On Site in Winter Haven: An Early Christmas Present

As you know from last Thursday’s post, project manager Dylan Eastman traveled to Florida last week to check in on our dear home. After crawling through the attic and measuring each space, he came across something that’s going to make site preparations much easier.

Blog Cabin 2014 House Keys

Dylan says:

When we first scouted locations, we knew this special lakeside lot had an existing metal garage on site. However, we weren’t able to get into it at the time. Later, when we were handed over the keys to the new house and lot, I got a little excited. There was one key in particular that cued my interest.

This Quonset-style hut reminded me of the buildings made popular after World War II by the George Fuller Company. These buildings needed to be economical to produce, shipped anywhere and easy to put up. A rake or shovel would have easily made my day. What I didn’t expect is what I found when the garage door slid up.

Yes, that key belonged to something that will come into much use on this beautiful multi-acre lot — our own tractor.

I can already see Grundy‘s big grin as he zooms around our new site.

  1. Merry Christmas to everyone, be safe and be happy. Thank you to Dylan and Kayla for giving us all such a wonderful Christmas Present. As soon as I saw the keys I thought one said Kubota! and a house key and the third key is the Quonset- hut key. Those three keys fit perfectly in my hand (LOL) or on my key ring I use for my car. As soon as I win MY HOME, of course I am speaking of the 2014 Blog Cabin in Winter Haven, Florida I plan a big, but cozy-style after-the-blog-party and every one is invited. We have quite a few of those quonset-huts here in Bradenton. They are scattered around the airport and story has it that they were made here at the early stages of WWII, not sure if it was used for storage or used for housing soldiers. Everyone please be safe throughout the holidays. Love and hugs and kisses to all. XXXOOO

    • Sorry all, I guess I was napping during the above blog. I'm not real sure what that next to last sentence meant :S However, I do believe that Dylan and Kayla along with DIY, Hgtv and Scripps Networks are going to make someone extremely happy!!!xD I know that Chris Grundy is going to have a ball . Who do you think he will be tractor racing with this time? The "crashers" along with Grundy did such amazing work on 2013 BC so I know that they can do it again. Thanks again to Dylan and Kayla for all the new info and for giving it to us. What a treat. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and continue to be safe and happy throughout this Holiday season. XXXOOO <3 Love, peace and happiness to all.

  3. Some of you may recall from one of the early BC threads….the realtor's listing for the property (I can't recall which of our fellow bloggers found and posted it). The listing mentioned the Kubota tractor and storage shed. I'm glad to see that both are in such good condition.

    • From Addy243 about a month back.
"Here's the Zillow description of the property:
Located on Lake Hamilton, this beautiful and tranquil property offers 5 acres with large oak and pine trees. Large barn/shed. Kubota tractor with mower and disc for maintaining the property. There is a shallow well and pump as well as a deep well. The property is wired for underground electric and is fenced on all sides with redwood fence across the front of the property. This is a lovely piece of land to build your dream home on. There's plenty of room for horses, great fishing and skiing on Lake Hamilton, and you can land your sea plane on the lake! Country feeling with easy access to central Florida attractions and 15 minutes from LegoLand." One or two other bloggers posted the same with the address attached and those blogs were deleted by DIY as they said they would do.

  4. Maybe they'll have a boat instead of a car. or both. Vibrant color of a tractor. Wonder what the house color will be?

  5. Nice! Kubotas are great tractors with power. I wonder if we will get to watch Grundy ride this in an episode? Happy holidays.

  6. Grundy is going to a whole new level with this, will give some of the Crashers and Jason Cameron a run for the money with that.

  8. I live on 3+ acres and have been waiting for five years to build a barn and a tractor. And to think that BC2014 comes with both of those already. What FUN!

    • This years Blog Cabin looks to be very interesting. Love that they found a house that needs a new life and are moving it to this beautiful lot. The house looks like it has a lot features for "re-purposing", maybe they can get the Rehab show involved.
Looking forward to the 2014 season….Happy New Year to all.
