Emily Winters: A Bathroom Renovation Preview

I’m taking on a big project this winter – my first ever bathroom renovation. It’s huge for me, and I’m excited about the challenge!

Check out this little video to learn more about what I’m going to be tackling in the upcoming weeks (and get a little tour in the process).

I’m putting a stake in the ground and vowing to stay within a self-mandated $1,500 budget for the whole job. That will include the new vanity, new mirror, new tub and shower tile, new floor, and new baseboards and trim for the 75-sq. ft. bathroom. Hopefully with a little bit of shopping around and old fashioned DIY know-how, I’ll make it a reality this winter.

Are you with me? Check back often for updates.

Catching the home improvement bug at an early age, Emily Winters is a now a devoted DIYer living in Rochester, NY. The projects she covers on her blog Merrypad range from painting a wall to building a deck, so it’s only natural she landed at DIYNetwork.com. I rennovated a 1/2 bath for around $300. The largest expenditure was for the new vanity, sink, faucet and granite countertop. The rest was reworking old stuff into new stuff, saavy shopping and a lot of DIY on my part!

I renovated both of my bathrooms myself. In my main bathroom, I re-tiled the shower, removed a rusty medicine cabinet and replaced it with a new mirror, updated the vanity lighting, installed a new vent/light fixture in the ceiling, painted the walls, and put in new flooring. In my half bath, I put in a new light fixture, installed a new sink and mirror, painted and put down a new floor. I totally loved doing it all and can proudly say my budget for both bathrooms was under $1000.00! I learned a lot and got a lot of good advice from lots of friends who have also done this kind of thing. Saved me a lot of money and time!

We are in the middle of renovating a bathroom with a $5000 budget and went over already…but not much. And by "we" I mean my husband is doing everything himself!

Yikes! Budget aside, I'm sure you're saving a fortune by taking it on yourself… are you moving plumbing or electrical and going all out?

  9. [...] While everyone else has been frantically gathering the last of their holiday gifts, over here in bathroom renovation land, I’ve been clamoring over shower tile samples, crunching numbers, guessing what may be beneath the bath tub, and ordering floor tiles. If you missed the whole video reveal of my big wintertime undertaking (and first-ever bathroom renovation), check it out here. [...]

Uuggh! I need to renovate my bathroom, too! Not exactly sure how to remove an old porcelain tub by myself, but that's what friends are for, right? LOL I'm rooting for you! I love the fact that you are a young woman with determination and a budget. Your willingness to do the work yourself, in spite what others may think, is commendable. You go girl!!!! I'm 52 and have done nearly all renovation in my house myself. My dad taught and encouraged me to use the tools in his workshop when the High school I attended refused to let me join the woodworking shop class. I've since helped built garages, sets for opera and musical theater as well as tackled home renovations. Let any and all say you can't and just quietly show them you can.

My budget is $1,000……oh, and I'm a young person who works hard for everything! :)

I'll be following along for sure Emily!
