Hi all,

I am pleased to announce that Sandra Drayer (screen name SID) is the winner of our first Blog Cabin 2013 Gimme Gimme Giveaway. She is the proud new owner of our reclaimed wood coaster set. Don’t forget to stop by on August 9, when we launch our next giveaway, the complete bedding set used in the master bedroom.

Today’s cinemagraph, courtesy of visual designer Jason Kisner, highlights the home’s amazing outdoor spaces. Enjoy!

    • Good Luck!!!!

And to you all (The DIY team), It “WOW“s me to see the before and after pics of this decrepit, run down cabin being turned into a modern, yet cozy, home. How you managed to save the “southern charm“ and of the home is beyond me– It is magnificent!!! Great Job!!!

  4. Congratulations Sandra!
I am Happy this "Piece of the Dream" was won by someone who can appreciate it.

    Mary,
Jason Kisner, like all in this year's Blog Cabin team, did a wonderful job!
His current images are very evocative of the outdoor pleasures of this region.

  6. Congratulations Sandra! Does anyone know how much out of pocket expenses there will be with this home? I don't see any cash or a vehicle for this cabin, correct?

    di55 on July 30, 2013 at 9:00 pm
    • No cash or vehicle, nor is there a cash option. If you win the cabin that is what you get….. the cabin.
You will have to cover the income and property taxes. I am not sure of the $$$$$ for the taxes.

      Eugenia27 on July 31, 2013 at 1:18 pm
    • Supposedly 36%:$

coolsmiley on July 31, 2013 at 2:51 pm
    • Where did you get that information from?

      Tom&Penny on July 31, 2013 at 3:55 pm
    • I believe I read it earlier on in the blog , no one can say for sure because no one knows your income however the point is made that the value of home is $462,740 so even if you earned nothing else all year whatever federal requirements are for that amount would be due!

coolsmiley on July 31, 2013 at 4:33 pm
    • Clive says, $141,000 for single and $131,000 jointly plus your state tax plus closing cost. etc. If there were a vehicle or cash involved you would pay taxes on that also.

      540sam on July 31, 2013 at 4:12 pm
    • Do we know if Clive is an accountant or is that none of our collective bloggie business?

coolsmiley on July 31, 2013 at 4:35 pm
    • No I'm not an accountant. Not even close. ;) We employ one to do our taxes which, after my mistake earlier, seems a good thing to do. xD

Clive on July 31, 2013 at 5:17 pm
    • Well, I am single and those costs really take me back. I would go bankrupt so maybe I need to take myself out of the game. On the other hand how can they tax if you get the house for free, won't they have to wait until the following year and then reassess for value? That's kinda what's done when you buy a house that hasn't been sold in a really long time. Still I'd love for someone to give us the real truth. How about you Mary?

      di55 on July 31, 2013 at 10:18 pm
    • So the “winner” has to come up with ~$141K in Taxes, plus closing costs? What happens if the person chosen can’t meet that financial obligation? Do they keep drawing names?

      TWJ65 on August 7, 2013 at 10:26 am
    • Of course they don't keep drawing unless the winner declines the prize (they have 5 days to decide). The tax obligation is the same whatever you win – Powerball, lotto, DIY Blog Cabin etc. Income tax is owed. All these houses are taken by the winner then most are sold quickly. The winner pays income tax on the proceeds of the sale if they do it reasonably quickly. As so many bloggers have said, get sound, independent financial advice. If you have to sell to cover the taxes it's not so bad. You will still come out with well over $1/4 million cash profit.:):DxD
