DIY Network Blog Cabin 2015 Winner Announcement

DIY Network Blog Cabin 2015

Congratulations to Albert Zaranka! He and his wife, Ellen, are the proud winners of the DIY Network® Blog Cabin 2015 GiveawayTM, a grand prize package valued at almost $900,000.

DIY Network Blog Cabin 2015 Winner

Al’s name was randomly drawn from more than 23 million entries. “My first reaction to being told that I had won was tears of joy,” he says. “For how many millions of entries you get, it never occurred to me that I’d be the lucky one.”

The DIY Network enthusiast admits to entering online, looking at every room, and watching every video. “I always try to figure out where we’d put the piano in each house,” says Al. At DIY Network Blog Cabin 2015, he envisions the family piano in the downstairs hallway across from the living room and stairway.

Al, a teacher and pianist, loves the two-story open concept. “I particularly like the living room with the balcony effect and the view,” he explains.

“We can’t wait to see the home in-person,” says Al. Still shocked from his stroke of good fortune, Al looks forward to sharing the prize with his wife.

Check back in November for more pictures of the lucky winner at DIY Network Blog Cabin 2015.

DIY Network Blog Cabin 2015: Fire Safety Features

Greetings community,

As you saw in my last post, Idaho’s a really great place and we took great strides in designing this home to the specific lot as well as for the climate. Much of the West can be described as high desert and with its coniferous trees can be prone to wildfires from lightning strikes and other causes.

Blog Cabin 2015

Knowing this, we designed this year’s house with five key elements that make it wildfire resistant. Although we were not required to meet these for local codes, it just makes smart design sense to work with the environment instead of against it.

The Best of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

Now that you’ve seen all (6) shows, I hope you can see how we brought a little bit of Idaho into DIY Network Blog Cabin 2015. Every year, we attempt to make this home as local and authentic as we can. And you can see those touches through out each one. Whether its time reading about the location or scouting the local antique shops with design coordinator Laurie March, I really try to understand not only the physical location of the house and how that impacts the design but also how the surrounding beauty and culture should effect it as well.

Now being an East coaster, I admit to not knowing much about Idaho. Potatoes right? Well I was way under-informed as to how cool this place really is! Luckily we also had the fine and friendly people of Coeur d’Alene to help as well as some top notch builders at Edwards Smith Construction.

So today I wanted to share my top 5 Favorite things about Idaho….

Remodeling for a Breathtaking Mountain View

If you are lucky enough to have a house with a view of the mountains or a lake, such as DIY Network Blog Cabin 2015, then you’ll want to be sure to maximize that view.

Small windows and puny patios just won’t cut it. Instead, you might want to install large windows, sliding glass doors and outdoor spaces that can accommodate a crowd to take in the view.

Blog Cabin 2015 Back Patio

At DIY Network Blog Cabin 2015, the existing house faces southwest and has a view of Lake Coeur d’Alene. But, according to Dylan Eastman, build and design manager on the project, if possible, the view should be more southernly to get the maximum vista and the most sun in winter to passively solar heat the house. “In our case, it could be worse,” he says. “The view could have been on the northeastern side of the house where it’s darker and colder. The orientation of the existing house was part of our decision during purchase.”
