Blog Cabin 2013 Awarded Hurricane Bronze Certification

Blog Cabin 2013 Fortified Home Hurricane Bronze Certification

Big news from the building industry: Blog Cabin 2013 has received the FORTIFIED Home™ Hurricane Bronze Certification from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS).

IBHS’s Hurricane Standard helps homeowners in coastal areas strengthen their houses against these powerful storms. Incorporating the FORTIFIED Standard when repairing, rebuilding or renovating a single-family home ensures the structure’s resilience and durability.

Blog Cabin 2013 achieved this stellar rating by adhering to certain building requirements. The full list of requirements is outlined on pages 3 through 5 of this disaster safety document.

We’d like to thank sponsors and supporters who contributed building materials that helped us reach this goal. And we are thrilled to be able to present the winner of the Blog Cabin 2013 Giveaway with such a solid, storm-impenetrable — not to mention beautiful — home.

Please visit the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety web site for more details on this coastal home building program.

  1. Thanks Matt Blashaw, for the shade structure that will withstand strong winds, also the steel brackets to keep all the wood together and the beautiful old heart pine making this area safe, durable and beautiful. Just imagine blogger friends, the glowing colored glass candle lanterns hanging from that old lovely pecan tree swaying with the sea breezes and we are able to relax and enjoy our * dreams can come true home .*

  2. Does anyone know how to figure out where some of the accessories pieces are from? I tried to look through the site, found loads of information about appliances and such. But I am trying to chase down things like the whale shower curtain in the guest bathroom, and the whale carvings in the sunroom.

Whomever wins this home, and I hope it is me or someone else who loves it just as much, please let's have an open house so that we can see the inside. If it becomes mine, I promise, we will have a big open house and oyster roast on the grounds!

    • I don't knnow if you've done this already but you could try contacting the Blog Cabin interior designers, Guthrie Interiors, directly at http://www.guthrieinteriors.com
4050 Arendell St, Morehead City, NC 28557 Tel: (252) 648-8329

Or, through the HGTV remodels site, post the question to Laurie Marsh, House Counsellor. I'm sure between those two people you should get the information you're seeking. :)

    • Thanks, it's really cute. I am thinking about a redo of my guest bathroom.

    • Huh, someone didn't like the fact that I like the shower curtain in the BC guestbathroom. Alrighty then. :*

    • Lulu, please don't let dings worry you. It may be just that someone hit the wrong thumb by accident. I've known bloggers to apologize after doing that by mistake using one of those tiny keyboards on a cell phone. It's rare to get really negative folks here on the BC blog. When we do they usually don't get much attention so tend not to stay long.:D

    • Hi Holiday, lulubelle13 here. I had to delete my account last night as someone was following me around and dinging all of my posts. I got the willies, as this is how my recently departed stalker of 3 years started out. So it touched a nerve. So I wiped the account which now appears as deleted and cannot be used, and don't plan to blog much unless i see a post directed at me like this one. I'm fine! Love the towels. Best of luck holiday!

    • Hi lulubelle13, Glad to hear You are OK. I was worried about any health issues you might be having when I saw your account was deleted…So sorry to hear about you getting stalker. Creepy and weird ( to say the least) to have a pathological idiot following you around.

Will miss your sage advice/knowledge on the Crystal Coast area. Wow the true countdown has begun. Winner to be announced 1 month from today. May One of Us be the Winner of the BC!! signing off, holidaygal

    • I figured you were, hence my reply here as a guest. Feel free to email me at bmcf13@gmail.com. It is an account created for public posting and mail ordering and the like. I'll reply back with my personal email. Please be sure that Straybird and Smiley see this as well. Best of luck to all of you bloggers. And sorry that I got creeped out by my follower/dinger/fan/cyberstalker. But having seen this stuff escalate once, I'm not sticking around to see it happen again.

You can tell I rarely use that one. Admins, could you please modify the email address in the two posts above? Thank You. Now i know why most people register. The functionality as a guest poster is pretty limited.

  4. DEAR ARROW SHED, Should I win, I want your Redneck Windsor Castle Model shed please for my goat/lawn mower. I understand it may take some time to build. And yes, lavish for a goat. Yet I am sure a case of beer delivered by Josh & Grundy can settle all issues.

    Thanks, Erinn

  5. To everyone who is wondering where the water pump ended up at this beautiful place: On the BLOG
CABIN Screen: go to MAIN, then the VIDEOS, then BLOG CABIN 2013: WATER PUMP, and you"ll find out! You'll hear Laurie and Dylan say where!

Peggy on September 5, 2013 at 12:50 am
    • :) That's an old video made before the yard was crashed. The pump's not where they say it will be, hence the questions. Keep looking.;)

    • Thanks for the heads up.

  6. "I noted one blogger was concerned about termites. I have all the confidence in the world that DIY took care of the problem. I mean, how would it look if, when the winner arrived–with all the cameras–and half the porch was just sawdust?" Yes, I was the one just wondering how to get rid of termites. I wasn't accusing anyone of anything. I was just wondering if anyone knew is all. I thought these were the type of things we were talking about besides every blog just saying "I love the Blog Cabin". Was I wrong?

    • At the beginning of reconstruction the ground at the foundation and within is treated, and a treatment permit is issued.

  7. Watched the video again this morning and now I want to do a drive by. The frame photo of the home progress will look good hanging in the Mud room as you enter the home. When you award this cottage to me, I will hang it!!!!

  8. Great house, fantastic location. I looked over Past Cabins and was wondering whether they ever venture west of the Mississippi or further south than NC? There's a lot of beautiful places beyond those areas that need the exposure and $$$ it brings locally.?

AviDIYer on September 5, 2013 at 8:38 am
    • Scripps Network, the parent company for DIY Network, is headquartered in Knoxville, TN. They have tended to stay within their 'comfort zone' , i.e. TN, NC WV & VA except for last year when they made it up to Maine. The show is about building or renovating a vacation / 2nd home property. The E coast from NYC to Charlotte to the Mississippi holds over 50% of the total US population so maybe they stay in that region to give the greatest opportunity for a winner to keep it or find a potential buyer more easily. :)

  9. does anyone remember how long it took to find out who won the smarthome 2013 after the contest closed?

    2TERRIERGILDEDPARROT on September 5, 2013 at 10:08 am
  10. seems to me if there isn't going to be a pump, then that would have been a gr8 blogger giveaway item!!

COOLSMILEY on September 5, 2013 at 11:15 am
    • I blogged this before, sorry for repeating but it was way back. I'm wondering whether the pump was among the items requested to be returned to the former owners as agreed with DIY. Another possibility is that something happened to it while it was being adapted for a regular faucet. Old cast iron is very brittle and maybe it was cracked or something like that. The third and I hope correct option is that it's now there somewher but wasn't available at the time they shot the videos and stills for the tour. :)

Sally on September 5, 2013 at 1:26 pm
    • Hmmm, V E R Y I N T E R E S T I N G!

    • Would have been nice anywhere…

      MichaelG60 on September 5, 2013 at 11:35 pm
    • IF the pump is gone, for whatever reason..the winner can go on ebay and get one under the postings: Old hand pump Deming Co Ohio.
