People’s Choice Round Three: Vote for Kitchen Features

Blog Cabin 2014 People's Choice Vote

It’s time for round three of our People’s Choice vote, and we’re moving to the main level of the home. For the next two weeks, you’ll be selecting features for the kitchen. From the island top material and cabinet colors to the refrigerator and accent features, you’ll have a variety of ways to help design this year’s kitchen.

Keep in mind though, your flooring pick from round one will greatly affect the cabinet choice you pick in this round. In round one, you chose the tiger strand bamboo flooring, so choose the cabinetry color that will best coordinate with that design.

Have fun, and be sure to share your picks with the group.

  1. The flip up seats look like they either used the bamboo as an inlay. That could work OR again…copper.

Trish on February 4, 2014 at 3:21 pm
    • The pictures shown are just examples in general and do not represent the finishes that will be selected.

Ralebird on February 5, 2014 at 12:25 am
  2. I love the look of the copper top island! So different! Also, I'm not a huge fan of butcher block.

I don't like my pots and pans hanging out collecting dust, so I prefer a light fixture of some sort. The upcycle projects are always fun!

I think the cherry will go better with the stripey bamboo floor (boo!), but maybe the floor in the kitchen will be tile or something? Probably not.

Flip top seats are my preference as I'm not sure what I would put in drawers. Also, I think the flip top will give more storage space. The drawers are limited by the opening they can slide through. I always over-stuff my drawers and they get stuck or things fall behind the drawer as it scrapes open. What a pain!

The French door refrigerator is my choice – I've wanted one for a long time. However, it will depend on the space in the kitchen. It would be a pain if the space is narrow creating an awkward situation when opening the bottom compartment.

I chose the double oven because who doesn't want one of these? So many cooking options!

Overall, as with the previous categories, all of the options are nice. I can't wait to see what they do with our selections!

TwoCorgis on February 4, 2014 at 3:27 pm
    • I was loving the double ovens too until I read all the comments on the pros of the convection oven. Hmmmmm.

      Mom2Ceci on February 5, 2014 at 10:32 pm
    • I have a convection oven and I don't use the convection function very often. I think it's because I always envision it sucking in and blowing around the dust from behind the stove. That's probably not how it works, but I can't get that thought out of my mind. LOL!

TwoCorgis on February 5, 2014 at 10:44 pm
    • I love the convection oven and use it often. It is really good at keeping food from having hot spots in the oven and it cooks fast but I'm concerned about the double ovens size so I picked the single oven. More practical. They can always add a convection microwave somewhere.

  3. A BIG "THANK YOU" for letting us take part in all these selections for this Blog Cabin!!!
I love the choices for this kitchen!!! LOVE the copper counter top!!! I also love utilizing the the space under the built in seating. My first choice was for the "flip top" thinking there would be more room for storage.…then I thought about having to remove the pillows and switched my vote to the "pull out" storage!
I just LOVE up-cycling!!! So… LOVE the chandelier!!! I LOVE to repurpose salvaged items!
I'm just full of "LOVE" for this cabin… !!! :D

Imacajunme on February 4, 2014 at 3:54 pm
  4. I think I saw at least one other person who shared this same sentiment, but I have always loved a kitchen that keeps a lighter more open vibe. For that reason, I think that I would have to cast my vote for the maple cabinets. If this is meant for a lakeside cabin, then I think these are the cabinets that will compliment it the best!

Stephen in FL on February 4, 2014 at 4:16 pm
    • I agree Stephen make sure you vote .I live in Florida too and I think it's being light color does help. They are all beautiful cabinets , oh well.Guess we will see. Let's hope we have some more Floridians voting. LOL:D

Sheri McNamara on February 4, 2014 at 6:21 pm
  5. Chandelier is awesome; hanging pots are for real cooks or for decoration; Maple is kickbutt style& offsets the dark floor. Cherry seems outdated & maybe more uppity feel. Coppertop functional for cooking? or for glamour looks! Butcher block for cooks!looks?(If Cherry, copper wins, dark.island award) The drawers look nice in the seating, but no pic of one drawer open for actual space/sizing. Open top stores more. French door frig more space, sidebyside, too narrow. Double stove a plus. Wonder what color the kitchen will be with those neutral colors that won the vote?

cucumberHOH on February 4, 2014 at 4:25 pm
    • You'll not find many hanging pot racks in professional kitchens. Shelving and cabinets are the norm for cleanliness and working efficiency. The hanging pot rack is just a dust and grime collector. :)

Sally on February 4, 2014 at 4:51 pm
    • Every professional restaurant kitchen I've ever been in (and that's a lot) have pot racks and shelves for easy access to the equipment. I've never seen pots held in cabinets. If they get dusty or greasy the pots and even the rack can go in the dishwasher – try doing that with a wood and wired chandelier.

Ralebird on February 5, 2014 at 12:20 am
  6. We don't have the countertop material or color. The same is true for the walls and backsplash. I believe the Butcher Block would go with many more options than copper.

DannyF on February 4, 2014 at 5:09 pm
    • As long as the rest of the kitchen counters are granite, I'm OK with the copper or the butcher block for the island. Truthfully, I didn't care for either island choice. I'm sure in the end the kitchen will look fantastic and who wouldn't want to own this home? :)

      Mom2Ceci on February 5, 2014 at 10:36 pm
  7. KUDOS to the crew working at the BC today. A lot is getting done.

MAOW on February 4, 2014 at 5:32 pm
  8. I just thought I would add my two cents worth. DIYNetwork and Dylan gave us choices. No choice is wrong, it's just a choice. I do not believe Dylan would allow anything harmful to adults or children. Again these are choices in selection for 2014 Blog Cabin. The choices are vote or do not vote. Why are so many people appearing offended. This is all in the name of making the 2014 Blog Cabin. That's okay though, when I win you can come visit or don't come visit. I love you all and hope you all have a wonderful evening.<3<3xDXXXOOO

Sheri McNamara on February 4, 2014 at 5:40 pm
    • You took the words right out of my mouth Sheri! There is no bad choice just preferences, thats what makes this fun! I will come visit or you can visit me, anytime….. ;)

    • You two are welcome to come over any time.

Jay Michajluk on February 4, 2014 at 7:36 pm
    • this is a great post!

minitoni on February 6, 2014 at 1:27 am
    • I think a lot of bloggers are passionate about their choices and beliefs about their choices. And that's OK as long as we all play nice in the sandbox together. LoL

      Mom2Ceci on February 5, 2014 at 10:39 pm
    • That's the key, be nice in the sandbox and play well together. Be nice to others and don't use the thumbs instead of a comment it is not as nice. Play nice and respect others opinions. Yes you are right about this, and don't shout if you can avoid it. and it is avoidable.

minitoni on February 6, 2014 at 1:29 am
    • <3 that sandbox picture! Perfect visual image of all of us gathering at this sweet lakeside cottage.:DB)

SID on February 6, 2014 at 2:08 pm

Clive on February 6, 2014 at 10:10 pm
    • Clive, Sheri and I have some differences in our choices but here are mine and if you vote for mine and I win the BC then I will even let you ride around on the tractor!! So here goes:
      Up cycled chandelier
      French Door fridge

      Cherry cabinets
      Flip top seats

And whatever DIY and Allison add will make my dream kitchen!
Happy voting and voting and voting and voting…………:p <3

      jchristie24 on February 7, 2014 at 2:27 am
    • Thank you and will surely let you know. In Florida , light and bright works. Carports work fine, no real need to close them in. That way trellises can be add to outer open side. My goodness I was going to wait for the next round and of course I ramble instead. I had read someones comment about garage.Oh yeah, a pantry always works so if it doesn't work in kitchen, it might work well in laundry room. Those are a few ideas I have been thinking about. Honestly I am a very easygoing person so I stick to basics. If I think of more ideas let me know what you think. Thanks again Clive, I appreciate you listening.:D

Sheri McNamara on February 8, 2014 at 5:01 pm
    • Ohhhh Sheri! When we have the party at MY house, we will for sure have gallons of Moose Track ice cream! That is my favorite ice cream in the whole wide world! lol See, yes we all do play well in the sandbox and have a lot in common too! So, whomever wants to party at my house will also be able to enjoy either adult beverages or coffee, tea or soda in my private sanctuary up stairs!! Can't wait!!! <3 :p

      jchristie24 on February 6, 2014 at 10:11 pm
    • That sounds wonderful Jill. I didn't know you were having a house built near mine(to be) in Winter Haven. It is a small world! Haha Appears we have similar sense of humor as well. We do have awesome taste. Moose Track is sooo good. I would rather have that than bacon for breakfast. I never thought I could or would say that! Guess it could be dessert after breakfast. Hum… Maybe we should set up our house parties next to each other…Bet we have confused a few people, huh. Happy day and lots of laughs!!!!xD:D<3<3 Remember you are welcome to my new B.C. future plans will be set late August or so. Love and Laughs to all.:)

Sheri McNamara on February 8, 2014 at 5:12 pm
    • Lol Sheri, how about bacon for breakfast and Moose Tracks for dessert after breakfast, I do believe that is what you said!!!! Holy blood pressure!! I am not quite sure what you meant about setting up our parties together, I know there is my name on the mailbox way down by the road! I am planning a long and winding driveway to get me there too. Just have to decide if I want a go-cart, motorcycle, golf cart to skate board to use to get me out to the mailbox to retrieve my daily mail! lol Now Sherri, are you planning on purchasing the home on either side of my BC? That would make much more sense of how you are talking here!! Must be something else that we have in common besides our love for the BC, sense of humor and living in FL! Are you a brunette???????? :p

      jchristie24 on February 8, 2014 at 8:00 pm
    • Your house?! I'm glad you told us early to minimize later disappointment. I had already been imagining myself out on my boat fishing at dawn…..

RLDorf on February 7, 2014 at 9:04 am
    • You could certainly fish around my house amytime RL! While you are out fishing, your wife and I will be sunning on the deck or swimming in the pool! lol! I dont know where you got the thought that this was going to be your house! lol lol lol :p

      jchristie24 on February 8, 2014 at 2:19 am
    • Sheri, I am with you, we could all do with a little less "becoming offended" and a lot more "playing nice in the sandbox" (to quote Mom2Ceci). I, personally, have had a blast talking to others who have more experience with BC, but a few comments have been a little disheartening and personal. There are no bad choices and the DIY team will make all of the them work beautifully together. I, for one, can't wait to see the fruits of ALL of our labors!

      stlmom1 on February 7, 2014 at 2:15 pm
  9. With some lovely paint I somehow believe the copper/cherry and bamboo will work beautifully together…maybe even a light cocoa or tinge of green (seamist) paint….will have to wait and see….i love upcycled light fixtures, but not so sure about wine bottles or anything you might hit your head on….while flipping those pots….copper pots if healthy…

twoTERRIERs on February 4, 2014 at 6:05 pm
  10. Love the new kitchen choices but why not gas stove? I have cooked on both and would choose gas over electric anyday.

sjiowa on February 4, 2014 at 6:21 pm
    • There are probably no gas lines running to the property.

LAUDGIRL on February 4, 2014 at 8:21 pm
    • I think if there was a gas hook up, they would have offered a gas stove. Now watch, there will be a gas fireplace somewhere in the home.

      Mom2Ceci on February 5, 2014 at 10:41 pm
    • They probably would have to have a propane tank but they like to use the electric stoves for some reason. I prefer my gas.
