Preserving Land for Future Generations

Blog Cabin 2012 Land Donation

Big news, folks! DIY Network has donated a portion of the Blog Cabin 2012 property (30 wooded acres, to be exact) to the Medomak Valley Land Trust (MVLT) in Waldoboro, Maine.

The forested strip of land, previously owned for generations by the Robie family, stretches between Dutch Neck and Gross Neck Roads and abuts 18 acres that are protected with a conservation easement held by MVLT. Together, the properties protect close to 1,000 feet of frontage on Peters Pond, a 12-acre pond that is distinguished from others in the watershed because of its depth (60 feet), steep granite cliffs, high shoreline and completely undeveloped watershed.

“We have been working with members of the community to find a way to protect it since the Robie property first came on the market in 2007,” says Liz Petruska, MVLT’s executive director. “When we heard about Blog Cabin, we contacted DIY Network to discuss potential conservation options. Thanks to their generosity, this important property will be permanently protected.”

“The Robie Farm is the last of the original land grants on Dutch Neck that has not been sub-divided or developed over the centuries,” says Eric Stark, a Blog Cabin 2012 neighbor whose property is also conserved. “Its presence reminds us of what life used to look like in Maine. The relationship between the land, the people, the farms that sustained them and the waters they harvested for fish, clams, oysters and lobsters is still visible on this property. It is very different than the relationship we have to these things today.”

Note to fans: The Blog Cabin 2012 Giveaway, which includes a lovingly renovated, circa-1884 cape cod and 21 acres of land, launches in August. To learn more, visit our Coming Attractions page.

  4. I would like to know what kind of wild life is in the woods of the land trust, and the woods in back of the barn? After watching NorthWoods Law on the animal planet, there seems to be lots of black bears in Maine, so are there any in those woods …LOL..

    • Maybe someone could go into the woods with a picnic to find out if the bears are there today. ;)

    • Have they announced what the package includes?

MS RN on March 15, 2012 at 4:25 pm
    • Click on the videos for the explanation…. as you can tell by the BLOG, 51 acres is no longer part of the package.

CarlaB on March 19, 2012 at 4:22 pm
    • No not yet. There's nothing confirmed about what the prize package will contain yet and they never announce it until they start the sweepstakes (August 13th this year). Then they will publish the rules and included in those will be the prize package description. Until then nothing is definite. DIY will also include the ARV of the prize. This is the total value amount of the package and the figure the winner must pay income tax on. In the event DIY can't offer the prize package they will offer the ARV in cash to the winner in lieu of the house (This happened in 2009). Good luck. :)

  7. Wonderful! My 1st visit here for this home. Love the mastery of choices made thus far by everyone. Love the rich wood tones that are being shown with color choices like the cabinetry, floors and glad the wall choice was selected over beadboard. Yay! Oh, the color and linear feature for the fireplace was an easy one to like as well. Love this farm like creation being built for that lucky person to homestead it. Wow, it has so many feature to love, adore and hope you like cooler weather. Oh, I certainly do. LOL.

Just love it will be with the sage green palette it will be. I'm thinking Green Gables all the way with a cup of hot coffee and hot bread or muffins which would you like? Small orchard, gardening extravanganza, canning, small orchard or yes! Just a nifty wonderplace to be and gorgeous area to be self sufficient, sustainable and happy with this dream cabin, but home!

  9. What I see so far, I'm of this mindset to adore this one better than any other of the dreamhomes, or any of the places built I've see to date as of yet. It has the most potential with a assudry of elements it has naturally in my perspective. I would love to aspire to this home. It's been what I've been missing, LOL. A place to be & what I've been looking for us to move to next. A place to retire to for sure with so much to do and be yet. Love it. Can't wait to see this place unfold. I'm in with putting my name in this hat for a chance that's for sure. Might just be applying more than once or twice as the others only got me to do so far.
