Meet the Winner of Blog Cabin 2012

Blog Cabin 2012 Giveaway Winner Josephine TurnerClockwise from top:Josephine and David Turner, a Turner family vacation, Blog Cabin 2012.

Josephine Turner is the proud winner of the Blog Cabin 2012 Giveaway. Her winning entry was received via HGTVRemodels.com on September 26, 2012.

This proud Butler, Ky., native and her husband, David, have been married 49 years and are the proud parents of four children. Ten adorable grandchildren range in age from 2 to 25. “They are truly the joy of my life,” she says.

Josephine, who has participated in the Blog Cabin Giveaway for the past four years, entered the 2012 sweepstakes twice a day, almost every day, throughout the giveaway entry period. She was attracted not only by the home’s location (“Maine is a lot like Kentucky. It’s a beautiful, wooded hilly area,” she says), but the home’s rustic-chic interior design. Her favorite room? The kitchen.

“My head was still spinning,” says Josephine, when recalling the moments immediately following the phone call from DIY Network. “It sounded almost too good to be true. It’s so much to wrap my head around, that I actually won this wonderful gift.”

Josephine has received nothing but support and congrats from her closest friends and family. “They’ve said, ‘It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.’ And to me, that’s a wonderful compliment.”

Her advice for other Blog Cabin enthusiasts? “Keep entering, keep entering,” she says. “The day you skip is the day you might have won.”

  1. Dear Turner Family,
If you decide to sell your home would you be kind enough to post your listing agent? I fell in love with this home at first sight and would be most interested in making an offer. Wishing you a Healthy & Happy New Year!

    • Dear Josephine, I'm sure that winning and then having to sell is a big and bittersweet exercise. But I wanted to write something about the character of one potential buyer, in the event such things may mean something in your decision. There could be no better. kinder insightful and creative, gentleman, to be vying for this house! Kenneth Day, a Mainer, working in Boston, but who really wants to return to his roots and family, especially after he lost his father last year. I think it would be such a blessing to have him be the caregiver for this lovely place, which somehow calls to him. I believe he will improve and conserve the land in a positive manner, being both horticulturally- inclined and leaning towards off the grid conservation and safety for animals in the wild. A good fit, I think if you could work out something within reasonably mutual and acceptable and perhaps, creative ways, which can meet both your immediate needs, well I would be very relieved on your account, Kenneth's and all of us who watched this old home rise up from mothballs with DIY's Blog Cabin Show.. I live in Virginia, but My historic family root lie in Maine way back to the 16th century. My husband and I go to New Harbor, MAINE, annually. I have children his age and we became friendly and I feel impressed by Ken's integrity and consistency. What might be needed is a creative manner to execute the tax, mortgage and winnings particulars. I do hope that you have read this in the utmost positive vein within which it has been written–and unbeknownst to Ken so as not to embarrass him. I want so for him to be able to purchase the BC which you are selling. It is his dream home! :) I have not told him I'm writing to you and an not sure that I shall. God bless You and yours abundantly, Josephine, and may all your hopes and dreams come true!

    • Hi Ken! Called yesterday, but I know it was during your work hours. Sorry I missed you! It occurred to me that Josephine may be following up on some further idea/options which were posted here and or, suggested to her back in KY, since DIY transferred ownership over to her this year. It was nice of DIY to wait till 2013, rather than push it in 2012, because that wouldn't have given the Winner any time at all to breathe, much less to examine any options. I know it's pins and needles time for you though… Hang in there. With you all the way, my Friend! God's in control and I know Josephine really wishes she could keep BC, but even after initial taxes, it will be high maintenance, so she has to look at all that too. Loveya!!! :) Kitty

    • Hi Kitty,
I'm sorry I missed your call. Thank you for your kind and considerate message. I wish there was a way Josephine could keep the house. I know if I won and had to sell it I would be heart broken. My thoughts and prayers are with her. Be well and God bless.

    • Hello Ken! We had our 1st snow of the season today, about 2 inches. I know that's nothing for you, but to me, it's so gorgeous and i'm like a little girl, dancing around–can't wait to get out and play in it! :D I posted a couple beautiful horticultural wonders (well, at least to me) to my FB and you might enjoy them, whenever you have time. I think you've set up where there's a block so one can't post to your Timeline, which I totally understand. I have spent the past several months somewhat shut in as I was dealing with all that Cancer illness which God healed, so I've been on FB a lot and I've found some really neat things!!! Still hope and pray things can work out for you to find your Dream Home in Maine! Gary and I will be up at Pemaquid Point in New Harbor from July 27 through August 10. Maybe by some wonderful way our paths will cross then and we'll get to meet, if you're up from Boston! God be with you and keep you safe and well! <3 Kitty

  2. A well-designed, stylish home in the middle of all that greenery – that's the kind of place I'd be more than willing to take out a mortgage in massachusetts for. I mean, honestly, who wouldn't want to live in a house like that?

  7. hello everyone, I have receive the Blog Cabin from Maine. It is now mine. I wish to thank DIYATV again for this wonderful gift. But with taxes due up to 250,000.00 I am force to sell the home. Anyone interested in buying please email me Dtown1@fuse.net. It has been very very exciting and some of my family and I are going to visit the home, before it is sold. Wish I could of afford to keep the home, but not with all the taxes.

    • Josephine. I can totally understand your thinking about listing your home. Seems like this happens all the time, where taxes gobble up a good share of anything people win. It is so sad that something like this is necessary. I can see this happening with the 2013 Blog Cabin, too, especially when the purchase price of the site was $500,000, before any building.

    • Josephine, With no cash option available for the BC winner most of us would find the sudden tax burden a problem. If you are not able to sell the home before taxes are due, perhaps you could investigate a reverse mortgage – just for the funds to cover the tax bill? That way you would have more time to sell the home. I hope DIYHGTV is helping you with financial advice. Continued good luck to you and your family.

    • So sorry to hear that you are going to have to sell. Its to bad that in this day and age, you can't really just win a contest and enjoy it. I wish you and your lovely family all the best. Blessings to you!

      Mindy_Lou on January 20, 2013 at 4:18 pm
    • Josephine I hope you and your family gets to visit this home before it is sold, it's one special house for sure. I enjoyed sitting on the back deck last summer enjoying the view of the field of flowers and the water front, (but now a field of snow). I hope you can enjoy a fire in the outdoor fireplace and grand kids can enjoy the snow and sliding down the hill next to the barn. Oh and do dress for the weather, it can get real cold here was 3F the other day.
I do love this home too, it's a reminder of my childhood home right down to the apple tree & barn.
Enjoy it while you can, and I hope it sells quickly if that's what you want.

    • Hi Josephine,
I heard you and your family got to visit the blog cabin a few weeks ago, I am so glad that you got to visit and stay there before you had to sell it. So please tell us how did you all like it and your visit to Maine?
I know the BC is in the middle of nowhere on a dead end road, but still a nice place to visit and live. I got to visit the home last Sunday when they had a open house and enjoyed it a lot, just want to wish you good luck in selling it.
We would love to hear what you and your family thought of it, what you liked and didn't like about it. What was some of your favorite things that you took home with you. Did you get to enjoy the hot tub and fire place and get a walk down to the water front? How long did you get to stay at the house before you all had to leave? Would you care to share any pictures of you and your family enjoying the BC, would be great too.
thanks for any answers, pictures or story you would care to share with all of us.
      Rhonda

  8. Dear Turner Family, I can understand your need to sell this wonderful home to pay for the winnings taxes, not to mention the property taxes. Perhaps a reverse mortgage would help you out. If no seller is found I wonder if you could sell the house just to cover the taxes and take the difference between what the appraised value is and what you get for it as a loss. That way the "newer" owner could afford it and be the homes forever owner? Just a thought. Best of luck to you and your family. I hope you have a chance to visit and enjoy the glorious state of Maine. It truly is "THE WAY LIFE SHOULD BE". God's Blessings. Becky<3

    • Yes, Becky! Actually, I wasn't aware that Ken's FB email wasn't working–BUT I was able to Message him via FB, since we are FB friends! I also have posted again to Josephine, as has Ken, with Kenneth's yahoo email address, so they should be able to connect! Ken wants this place so much! Losing his Dad last Fall was hard on him and I know he wants to be closer to home and Family. I pray that God will work in the situation…in EVERY WAY!!! :) Bless you for sticking with us! Love, Kitty<3

    • Ken, The FB account doesn't work. I sent you a message and it came back. I will try to send another email. Hope you have heard from the Turners. It has been cold here in southern Maine. This morning it was 13 degrees. Staying warm with the use of the wood burning 1929 stove in my kitchen. Be well. Becky:)<3

  9. That is quite the cabin. I can only imagine how much something as usually benign as garage door repairs perth would cost for a stunner like that.

    • Dear Josephine, Ken's Facebook email isn't working properly for some reason but I did reach him by Messaging him and I see that he has contacted you and given you his yahoo address (ken_dayjr@yahoo.com). I really wish there had been a way for you and Family to keep the Blog Cabin–or for DIY to buy it back from you, at least. You have a beautiful Family!!! Hopefully, somehow, things can workout where you still can feel like you have been blessed with the win. God be with you and yours, and guide you with His Wisdom as you make each plan for your future! I gave you my telephone number in Virginia, if I can help in any way. In His Love, Kitty

    • Dear Josephine,
I hope this greeting finds you well. I'm writing to you once again to inquire about your decision to sell your dream home. Wondering if you have put it on the market and who the listing agent is. I drove by last week in hopes to find you there but unfortunately all I found were a few uprooted trees in the front yard. Please feel free to contact me if you list it. I look forward to hearing from you.
      Best wishes,
      Ken
