A Detail You Will Totally Dig

Blog Cabin 2013 Yard Drainage System

While we wait for the winner announcement, I thought I’d share an interesting tidbit about Blog Cabin 2013 and the yard drainage system that keeps the home high and dry.

As you know, Blog Cabin 2013 has stood on the same spot for more than a century. And surprisingly the site has suffered little to no erosion. So as part of an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy, project manager Dylan Eastman was careful to maintain the home’s original roof size. For added assurance, project contractor Ryan Crosser of Andrew Roby Construction built a subterranean drain system under the eaves to collect roof runoff and carry it through 300 feet of buried piping to a natural ditch that can handle the excess water.

Pretty nifty, yes? You may not have the wherewithal to create your own subterranean drain system, but a French drain is a pretty easy feature to install and does wonders to draw water away from structures. For those in need of how-to help, please check out’s own French drain installation and yard drainage system projects. zeroes in on the topic with a focused feature on basement drainage solutions and natural stormwater management techniques.

  1. My stomach is all full of butterflies waiting to win, I have to keep the power of positive thinking going so the law of attraction comes my way. I've had my house phone forwarded to my cell, please let me be the one.

    • I know your feeling. Good luck. I too would like to win so I can do something special for my grand kids.

    • Same here! And my apartment has been so clean!! Ready for the cameras!! That's one good thing about an exciting contest like this one.

  2. I liked watching it on the cabin cam. French drain.

    540sam on October 1, 2013 at 3:07 pm
    • I built a French Drain for snow melt. It works very well.

    • We L O V E the Camera Cam, don't we Sam??? I remember fussing at all the Workers who was tearing up Our yard when installing the French Drain…But at the time I didn't realize how important it was and didn't know too much as to how it was going to work..But at the end, I should have known Jason and Desperate Landscapes would make it beautiful..Really love the Three acres+ and would add fruit trees and a raised garden for Blueberries on the West side of the Cottage…Someone said there was a Pear tree but haven't spotted it…Maybe when the Guys were "Pruning" they cut the pear tree down???? Sam I don't think there is one thing I can complain about except I can't find the Water Pump…If they put it "in" the Outside Shower, I think they are defeating their purpose…Kids will need to wash off their feet and maybe someone is taking a shower??? I hope We find out where the pump is located before we go on to the next Adventure..That is unless you Win Our Lovely Cottage…I'm sure you will be too busy to follow the
next Blog Cabin!! Good Luck Sam, I can picture you fishing from the end of the Dock early morning til dusk.^_^B)<3

      Jennie/Florida on October 4, 2013 at 12:07 am
    • Right Jennie, we LOVE the cam, so much better than watching a picture. When we couldn't see what was going on inside or after everyone left, we could pan around and see what was going on in the sound, fish jumping, a fisherman working his crab pots, or just watching sunrises and sunsets. It sure made things a lot more interesting. It was such a hit that I can't see how they won't have it for our next Cabin build. I think somewhere Dylan or someone mentioned that there were also some Persimmon trees on the property, perhaps on the west side woodline:). I hope you don't get too much of the storm Jennie I think we are going to get much rain. Too much too late.:x

      540sam on October 4, 2013 at 4:37 am
    • Hi Sam, If Tropical Storm "Karen" stays on her course, we will get about 50% rain chance by Sunday with Isolated T-storms/winds and as she moves northeast, should lower storm/rain chances to 30% by Thursday.. That's about 4 full days of rain ..lots of rain for us…But if she shifts more to the East and gets stronger before landfall, that would be a bigger worry for Us here in Florida..Just have to keep tabs on the weather..Tornado Threats for the Central part of the US…Look out Sid and other Bloggers in that area… Clive needs to be on the watch for Tornadoes in his area by Friday and Saturday and You will start getting your rains by Monday and Tuesday, but doesn't look like a wash out for your area so far..You know how it can turn around, especially with the hot and cold fronts clashing…Dr. Forbes said it could be the biggest outbreak of Tornadoes since the ones in Oklahoma and surrounding areas this past summer, Scary! I'm surprised about the tornado threat this late in the year, but guess it's not unusual??? Is it???
This is October and Fall is my favorite time of the year…I love the wonderful Brisk fresh air and Beautiful Fall leaves and breathtaking Scenery, fresh apple cider and candy apples/w freshly picked apples, apple turnovers and homemade chocolate fudge..Love the smell of burning leaves.. Love the Fall festivals, bobbing for apples and the locals playing their handmade instruments and the town is filled with great music everywhere… Love the Fall Season in the mountains of NC and Tenn. ^_^B)<3 The place I would love to be…Use to be my yearly trip since 1985…We'll see about this year!!!
I Hope Dear Mary announces the Winner sooooon!!!! I think She likes the game she plays with us, seeing us struggle through this time between entering to win and giveaway..She can read our comments and tell we are agonizing and some are really stressing out..It has been a long time since entering to win..Hasn't it??? LOL, Seems So!!! We are ready to hear the Blogger's name!!
I would like to know where the next Journey will take Us and will it have beautiful Scenery and will
it be on the Water??? We are really spoiled now with the Beautiful property and background of this Lovely Cottage on the Beach. How can they top this one Sam??? I'm ready to be introduced, aren't you???

      Jennie/Florida on October 4, 2013 at 10:58 pm
    • Jennie I love fall too. I have to say as a native of NC it was wonderful to have the DIY Network back in our state for another year of Blog Cabin. I Thank You for being a tireless champion regarding the beauty of the NC mountains! Of course I'd love to see the DIY Network back again in NC at some point, staying with that thought, I have to share this well know expression with the the DIY Network, Mary, Laurie and Dylan:

Y'all Come Back Now!! Ya Hear?!!!

Along with Asheville, another really nice place in our mountains is the Land of Waterfalls & Transylvania County.
This link will get your toes tapping to the sounds of the Crooked Pine Band. There's some gorgeous scenery and fun activities going on, not to mention the sharing of a good meal by friends, something us bloggers like to do virtually

Mel on October 5, 2013 at 11:08 am
    • Good news is jennie, it looks like the storm is giving up its wind so maybe this will be just a rain event, but it is moving slow, means more rain. Better than a full blown storm though. Looks like the people in the north and central parts are really catching it though. Stay safe.:)

twoterriers on October 1, 2013 at 3:07 pm
  4. We built a French drain in front of our patio so it wouldn't flood with heavy rains. It's amazing how that works. Landscapers use them a lot. Great security being right near the water.
Waiting to announce the winner? I'll be home later today and be ready for a knock on my door. Just sayin!

  7. What a great idea for this lot. I am thinking of doing one of these at my inland home, a densely packed urban neighborhood which does not allow gutters and does not have a good storm water plan in place.

    Lulubelle13 on October 1, 2013 at 4:05 pm
    • wow they don't allow gutters, that is really strict Lulubelle.

      vicki_in_Utah on October 1, 2013 at 11:43 pm
    • Lulubelle13, I have heard that some subdivisions covenants do not allow gutters due to Curb Appeal. I can probably see there is no need for gutters in the dessert areas of California, NM and AR. But Wow..our subdivisions house's builder did not put in gutters, and fortunately did not put in covenant restrictions against them; so the majority of house now have gutters. Maybe you can get those restrictions changed??
I've heard that some insurance companies charge you more if your house does not have gutters if you live in an area with a lot of rain as the rainfall off the roof saturate the soil by the foundation eventually eating away at the ability of the soil beneath the foundation to carry the weight of the structure above and may cause structural damage from soil movement or cause water intrusion in the house. That happened to a friend of mine here in Fl in their guest bedroom. After a series of significant rain she when to vacuum the guest bedroom thought it was musty turned out water had seeped into the house from the outside and she had to had part of the wall replaced, carpet removed and french drain put in along the side of her house. What a mess and the insurance did not cover this damage.

  8. Love DIY and HGTV!! It helps folks like us to do our at-home-projects on a limited budget and safely achieve expert functional results. The French drain is a great concept and we have used it in our difficult landscape. We have always love the DIY project ideas for storage and tight and functional spaces. We have lived in homes where we had to be very creative. o.0 Oh yes, very anxious to hear the winner's name. Good luck to fellow bloggers and to me.xD

  9. Great insight on drainage. DIY is always inspiring and motivates. I do all my indoor & outdoor painting, gardening, & decorating, but the last 2 years i have had health issues with my feet so it prevents me from doing a lot. I still love all the DIY. Would love to have some HGTV here to do what I am unable.

    Just Dreaming!!!

    • I would love to have HGTV in to help me fix my living room! It is the most awkward room ever. And although I grew up in the furniture industry, it has stymied all of us. It stymies designers too! Never again will I choose a floor plan I have not seen!

    • Mary, thanks for the post about French Drains! I knew instantly, when Roby, Dylan and Team began that this was part of the plan and applauded! Hubby and I live in Chesapeake, SE VA, bordering the Intracoastal Waterway, Virginia Beach, and LOTS of waterways. We have French drains on our property, as soil can get quite saturated and quickly here. A note to the wise, should you decide to put one in, make sure that you haveyour Electric and Natural Gas people mark their lines, any other underground lines too, such as fiber optic, so you wont dig into them. Now, I've been next to my phone all week, pen next to, and a ready smile on my face, knowing you won't surprise this older lady at the door~~WHEW!~~ LOVE THAT FACT! Playing beautiful little Jackie Evancho music an underdog little girl who sings like an angel at age 12 and nearly won "America's Got Talent", but she won the heart of the entire world. Just whenever you're comfortable and ready, give me that ring-a-ding-dingy! I can't wait to have that giant party with all my Bloggie Buddys and all My Dear Inspiring DIY/ HGTV/SCRIPPS and the Local Awesome Teams too! Grundy Bring your Mom! OK! tick tock, tick tock! Laurie You'd better be here too! Loads of love!B);)xD^_^<3<3<3 God Bless One and All! <3 xD Kitty

    • How I see it Kitty is that God's abundance to you overflows to others. It's a way of letting them experience His goodness in the land of the living whether they know Him or not. As for your English, I understood your words. I see my little Snuggly One five days a week, sometimes six if she goes to church with me.

    • Yah, put it in the microwave and get it moving. LOL :)

      Eugenia27 on October 2, 2013 at 5:46 pm

Lessie on October 2, 2013 at 6:21 pm
    • Been there, done that. I actually prayed for patience once. You could probably ask Kitty about that. God is good and answered my prayer. unfortunately I had to live through a year and a half of hell. I most definitely learned patience.
OK, skip the microwave. I can wait.

StormyWV on October 2, 2013 at 2:52 pm
    • Me too. I had hoped Mary would have said something by now but drains are important too.

OK Mary, thanks for the drain info, now can we know who won?

      Eugenia27 on October 2, 2013 at 5:26 pm
    • Uhhhhh…There IS something a bit prophetic, though about a sense of going down the drain? :| =/o.0 Kitty

OK~~I'll try to be POSITIVE See below…

DwnSoDwnEaster on October 2, 2013 at 5:49 pm
    • That is funny.

      Eugenia27 on October 2, 2013 at 5:57 pm
    • You know, a thought very similar to yours came to me—it is as though they are letting us know that the winner already has the keys in their hands and that .the rest of us just need to move on and let this particular dream wash down the drain. Do all French drains lead to Paris? Guess I'll be meeting up with all of you there:):) Just goofing around in the waiting room:) :)

      joyfulj9 on October 2, 2013 at 7:16 pm

Lessie on October 2, 2013 at 5:27 pm
    • Stormy, can't find the comment where you cried because of my remark. I FEEL TERRIBLE! That was never my intent, especially with this beautiful home. Let's enjoy it for as long as we can and move on to the next one when the keys are finally handed to someone. My prayer is that God blesses you in a way that lifts your heart, spirit, and soul in ways unique to you. Enjoy!

Lessie on October 4, 2013 at 10:50 pm
    • I understand that reasoning, but personally I will exit this blog after the winner is announced and properly congratulated.

Lessie on October 2, 2013 at 5:26 pm

We're on to the next Blog Cabin, Friends, Hooray for the Winner~~a tear or more for each of us, and remember, God "keeps our tears in His Bottle," true, it's in the Bible! He cares THAT much about our feelings ~~ and so, after we sob, away we go! Love and commiserating hugs from Kitty<3<3<3 (((HUGS))) <3<3<3

    • Thanks Eugenia! In the midst of planning a shower for my second Grammie blessing.

Lessie on October 2, 2013 at 5:18 pm
    • I'm not all that experienced with babies so I have no idea how that works [ (baby showers) just though I'd add that before you could add your thoughts.] If the baby is due in January isn't the first of October soon for a shower?
I hope you have more than one child because …. #1 grandbaby isn't even a year old yet.

Are we going to completely loose you here on the blog now that your cup runith over.
I know that I couldn't be more happy for you.

      Eugenia27 on October 2, 2013 at 5:35 pm
    • The shower isn't until the middle of December Eugenia. Only beginning to make plans so I can catch all the sales during the holiday season! My oldest is now having a baby. Praying the two children will always have a close relationship.

Lessie on October 2, 2013 at 6:27 pm
    • I'm sure if they hang out with their Grammie they will have that close relationship to each other and with you.

      Eugenia27 on October 2, 2013 at 6:48 pm
    • That's my prayer, Eugenia.

Lessie on October 2, 2013 at 9:12 pm
    • We just have to promise each other to keep blogging after the win. We all want to know how it is after taking possession of the property.
Good luck my fellow bloggers. Dream on!

havanera on October 2, 2013 at 1:20 pm
    • That would be the best. We bloggers have invested so much into the BC, to have the next chapter, posted by the blogger who won, would be wonderful. I hope a blogger did win and that they will tell us every little detail of how it is to live there.

      Eugenia27 on October 2, 2013 at 2:07 pm
    • Now that's the best of both worlds, Eugenia, especially if the blogger blogged as much as possible the first month in the cabin. Then to update us on every holiday and change of season.

Lessie on October 2, 2013 at 5:29 pm
    • That would be perfect.

Are you taking this all in Blogger Winner?

      Eugenia27 on October 2, 2013 at 5:54 pm
    • Sure hope so, Eugenia. What a great way to share a blessing.

Lessie on October 2, 2013 at 6:28 pm
    • Probably shortly after the winner is announced they will close down the BC2013 blog. Good News is that they will be announcing where the BC2014 will be located and open a Blog for the BC2014 soon afterwards.

Holidaygal on October 2, 2013 at 3:32 pm
    • Works for me, Holidaygal.

Lessie on October 2, 2013 at 5:30 pm
    • HolidayGal, they don't close the Blog down! We keep the ball rollin'! Soon, they will tell us where the NEW Blog Cabin will be and we go to town~~quite literally! We check out location, the real estate info, Google Maps, history of the area, we really get into it. If we're lucky, someone blogging is from that area, so we instantly start learning all about it: customs, food specialties, any linguistic customs which are native to the area. We almost are experts, by the time DIY starts their thing. We will quickly know who is doing the local Build. I'm hoping Dylan's back on this one~~and regularly. DIY found a treasure, when they found Dylan Eastman in Virginia at BC 2011!!! He is so multi-talented! There is really no time to shut the blog down! We Bloggies will have "Our Work " cut out for us, right off. Stay tuned EveryBloggie!!! And I'm so sorry for all of us who didn't win the NC Wonder! :( Tomorrow~~Next Year~~Keep On! Good Luck! :D <3 Kitty

      Eugenia27 on October 2, 2013 at 7:23 pm
    • They never closed blogs in the past after a win. People can continue bloging through to the next cabin, no breaks. :) That's how some of us have kept in touch for several years of Blog cabins. xD
