Meet the Blog Cabin 2013 Giveaway Winner

Blog Cabin 2013 Giveaway Winner

Mari Cabrera-Hickerson of Culver City, Calif., is the proud winner of the Blog Cabin 2013 Giveaway, a grand-prize package valued at almost $500,000.

Mari’s name was randomly drawn from more than 18 million entries. The Blog Cabin enthusiast, who has entered every year since 2007, admits that entering twice online per day, almost every day, became part of her routine. “That was the first thing I did in the morning with my coffee,” she says, “And then I’d take a look at what was going on at the home and what the crew did that day. I followed every part of the remodeling process.”

Mari, a former UCLA Medical Center administrative specialist, retired in July 2013 to devote her time to her husband, Ken, as well as her children and four grandchildren. Mari also finds fulfillment in travel and hobbies, including hiking, watersports, cooking and yarn arts.

Although Mari is a fan of eclectic interior design, the North Carolina cottage drew her attention for its waterfront location and coastal-chic cottage style. “I love the beach,” says our winner, who was born and raised in Havana, Cuba, before emigrating with her family to California in 1966. “My mom would come home from work and take us to the beach every day when I was a kid. The beach is part of my soul, I guess.”

As one would expect from a die-hard Blog Cabin fan, Mari is quick to list her favorite room in the home (the spa-style master bathroom) and her favorite furnishing (the reclaimed wood dining table). And she’s most excited to see the compass floor medallion, which proved her top pick during the People’s Choice portion of the Blog Cabin 2013 project.

When Mari and her family arrive at Blog Cabin 2013 for their first visit, the water’s edge will certainly prove an irresistible draw. What does Mari plan to do first? “That’s kind of hard to say,” she admits. “I think I am just going to go room by room and check everything out. And sit on that porch in that rocking chair and look out onto that beautiful water scene. That view is just so gorgeous.”

Mari is still shocked about her stroke of good fortune and looks forward to sharing her prize with friends and family. “I just want to say thank you. This is just a wonderful gift that I never thought in my lifetime that I would receive,” she says. “It’s an amazing opportunity to have someplace where my family can go and be together, relax , have fun and just enjoy.”

  1. I've NEVER been able to post on the UO/DH/SH. I am able here, so this is where I post.

    • Hi Trish, I see you have not joined Intense Debate. If you do you can blog on all 4 sites. WELL, at the present time you could only blog here on the BC site. When they get it up and running again you should come and join us over there. The BC bloggers are such wonderful people we would love it if more of you/us were on all the sites and not just the one.

      Eugenia27 on October 31, 2013 at 6:48 pm
    • Thanks for the encouragement.

      I'll check into this.

Tonight, I gave candy to Trick-or-Treaters. There were many clever costumes! How many of you saw the news where the father put glow sticks together and on his two year old. When the child move, it was like seeing a walking stick person. I looked for this costume tonight, no such thing around here. Did anyone try it in your area?

Trish on October 31, 2013 at 10:06 pm
    • What a great idea for a costume. Not only is it cool but the child can be seen by any passing cars.

  2. nighty night all and happy halloween…still too many treats left, my sis recommended making a snickers pie….

hope we are back in the blog in the am…good luck to us all…and a hug as a treat on halloween…

twoTERRIERs on October 31, 2013 at 11:26 pm
    • I like your sister's idea for the pie :)

Macusina on November 1, 2013 at 3:35 am
    • okay will save for thanksgiving and make that marshmellow/meringue chocolate pie for something different along with pumpkin of course

  3. We've had Blog Cabins in Tennessee (2), in New York, in Virginia, in Maine, and another two in North Carolina.

How about Maryland or Pennsylvania? Maybe Georgia?

Or the Bluegrass State of Kentucky? This Lake Cumberland view home needs some thoughtful renovating and updating but it's loaded with great potential. Bring in the DIY crew to work their usual Blog Cabin magic, add a touch more character inside and out, and this could easily be transformed into an irresistible country charmer with plenty of inviting living space and awesome scenic panoramas.

    A possibility for 2015?

But back to Blog Cabin 2014. Isn't November location reveal time? Well, we're there, so let's get on with the show! What a great way that would be to start off the month….

DBCoop on November 1, 2013 at 1:06 am
    • Last summer we saw property in Minnesota that looked like a BC that could get the DIY charm! It's one of our favorite spots.

Trish on November 1, 2013 at 9:21 am
    • DBCoop-

That looks like a really comfortable home, with a terrific view of the lake. It is much too nice for a total remodel, like some of the other homes. In my opinion, it looks like all it needs is fresh paint, in brighter colors, with different wall covering in some rooms, along with new window coverings, if desired. This is the kind of house I would love to fix up, to make it more modern, at not much expense. The smoke residue above the fireplace can be readily cleaned, with the option of installing a gas fireplace in its' place. The kitchen can use a remodel, to more modern, brighter colors. This home is an easy fix, with not too much crashing needed.

Hope everyone has a spectacular day. I took the kids to a huge Halloween party at the local church, with lots of activities, both outside and inside. The kids are stuffed with sugar today…really hyper. That, too, will pass, after the sugar wears out of their system.

Builder on November 1, 2013 at 9:34 am
    • You're right, the Kentucky lakehouse would be a modest fix, not taking full advantage of the DIY crashers amazing talents. Guess we'll just have to keep looking — at least until the next actual Blog Cabin location is revealed.

…along with kids everywhere, I had my share of candies last night, with plenty still left over. Today it's back to a strict "no cheating" one-a-day policy.

DBCoop on November 1, 2013 at 11:48 am
    • This could be beautiful…what a location……

twoterriers on November 1, 2013 at 9:59 am
    • It's funny that you mention Kentucky. Grundy was in Louisville a few days ago, though that may have been for something completely unrelated. No, I'm not stalking him – just his Facebook page. ;-)

TwoCorgis on November 1, 2013 at 10:38 am
    • I have to agree with Builder, this home wouldn't take much to improve. There is nothing for The Yard Crashers to do.
You do find us interesting homes to consider. I look forward to your next find.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 2:38 pm
    • WOW I love that cabin by the lake in Ky. DIY could do a lot for it. I hope they see your post.

      vicki_in_Utah on November 1, 2013 at 2:58 pm
    • or Illinois or Wisconsin lots of lakes and rivers in both states and not too far from their TN headquarters!

Holidaygal on November 2, 2013 at 10:54 am
    • I love that property's location. I think it would be a nice BC remodel.

Macusina on November 3, 2013 at 2:44 am
  4. Log course it's been kiln-ing me wondering where the next blog cabin will be. Unlike a wall, I'm not bearing well the not knowing. I'm rafter curious! Aren't you?
I've been chinking now for awhile we're heading to the mountains, and as much as I love the mountains, this news would surely test my own moisture barrier with tears of happiness, since my cheeks do make the perfect drip edge for tears of joy.
Mary this passionate Blog, even (LOG) Cabin fan is wanting to get a footing on where we are headed next. So please eave all our curiosity and give us all something to beam about by revealing the next Blog Cabin location. I truss you can tell by my post I wood absolutely love to know.
If you want to stump us for awhile with clues, that's fine! Please just get our blog percolating again :p

Mel on November 1, 2013 at 11:09 am
    • Wonderful post Mel. If Mary ignores the majority of the posts, this one is a Must Read for her.

  5. I would imagine the new Blog Cabin announcement is close. How about Northern Michigan?

    Sam_O on November 1, 2013 at 11:33 am
    • Northern Michigan????? Well, I guess DIY can teach us all about the different types of insulation.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 2:41 pm
  6. For those wondering what's going on over at HGTV's Dream Home, Smart Home and Urban Oasis blogs: I'm sure the tech folks are pedaling as fast as they can to clear the problem and hopefully relink the blogs back into the Intense Debate format. (Guess those Halloween gremlins can be spiteful critters!)

In the meantime, it appears that comments can still be posted on those sites although only in the previous "non-ID" format — which most bloggers won't remember from years past.

DBCoop on November 1, 2013 at 12:13 pm
    • Thanks for the update Coop, I Can not wait to have those blogs back. Today I hope . Fingers crossed. Do you think they maybe back online today

StormyWV on November 1, 2013 at 12:21 pm
    • Coop, thanks for the updates on the blog problems. I have not communicated with Intense Debate nor the HGTV tech staff so have nothing to report.

While you say we can continue to post, I am unable to read the posts. There are app. 97 comments reported yet I don't have anywhere near that number appear on my screens. Also, the comments are not appearing sequentially, making it essentially impossible to follow a conversation.

Might check back tomorrow unless I hear from someone. Still excited to see the DH reveal and the UO winner, though!

      ut4evr on November 1, 2013 at 12:33 pm
    • Interesting that you can't read all of the posts ut4evr. I have no idea why. I can see them all on my PC screen although there are no pages. I have to just keep scrolling down the single page in order to read them. AND, there are several posts from October 29 that always seem to remain out of order, with a few more recent posts above them. It must be awfully difficult for the tech folks to resynch the blogs once they've gone down.

Agreed, the older format, without the Intense Debate link, is certainly more difficult to follow.

Working with Intense Debate to relink the HGTV blogs and restore calm and order must be ongoing. Let's hope the consultations are successful. For the time being, there is some confusion in the field of bloggle as the troops look for order in a universe suddenly turned a bit more challenging.

DBCoop on November 1, 2013 at 1:44 pm
    • I do not understand computer programing but am very grateful others do! Hope they can fix this (or these) issues soon so I can get back to all of my virtual world friends.Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile

      ut4evr on November 1, 2013 at 2:13 pm
    • My smart phone always displays the blog the way it is right now. It is hard to follow. I have been replying from my email. The problem there is you can only reply to a reply originally directed at you.
I wonder if Mary will tell us what happened or if they will act like nothing was wrong. I'd be interested to know; (I probably will not understand a word of it)

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 2:49 pm
    • There must be major problems for it to have been down this long. This sure has put a damper on the UO giveaway. Sadly .

StormyWV on November 1, 2013 at 3:27 pm
    • I hope the Blog Cabin bloggers don't mind us taking over their site.I suppose it would be different if Mary had given them something new to talk about.I have always found that the BC bunch are very understanding.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 3:53 pm
    • Hopefully they do not mind. I do miss dreaming. It seems as if even that has crashed. No one is watching out windows or waiting on phone calls. Sad. What do you think.

StormyWV on November 1, 2013 at 4:11 pm
    • I think a lot of the newer bloggers may not know about the BC site seeing how it is not on the HGTV list of blogs.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 4:23 pm
    • poor things, if u didn't tell me where everyone was , I was Done for , SOOoo Frustrating…

COOLSMILEY on November 1, 2013 at 6:15 pm
    • I posted on ??? I think it was the DH site to let the bloggers know where we were but it is so hard to find anything on the blog. Instead of the last post being at the end there is a bunch of posts that are out of order. Not all of the newbees have replied to a reply of mine so I can't tell them all but I think I'll go back through my email and see if I can gather up more bloggers.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 6:36 pm
    • Hi Cool Smiley sure missing BC

Straybird on November 1, 2013 at 6:53 pm
    • I wish Mary would give us a clue where the next BC will be. Do you think they will use the Cabin Cam this year also? That made it so much better when we could watch everything that was happening in real time.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 7:53 pm
    • I still am looking out my window. So far no balloons. Maybe it is for the best, I'm having an interesting hair day. I suppose winning would make up for having my face plastered on the internet for the world to see. Maybe I should go find a hat.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 5:10 pm
    • Lol. I am in my pj's with crazy hair and no make-up. I am afraid I would brake the camera. Not looking out the window. I would gladly be embarrassed by hgtv's winners ambush.

StormyWV on November 1, 2013 at 5:20 pm
    • This morning I did look for my Very OLD mascara, it is probably a good thing I didn't find it. Interesting hair and raccoon eyes would make for fun TV but I might have to take my winnings to change my name and move out of the country.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 5:36 pm
    • Lol. I can picture it now. I just hope the dream is not already over. Hopefully they postponed contacting the winner until the glitch is work out. That way we will have a little time to dream.

StormyWV on November 1, 2013 at 5:42 pm
    • I hope Intense Debate will email us individually when they get it fixed!

COOLSMILEY on November 1, 2013 at 6:07 pm
    • I was thinking the same thing.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 6:29 pm
    • this is becoming epic……thanks for the update…..from my experience building my own websites I definitely understand what a headache it can be…..

twoterriers on November 1, 2013 at 1:37 pm
    • Coop, was it (the blog) truly like it is now over on HGTV sites, back before Intense Debate? How did anyone comment on each others posts?
Other than the fact it is not working …… we have come a long way. (or have taken several steps back)

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 5:46 pm
    • As best as I can remember, Eugenia, the (hopefully temporary) non-ID linked blog is how the old HGTV blog format used to be. I can't guarantee that it was exactly the same because I was only a tiny sprout at the time….

No thumbs up or down, no rep score, and responding to comments was a matter of referencing the comment to which you were replying — which then often involved a real back-and-forth, search and rescue operation. Kind of like the days before cell phones… hard to imagine!

DBCoop on November 1, 2013 at 7:05 pm
    • I know when I first started blogging you didn't have to join ID, I remember trying to remember what page I wrote a question so I could find it again to see if anyone had answered.

I can picture life before cell phones, what is even more interesting, try talking to a teenager and explain what life was like when every child didn't have a smart phone glued to their hand. OR give a kid a rotary dial phone, sit back and laugh, make sure to bring popcorn and a large drink because they will be there a long time.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 7:23 pm
    • I like the visual I got with the tech folks pedaling as fast as they can.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 6:03 pm
  7. We are going to have to have a blogger party when hgtv gets the three blogs up and running. I have defiantly missed them and missed chatting and dreaming with all of you. To those who I am sure are working hard on fixing the problem. We are truly greatful for all your hard work.

StormyWV on November 1, 2013 at 6:03 pm
  8. Maybe we all won the UO and now they're really scrambling!!

COOLSMILEY on November 1, 2013 at 6:09 pm
    • Lol, That would be very confusing.

StormyWV on November 1, 2013 at 6:10 pm
    • We could use it as a time share. lets see ……. 40 million divided by 365 days ….. We each get 3 1/2 minutes a year. LOL :)

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 6:26 pm
    • now here is a good idea…

  10. I cant believe we are NOT going to SEE the UO winner , hope they post it here as a second choice?

COOLSMILEY on November 1, 2013 at 6:13 pm
    • The UO main page is still up and running. It is just the blog that is down. I'm sure (at least I hope) it will be working for us to congratulate the winner.

      Eugenia27 on November 1, 2013 at 6:28 pm
    • according to the written rules when or around when were they going to notify the winner?

twoterriers on November 1, 2013 at 8:39 pm

COOLSMILEY on November 2, 2013 at 11:25 am
    • I still can get all the main pages for the 3 HGTV homes. If I click on anything other than the blog it works just fine.
