Blog Cabin 2013 Awarded Hurricane Bronze Certification

Blog Cabin 2013 Fortified Home Hurricane Bronze Certification

Big news from the building industry: Blog Cabin 2013 has received the FORTIFIED Home™ Hurricane Bronze Certification from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS).

IBHS’s Hurricane Standard helps homeowners in coastal areas strengthen their houses against these powerful storms. Incorporating the FORTIFIED Standard when repairing, rebuilding or renovating a single-family home ensures the structure’s resilience and durability.

Blog Cabin 2013 achieved this stellar rating by adhering to certain building requirements. The full list of requirements is outlined on pages 3 through 5 of this disaster safety document.

We’d like to thank sponsors and supporters who contributed building materials that helped us reach this goal. And we are thrilled to be able to present the winner of the Blog Cabin 2013 Giveaway with such a solid, storm-impenetrable — not to mention beautiful — home.

Please visit the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety web site for more details on this coastal home building program.

  2. Congratulations for a job well done.and for receiving the Hurricane Bronze Certification. That is a great award to achieve for All involved in the rebuild of the old Cottage/Blog Cabin…Wonderful Merit Award of excellence!! I'm so proud to be a witness to the rebuild and as a female blogger, I watched daily from the start and could see they structured this Cottage to be strong and could tell the builders and crew were very professional in their craft….
I live in Florida and I have been through many Hurricanes, so I was interested as to how they were going to add strength to the build, to make it Hurricane Safe..Raising it did eased my worry and when I saw the braces, tie downs and other strength providers, I felt the Cottage will surely last another 100 years.
I feel they did everything to the Cottage they could to protect it from the high winds and floods. I could see the products they used were top quality products. The Crew took so much care and was so precise..Mr Andrew Roby and his Crew are top notch and they took care when applying everything from siding to the post on the porches, to the windows, the roof , deck, porch ceiling and the inside moisture proof insulation ..Great windows to withstand strong winds…I think they thought of everything to protect this Cottage.
We weren't privy to the inside while work was underway but the photos were very impressive.
I'm so glad the Bloggers were allowed to witness the day to day upgrades as the old Cottage turned into a Beautiful and strong Seaside Cottage on the shores of Atlantic NC…Thank you Mr. Eastman, Mary and Diy for letting us Bloggers be a part of this Great Adventure…^_^:p:)B):D
I'm sure the Winner will be grateful for the award on their Cottage, it should help with the Homeowner's Insurance and ease their minds during Hurricane season and Nor'Easter's!! :p:)^_^<3

  9. I'm not surprised. The cool thing about winning any of these homes is knowing they are well-built, not only because DIY, HGTV, and FrontDoor has high standards but because the contractors get to showcase their work. I've lived on the SC coast for many years, and I've seen the damage hurricanes leave behind. We've ALL seen what tornadoes can do, as in Moore, Oklahoma. I can't imagine returning home after a tornado or hurricane and finding my home completely destroyed. So congratulations DIY for earning this Fortified Bronze Certificate. I know the winner will rest easier knowing every precaution was taken to ensure the cabin's durability.

  10. I'm sort of getting off the subject here, sorry, but I have two questions if anyone can help me: I thought a blogger mentioned a "pet yard"??? As in a separate area for pets? She had four or five dachshunds. Also, how would I get info on the hanging lanterns beside the outdoor eating area? Thanks!

charhug on August 29, 2013 at 1:07 pm
    • The doggie yard is invisible because it is an electronic fence where a shock collar is worn by the pets. I am not too crazy about the shock collars, but I would rather than that they get hit on the highway, downed in the sound, or someone steals them from if they stray. Also with the electric fence, pets are restricted to the property without spoiling the fantastic views.

    • Millie, the only time the pet would be shocked is if it were actually on top of the perimeter of the radio wave boundary' when they get close it's almost like a vibration or tingling on their neck to alert them. They learn pretty quickly when the training flags are put up. As you said better than losing you pet.:)
