you know that the traditional 1st anniversary gift is paper? One of these folded book pieces by Luciana Frigerio may be the perfect gift!

Decorating a room and wanting to add some instant personality? Might I suggest a color coordinated compendium? Decades of Vintage sells books by the color.

We went over to a friend’s house the other night and died laughing when we saw Paul Revere riding a velociraptor. Get unique art printed on old book pages in Collage-O-Rama’s shop.

bracelet, comic book

Want to don something funkier with your everyday office garb? I’m a big fan of bangles. Especially these comic book bracelets from Graphic Novelties.

Starting to think about Fall decorations? I love these book pumpkins from HiButterfly.

birdhouse, book, repurpose

Finally, I’ve been coveting this Julia Child cookbook birdhouse since I first saw it on Uncommon Goods. (I’d also suggest taking a peek at this one if you’re a fan of Harper Lee.)

Wow! this project is so cool. I am going to try it right away. I love to use old books into new projects. It's like bringing them back to life. I have also found many new and inspiring ideas from this book by Altered Upcycling. Check it out!

I love the pumpkin! I have a Christmas tree made from books, so it would be nice to have a fall-themed book decoration as well!

Just found old books of my grandmothers …the art of conversation…old 50 and sixties graphics …thanks for the ideas!

Why not cut a stack of paper to fit and use glue in place of wire/plastic binding? I don't like the way those curly bindings get stuck to each other.

What a fabulous group of ideas. Of course I always love color-coded books…..but a comic book bracelet… a cookbook bird house….a sculptured book message….FABULOUS.. all just fabulous re-purposing ideas.

Thanks so much for the mention.
