On the Eve of the Virtual Home Tour

Happy Friday, folks!

We launch the virtual home tour on Tuesday at 9 a.m. Excited? I think you will be stunned by the images and exclusive video we’ve captured.

In the meantime, I thought you’d enjoy a special treat: a second cinemagraph from visual designer Jason Kisner. Yes, the home has an outdoor shower — your vote! — and it’s clad in the home’s original shingles! How cool is that?

Also, I have some exciting news to share. We will be doing giveaways in this blog throughout the run of the tour and sweeps. The Blog Cabin 2013 Gimme Gimme Giveaway starts next Friday, July 19. First product up for grabs? Coasters handcrafted by project manager Dylan Eastman from the home’s original corner posts! Check the Made+Remade blog for the exclusive how-to (just in case you don’t win them). A rendering of the side yard (giveaway August 23), signed by Yard Crashers host Matt Blashaw, and a cornhole set (giveaway September 9), designed by Blog Cabin show host Chris Grundy, will also be given away.

Keep checking this blog for more details, rules and guidelines. Cheers!

  1. Wow ! Mary, Thanks for the "action" picture. As others said about the blue towel gently blowing in the breeze, I could almost feel the breeze ! I thought the lanterns were great and now you gave us more with the great shower using the "old" siding. Not enough that you are doing this Blog Cabin, but doing such a great job of finding unique ways to incorporate many of the orininal cabin things. I know a lot has already been said, but I was not able to blog yesterday, and had to add my thoughts. I am so excited about seeing the cabin. Thanks again to all the staff and entire crew. ;) <3 ;) <3 my best to all Nan

  2. Mary,

Jason Kisner's fantastic second cinemagraph truly captures the "feel" of this year's Blog Cabin. The Blue towel and the shadows dancing upon the bench and the shower – clad in the original home's shingles – project the feelings of a sea breeze and the old and new of being in this particular cottage by the sea! Well done, Mr. Kisner!

Like all others, I look forward to the chance to win a unique item associated with this Blog Cabin: and, viewing the upcoming virtual tour!

Job well done by all involved in this year's Blog Cabin.

Best Wishes to all Commenters for the 2013 Gimme Gimme Giveaway.

  3. Just a side note this morning- Did anyone else read about the gentleman, 80 years old, who is walking across America, starting in North Carolina? He even mentioned the sound and a photo of the Sound area in one of his earlier blogs. Right now, he has just entered North Dakota, on his final destination of Washington. It is wonderful, and informative reading. What a coincidence that he started in North Carolina. It is listed under, "seniors walking across America". Good luck, and happy reading.

    • WOW and hes 80! Maybe theres hope for me yet! What an awesome story!<3

coolsmiley on July 16, 2013 at 8:14 pm
    • Yes, Bruce just turned 80 on June 30th. Someone along the route heard about him, and even surprised him with a birthday cake. You can follow his journey, by typing : seniorswalkingacrossamerica . In one of his early blogs, he was even in New Bern, North Carolina, not too far from Blog Cabin 2013. It is a small world, isn't it? It is a very interesting story, with updates every day, and tons of very nice photos. You will thoroughly enjoy it. :)

  4. Well, this morning we can all say "day after tomorrow" we will get to see the blog cabin in its
finished state. How exciting! Thanks to the whole crew we will have a chance to win a beautiful
shorefront retreat starting at the end of the month. Looking forward to that first real morning
    coffee on the porch.

    • Good Morning Gail, so nice to see your comments…I have missed you and wondered what happened to you…We have been on this long journey and it is finally coming to an end…One lucky person will win this beautiful place^_^…If you won, would you be moving to Atlantic, NC??? Maine is so beautiful!! That would be a big decision to make..I know We all wanted to sit on that front porch in a wicker swing and enjoy Our morning Coffee and enjoy that beautiful view.
I think back and smile when remembering a lot of things such as when they were taking down the Cottage and raising it again…. Remember how We were so worried about those nice shells by the pine tree. We wanted the crew to pick them up and save them for the New owner…We worried about the front screened door being opened for days and the rain was getting inside of our cottage…and were all upset when they put all that nice antique furniture outside in the weather o.0<3
Gail, what a treat it was to enjoy the beautiful Sunrises and Sunsets and to watch the daily activity from the Camera Cam and be able to share my thoughts with our blogging friends..It's been so much fun and my favorite Blog Cabin so far!! <3<3B)

      Jennie/Florida on July 14, 2013 at 10:21 am
    • We've had great memories with this cottage haven't we though? Very well said Jennie!:DB)<3

SID on July 14, 2013 at 10:35 am
    • Jennie I remember not being a fan of the red brick foundation for a beach home, and really wanted to see white, or gray brick used instead. With the large wraparound porch and landscaping the red brick is barely visible, or it has grown on me, 'cause now I find the red brick foundation fine.
This years BC has the best yard IMO ever!! I didn't think DIY could top last years backyard, but to me, they did. Now I wonder how in the world will they ever top this years yard?? Two wonderful pergolas, an outside shower, gorgeous beachy walkways and a great dock is gonna be hard to beat :)

Mel on July 14, 2013 at 11:58 am
    • Hi Mel, I felt the same way about the red brick foundation and verbalized it when they were laying the brick, I was really disappointed at the time, but it turned out OK since the nice wide porch hides it..I was thinking at that time, the bricks could have been whitewashed if it took away from the beachy look but now I'm so glad it's not that noticeable…
I love everything about the yard except I only wish they had replaced the Muscadine vine Arbor with new post and kept it simple like it was and left the vines where they were and not planted the grapevines around the Pergola..I think that might be a problem when grapes are in season because the birds will invade the pergola and I have a feeling the owner will be cleaning that area often and won't be a good place to serve food or leave cushions with the bird droppings…Not very appetizing o.0^_^B)
I Love the outdoor shower, bench and the paver area, but did you notice that little area at the end of the bench on the Cottage wall …It looks like some kind of opening or am I seeing things???o.0o.0… Can't wait to see Everything!!!^_^B)<3

  5. I am excited for this new thread, getting "antsy", can't wait for everything to start!!

    No rain–finally!!

    Have a wonderful day!!! :)

TishaStanley on July 14, 2013 at 9:15 am
    • Tisha, we are finally about to GET some rain, they say. At least the temp dropped 30' from yesterday, it's 70' now, overcast, humidity in the air (as opposed to 20% yesterday), and misting. Maybe we are all getting a little break for a change.

Wind Chime Girl on July 14, 2013 at 8:09 pm
    • I'm so glad that you're finally getting rain!! We're getting ready to have some 90+ days…I'll take it…Still praying that everything goes well for you!!

TishaStanley on July 15, 2013 at 6:19 am
    • Hi, Tisha, we have ~ 2" in the gauge. We were forecasted to get >5", but what do they know. In 2010 during a horrible drought, we got 7" in August, no one saw that coming, all that did was wash the top soil away, came down so hard & fast nothing soaked in; but this has been a good slow, soaking rain. I hope you can dry out and I hope we get more rain.
Virtual Tour tomorrow! I bet we bog the blog cabin site completely down!

Wind Chime Girl on July 15, 2013 at 6:41 pm
    • Hi, WCG, I'm glad that you've been getting a good soaking rain!! I'm starting to dry out, which is good. I'm up early on this Virtual Tour day–headache–but I am waiting…. I'm so excited! You may be right, we're gonna bog down this site….but it will be so worth it!!
      Have a wonderful day!!

TishaStanley on July 16, 2013 at 6:48 am
    • We got a little rain on Saturday, it cleared out the smoke in the air. Of course that was the day of the big Renaissance Fair in town, but no one complained.

      vicki_in_Utah on July 15, 2013 at 8:45 am
    • Hey, Vicki, I'm glad you got a little more rain. I'll bet no one complained! I was hoping you weren't having to breathe all that smoke, it's so bad for everyone.
Yesterday afternoon when the misting started, even our two kitties were out playing in it & they've been back out in it today. What does that tell you? We got actual rain in the late evening/nighttime adding up to just shy of 2", then more off & on misting/sprinkling today. We had a record low-high temp. today of 71'. That is unheard of in these parts (previous record for the DFW area was 79' in 1900). What a blessing this has been for everyone and everything around here.
Can't wait for the V.T. tomorrow!

    • Hi, my basement is starting to dry out now. The rain has finally stopped–WCG is getting some, thankfully, before wildfires–or maybe helping to put them out?–I'm hoping I can get down there and get my laundry done now…

    • Thanks, GidgetandLucy! It was interesting, especially the Google Maps one, with actual pictures of the place in process! I don't trust Zillow's facts at all! Even if they did have updated info on the beautiful Blog Cabin, they are NOT good at market comparables and updates. Take them with a grain of salt, so far as price accuracy. Map correctness, yes, they are good at that. They do not search and properly use market neighborhood comparables and can get very significantly off-based, so be aware. It was so helpful for you to update us with the links though! :D xD^_^<3 Kitty
