Blog Cabin 2013 Awarded Hurricane Bronze Certification

Blog Cabin 2013 Fortified Home Hurricane Bronze Certification

Big news from the building industry: Blog Cabin 2013 has received the FORTIFIED Home™ Hurricane Bronze Certification from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS).

IBHS’s Hurricane Standard helps homeowners in coastal areas strengthen their houses against these powerful storms. Incorporating the FORTIFIED Standard when repairing, rebuilding or renovating a single-family home ensures the structure’s resilience and durability.

Blog Cabin 2013 achieved this stellar rating by adhering to certain building requirements. The full list of requirements is outlined on pages 3 through 5 of this disaster safety document.

We’d like to thank sponsors and supporters who contributed building materials that helped us reach this goal. And we are thrilled to be able to present the winner of the Blog Cabin 2013 Giveaway with such a solid, storm-impenetrable — not to mention beautiful — home.

Please visit the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety web site for more details on this coastal home building program.

  4. Having lived through every hurricane that crossed Core Sound which this house fronts since 1964, this is good news indeed. The tide is my concern. Does anyone recall the height of the foundation?

coresounder on August 30, 2013 at 10:07 pm
    • Just found it, 8 feet above Sea Level. I have seen a 10 foot rise just once….during Floyd…bad time.

coresounder on August 30, 2013 at 10:11 pm
    • Structure has been raised to 8 1/2ft above MHT. Previous high flood level reported was at or about first floor window sills of old structure. As long as it's not up in a creek or bay it should be fine.

  5. I was looking at some of the obstacles Project Manager Dylan Eastman and Project Contractor Ryan Crosser had as they studied the Plans for the Blog Cabin. They decided in making the cabin safe for hurricane weather they would have to make it safe for up to 130 mile-an-hour winds in reinforcing everything right down to the foundation-wow! Completely re-framing the whole cabin because the wood framing was too small from the original build (in keeping with the codes we have now). Then with the extensive termite damage being another reason for replacing so much wood product. By the way how do you get rid of termites- not just the wood? Contractor Robbie Davis (from Andrew Roby Construction) was a shining star through all of this project!
The media room is so fantastic with all of the uses it offers! Then access to the balcony from that room is genius. Beautiful! I love the stairway in the house with it not taking up too much room and the "see-through" effect, which gives you the vision of the rest of the house a you're coming down the stairs. Just wanted to acknowledge Dylan, Ryan and Robbie for ALL that they did!!!

  7. Such a pleasure In this day and age
to see the contractors truly engage
Their hard work deserves much Praise!

    • Very good smiley!!!! You are so talented. This house is so secure looking, hurricane protection, so important in that location. Of course, the best protection is to leave if you are told to evacuate!!! :)

    • Exactly….it's not worth it……it's only stuff. We can't build another "you". If it is at all possible get out of harms way. Storms do come and they can do damage, stay out of their way…'s alot healthier:)
