Today, I am so proud to present a special video that highlights the process of gathering entries, both mail-in and online, and randomly drawing the name of the giveaway winner. Thanks goes out to HGTV.com senior editor Liz Gray and DIYNetwork.com visual designer Jason Kisner for creating this online presentation. Enjoy … and please return to this blog on Friday, October 11, 2013, at 9 a.m. ET to read the winner announcement.
While we wait for the winner announcement, I thought I’d share an interesting tidbit about Blog Cabin 2013 and the yard drainage system that keeps the home high and dry.
As you know, Blog Cabin 2013 has stood on the same spot for more than a century. And surprisingly the site has suffered little to no erosion. So as part of an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy, project manager Dylan Eastman was careful to maintain the home’s original roof size. For added assurance, project contractor Ryan Crosser of Andrew Roby Construction built a subterranean drain system under the eaves to collect roof runoff and carry it through 300 feet of buried piping to a natural ditch that can handle the excess water.
Pretty nifty, yes? You may not have the wherewithal to create your own subterranean drain system, but a French drain is a pretty easy feature to install and does wonders to draw water away from structures. For those in need of how-to help, please check out DIYNetwork.com’s own French drain installation and yard drainage system projects. HGTVRemodels.com zeroes in on the topic with a focused feature on basement drainage solutions and natural stormwater management techniques.

This morning, some folks from DIYNetwork.com gathered at a local Knoxville, TN, fulfillment house to randomly draw the name of the Blog Cabin 2013 Giveaway winner. We received a whopping (and record-breaking) 18,649,549 entries this year. Geesh! You really loved our Atlantic, NC, home!
Stay tuned for more details … and keep your phone handy. We may be calling you sometime soon to share the news that a certain set of house keys is yours for the taking.
The muscadine grapes are growing at Blog Cabin 2013 — and harvest season fast approaches! We thought our most die-hard fans would love to see a snapshot of the mini vineyard that’s climbing its way up and around the reclaimed wood pergola. Let’s chat: If you won the home, what would you do with your grape harvest? Make jellies and jams? Produce fine wines? Throw them in the juicer, perhaps? Set up a farm stand in the front yard and sell them by the peck?
Thanks to project manager Dylan Eastman for sending in this great photo! And thanks to our friends at the Made + Remade blog for posting this timely how-to. If you don’t win Blog Cabin 2013, you can grow your own muscadine grapes and enjoy a bountiful harvest. Enjoy!
A big congrats goes out to Alfredia Callies (aka ACDC25) who was randomly selected as the winner of the cornhole game set, designed and autographed by Blog Cabin 2013 show host Chris Grundy. Truly a one-of-a-kind remembrance from this year’s home!
Today, I’d like to draw your attention to a new video series hosted by home remodeling expert Laurie March. Topics include unusual items discovered during home renovations (you never know what could be hiding behind those walls!) and the evolution of residential floor plans. Enjoy!
It’s been an exciting ride, yes? Thank you so much for entering the Blog Cabin 2013 Giveaway. The grand-prize package, worth almost $500,000, includes a beautifully restored cottage located along North Carolina’s stunning Crystal Coast.
Very soon, we will randomly select the winner of the giveaway. The big announcement (the winner’s name and photo and how many times he or she entered the sweepstakes) will be posted on or around October 11, 2013. Then, just a few days later, we plan to unveil the location of our 2014 home. Stay glued to your computer — lots of details are TK in the coming weeks!
Good luck to each and every person who entered.
Congrats goes out to Michael Golden (aka MichaelG60), who has won the framed rendering of the west yard, signed by Matt Blashaw. What a special keepsake from this year’s renovation project!
I wanted to alert you to one of our best (and easiest!) how-to projects, now being promoted on the Made + Remade blog. Please pop over there to take a look at the step-by-step instructions we’ve posted — it only takes one day to create a pebble-filled winding path just like the one that leads from the Blog Cabin 2013 front porch to the grape vine-shaded pergola. Enjoy!
