        Blog Cabin

        Feb 11

        Update From the Home Site

Recent snow has slowed the progress a tad, but roof shingles have been installed and the team will soon be running plumbing rough-ins based on the kitchen vote, electrical rough-ins and the hot water boiler heat system. The pre-finished fiber cement siding is also slated for installation.

Don’t forget to cast your votes in the current People’s Choice master suite round. Next week, we move onto family spaces!

        1. Glad you are still making progress despite the weather. I just voted on the master suite choices – wow. I love the wall bath filler and would love to see that "in action." I also really like the contemporary shower head, and I had a terrible time choosing between the three bath tile choices. They're all beautiful and I'd love to see how they catch the light in the space in the blog cabin.

          • Speaking of light, and taking advantage thereof, I don't think the upstairs guest suite is utilizing that space as best as they could. Unless of course, it has something to do with structural reasons, but, I think that room needs opened up completely so both windows can stream natural sunlight into that space. A large closet can be placed along the back wall adjacent to the entryway to that room. I just think it would make more sense for that space. If those partitions are there for support, may I suggest support beams in their place, and it would also provide aesthetics to the ceiling giving it more character. At least that's what I would do….

Lori on February 12, 2012 at 3:18 pm
          • (In addition to my previous comment) Honestly, the upstairs bathroom could probably even be extended into the guest bedroom space once those walls are out of the way. Yes, it would create a longer hallway, but, it would give more symmetry to the guest suite and provide more space in the bathroom. It appears as though the door is right up against the sink, according to the revised floor plans. But, I think it would also provide more space for a closet in the bathroom too if there isn't one already there. If so, I would assume it's under the stairs going to the attic space. But still, who wants a tiny bathroom with a crammed toilet space that's in plain view if someone accidentally walks into the bathroom while you're in there? Does anyone agree? If you look at the floor plans you'll see what I mean.

Lori on February 12, 2012 at 3:39 pm
          • This is the first time I've been completely in tune with everyone regarding the choices. I'm sure the bathroom will have an upscale twist to it seeing some of the options. I'm so ready to see the finished project.

        2. Thank you Mary for the update…….The roof looks great. I hope we will get new time-lapse Photos soon. Can't wait to see what is next to vote on……….My biggest concern is the 2 tone green siding that was voted on by the "non" Bloggers….. 95% of the online Bloggers did not vote for the greens…If you and DIY read our Blogs, you saw our pleas for NO green siding.
The locals in the neighborhood has stated their disappointment of DIY applying these drab green colors to this Beautiful old home and said the greens would cheapen the looks of this 1884's Farmhouse and would take away the charm this old Historical home has now…Please reconsider the Greens………..

          • I have to say that I am getting annoyed that some people think that the little group of hardcore bloggers are somehow "entitled" to more of a say than someone who comes on and merely votes. Everyone who looks at the Blog Cabin can vote up to ten times daily, no more, so everyone who votes has an equal say. Also, some seem to have the attitude that regular bloggers are somehow more "entitled" to win. It's a contest, pure and simple. A person who comes on the last day, never blogged once and rarely voted may win. That's just the way it goes in a contest. Let's enjoy the process, debate over the merits -or lack thereof -of celedon vs moonlight and have fun!

Lea on February 11, 2012 at 1:56 pm
          • I agree, Lea. Just because someone has the time and inclination to post frequently does NOT make his or her opinion more important than those of us who follow the Blog Cabin without commenting. The team that actually puts the whole house together will incorporate our choices into what will be – I'm sure! – a fabulous finished home.

          • Hi Jennie, and thanks, Mary for the picture of the partial roof I'm still hoping for a miracle and that you will be dropping a Widow's watch between those chimneys, to let light into the Family room and Library/hall and to give us the oomph factor that is now missing from this beautiful place which was….The roof is a pretty color: would look great, if you kept the house white traditional Maine Cape as it was, to preserve some of her history. We bloggers, by the majority are begging you to keep the integrity of this 1884 beauty and don't ruin her by painting her with drab phlegm green non-Maine like colors which over 95% of the Bloggers, including many locals, did not vote for!!! Please shift gears here !!! You will be doing a lasting favor to Waldoboro and the Dutch Neck Neighborhood and to the DIY reputation as well! Thank you! xDB)<3 Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on February 11, 2012 at 2:02 pm
          • Jennie, YES, the roof looks great, however, it wasn't my choie… The siding paint scheme is what the majority chose and it will be fine. If you were to travel New England…you would see those colors on fine homes along the coast and lakes. My parents owned a home in Millinocket, Maine and it was painted green and no one complained. To be so lucky to blog your opinion is a wonderful option that many are unable to do and their vote is their voice.

            Comanchero502 on February 13, 2012 at 11:24 am
          • The roof wasn't my choice either!!

            Jennie/Florida on February 21, 2012 at 10:28 pm
          • Hi Coman, I'm curious to know about your last sentence, you wrote….."To be so lucky to blog your opinion is a wonderful option that many are unable to do and their vote is their voice"…
I don't understand your comment, if they are able to vote, then why aren't they able to Blog . What is keeping them from blogging and expressing their opinion? Just curious!
Yes, I have seen many homes that are painted green and I think in the right area, they are Lovely and green is one of my favorite colors…. But when neighbors of the BC and in the surrounding area are blogging that the two-tone green home would not look good in their neighborhood and would look out of place…and cheapen the old Farmhouse and take away its charm…. I started campaigning for them because they were upset. These people have lived there for generations and the family has lived in that home since 1884. and past on from generation to generation. Of course, the neighbors don't like change and when some outsiders come in and start making changes to their scenery and neighborhood and start painting the old Farmhouse green, they are concerned…
I can understand that …..So I tried to help them by not voting for the green house and tried to get others to reconsider their vote.. The majority rules….. We'll see, maybe it will turn out OK

            Jennie/Florida on February 22, 2012 at 10:01 pm
          • It is starting to get really boring hearing about us supposed "non-bloggers." I voted for the greens because of the materials/textures used, but I also think green will be just fine. As for complimenting the barn, what better than complimentary colors, plus the barn IS across the road. Despite "95% of the online Bloggers" not voting for the green (which I don't know where you get your numbers), the majority of the VOTERS did like the green so I guess the point is mute.

skirdie on February 14, 2012 at 2:48 am
          • As far as the voting is concerned, it is too late for the green siding to be changed out now – hopefully Knickerbocker will realize how that will make the house look and will compromise by having the majority of the house white or gray and use the green as a trim feature. (I can dream of a perfect world can't I?). I just remembered that growing up in Maine, all of the State Liquor stores were painted that dark green color. A slang name for a liquor store was "Doc Greens"; as in "I'm going to Doc Greens for some medicine". Just saying….;)

          • Hi Jennie…I vote every day and my blog's rarely get posted and it''s very frustrating. A few comments like to you make it but nothing else. I understand and agree with so many bloggers and give the thunbs up to most. I see your live in Florida…I as well, in Fort McCoy. I live in the woods and have a hobby farm as my enjoyment. My family is from Maine and my kids live all over New England…and the distance between us is a sad story. Keep blogging for I like to read your posts.

            Comanchero502 on February 22, 2012 at 10:55 pm
          • Hi Coman…I live on the east coast near the Kennedy Space Center… Is Fort McCoy, the one in the Orlando area?? What exactly is a Hobby Farm?? I love to Paint with Oils and Acrylics.I've done quite a few paintings. I did make crafts of all kind, Plus designed Floral Arrangements, but gave it all up. Now my hobby is my yard…I have half an acre that I "play" in when weather permits….
Coman, It's sad that your family is scattered.in Maine and doesn't live close to you. Family is so important and time passes by so fast. We all need to be close to our families and enjoy them as much as possible. I know sometimes circumstances deprives us of that…..BUT, Maybe you will win the "Old Green Farmhouse on Dutch Neck Rd." so you can be close to your Family…..Good luck to you!!!!!

          • Hi Jennie…It is so nice to hear back from you…blogging is new for me. We are NE of Ocala just outside of the Ocala National Forest. I retired from Sheriff's Office in Charlotte County, lost our home in hurricane Charlie and started live over at age 60. We have 10 acres of mostly pines and scatered within I started my "Hobby Farm"…blueberries, vineyard, vegetable and flower gardens, chickens and currently working on a fish pond to raise Talapia. All of this a hobby where we give most of our labors of love to the needy. Or, helping them start their own gardens. This is something I learned as a child from my father At one point in my life I started a floral shop…and as you know you never have a holiday where you can spend it with family. I guess staying active in retirement sort of takes the sting out being away from family. Lots to tell about loosing your children for your service in Vietnam….and then to finding them 30 years later. And to this day we live so far apart. Thank you for the good luck wish and I wish the same for you….I know you will love it or maybe you or I would be blessed by the winner for a Maine Vacation.

          • Jennie…Thanks for comments and good wishes I send the same to you. I posted a reply last night, however, this morning I don’t see it. Maybe it was to long winded. We are in the Ocala area…just outside the National Forrest on 10 acres of mostly pines. In 2005 we lost our home in Port Charlotte during hurricane Charlie and started over in Fort McCoy…where we built a cracker style home and started our hobby farm. Scattered about we have a blueberry patch, vegetable and flower gardens, a vineyard, chickens and currently working on a fish pond where we’ll raise Tilapia. I should update my Facebook page with pictures…

        3. Thanks Mary, the new roof looks very nice. I have to say Camac and Lisa did a very good job in describing the color. It does look reddish brown, with just a smattering of dark grey.
So the main heat source will be a hot water boiler heat system—sounds practical for Maine.
Southern girl here asking Locals what do ya'll think?

Mel on February 11, 2012 at 1:15 pm
          • Moist heat–good for you! Ubiquitous in Maine I think it's a good choice. Now if we could just get DIY to change the exterior color!!! Green phlegm NOT good for Maine!!! Or liked in this neighborhood, for that matter! <3 Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on February 11, 2012 at 1:49 pm
          • Thanks Local girl Kitty for the reply–so we have a solid heat choice here!

Mel on February 11, 2012 at 2:38 pm
          • Hot water radiators don’t produce moist heat. The hot water running through radiator pipes produces 'dry' heat.

If you check out the company they do all sorts of heating and cooling systems including attic AC heat pumps, on demand hot water systems, hot water radiators and high-efficiency forced air systems. So there' no telling which system and for what purpose they were there. It would be very interesting if they used an attic AC heat pump for cooling. That would explain the stairs to the attic at the rear of the house. DIY used a hot water radiant system in the 2010 house for heating where there was, previously, only baseboard heating. However, in this house there was a forced air system in place (as well as other heating options) and DIY most often uses that system, which would be my first guess on the heating. Also, there are no radiators drawn into the plans. In 2010 they were, clearly, drawn into the plans as they occupy a lot of space.

Clive on February 13, 2012 at 11:49 am
          • Hi Clive–expert to the rescue–Mel, please take heed! I was picturing my Grandparent's old radiators through which steam came and there was a bit of moisture along with heat, when I was a girl. Now being a girl, then, I wouldn't have known if the radiators were properly working or not–but my grampa was an engineer/inventor at Stanley Tools, so I assume he knew his house pretty well too. Hee hee. Thanks for straightening local girl out, Clive!

DwnSoDwnEaster on February 13, 2012 at 12:17 pm
          • Mel,__ I thought the roofing color was interesting. Do you think it looks "old world"? I think that will work out nicely, but I'm sure DIY planned it that way….lol Yes agreed, Camac and Lisa did a good job with descriptions.
Stupid question time again ;) hot water boiler heat system, practical? If the system is run with water, would that affect the well? Would be moist heat too? Not saying you are wrong, I just don't know the first thing about mechanical things, but not to worry, I can turn the thermostat up and down with out any trouble:) if you don't know perhaps we should consult with Clive……………..or who ever is knowledgeable about such things :) Windee :)

Windeeone on February 11, 2012 at 8:28 pm
          • Don't worry about it Windeeone. Hot water systems are closed loop and have nothing to do with the well. Just play with the thermostat to your hearts content! ^_^

        4. Based on the truck out there yesterday, a large and respected local company, Midcoast Energy Systems, was at work. The company does heating, plumbing, water, electrical, etc. so they could be working on a lot of things, but since they mentioned the hot water boiler system that may be the project right now. We'll have to see if this will be an oil burner system or propane or something else. I do think a hot water system is better than forced hot air or electric.

I just realized this home will have all new plumbing, heating system, hot water heater, electrical, walls, floors, roof, appliances, tubs, toilets, sinks, structural supports just to name a few! .It's almost new, but better than that! Wow….I have to wonder if they knew what they were getting in to with this home? I don't think they knew about the floors unless it could be seen from the basement?
Nice to see a vintage home be restored!!!!………………………….Windee :)

Windeeone on February 11, 2012 at 8:50 pm
          • Hot water heat is when heated water is sent through the house to radiators- could be the old fashioned cast iron type or baseboard style. As the water cools, it flows back down to the boiler to be re-heated.

          • Greetings fellow bloggers – We have 5 inches of snow here in Western PA! Hope everyone is staying warm. Speaking of heat –GEO THERMAL HEAT would be nice — It might be a stretch for the Blog Cabin 2012 budget though. Just a thought! ; )

Lilly on February 11, 2012 at 9:18 pm
          • When I bought my parents house after my father passed away, there wasn't someone living in the house full time, so I had them put an antifreeze (don't remember the specific details) in the heating system water and then I didn't have to heat the house during the winter when no one was there. I don't know if they do that as a routine thing now in Maine, but it would be a good idea – particularly if they don't provide a whole house generator.

        5. I must be part of the 5 percent of blogges who like green….my charming little house is painted green and I constantly get compliments on the changes I've made to my home, including the color. Just be patient and see what the results are, if you win Paint It the color you want.

smokesmom on February 11, 2012 at 2:09 pm
          • Smokesmom green is one of my favorite colors. I am very fond of mixing greens with browns, even soft yellows. My only concern for the exterior green color is because of the red barn. I have been looking at pictures of red barns with green trim and green metal roofs, and have started finding the look OK! It is growing on me. I know mixing red & green together for Christmas has been around Forever, but I mix green with gold! You are right, in the end the home & barn will blend somehow. Maybe they will use red shutters, red flower boxes, and a red door on the home, and a green trim and roof over on the barn. In the end it will all work out. IMO the new roof looks like it will be quite complimentary to greens & reds.

Mel on February 11, 2012 at 2:34 pm
          • Excellent response. That is the real issue. If they win they can paint it any color they want. By the way our house is also painted green and we and our neighbors love it!

DKJJ on February 11, 2012 at 3:19 pm
          • To those of you thinking the exterior can be painted over-I am not sure that siding with the baked in/ impregnated color can accept painting over.

LLColeman on February 11, 2012 at 9:02 pm
          • I had the same thought about changing the color of the siding.
. As stated above, it's a pre-finished fiber cement product. It doesn't sound like something you'd paint. I think it's meant to be maintenance free.

          • I'm one of the ones' who does not 'do' green; there is no green in my house except for plants; I will admit though, there are some very pretty greens…….turquoise, mint green, soft baby green……..I just think the green choice that we were given is a not so pretty green !!

gremol on February 11, 2012 at 3:57 pm
          • Precisely the problem I have with it! I wear green. I even have decorated with green–the right shade in the right place. but the shades used for this house were drab and sad–I would want a happy house color–upbeat, more amenable to creative design as well. I would also want to respect the sensibilities of the neighborhood…:)xDB)<3 Kitty

          • I'm afraid I still have no understanding of these "points" that are troubling you , Kitty. I just read the comments made and pay no attention to the mysterious numbers and symbols. Who's keeping score anyway?

Camac on February 12, 2012 at 4:39 pm
          • Carole, Hi! It's not the points that are really troubling ME—they are apparently troubling a person who months ago began a computer blog attack on my entries/posts and often, also, on people who posted to me or I to them. I don't know why he zeroed in on me, mainly but he also tries to hurt my blogging friends…. The only way he could affect us was by trying to lower our "ratings" that is, the points that the IntenseDebate rates participants as to their relevancy, positive acceptance by other bloggers, are these bloggers of interest (i.e.to read, to follow, that sort of thing) is my understanding. I made a conscious decision to bless him each time he dings me–and I can tell, when he hits my thumbs down. Admin is working on it too, and has had to remove a very vicious verbal attack which he made upon me a couple months ago; but I am trying to peaceably end the problem through blessing him and praising the Lord because he has again stalked me. I'd rather deal with him with a positive testimony rather than the opposite. I don't care about the points, but that seems to be what he's demonstrating as his operating manner at present. I'd like this to end on a positive note, in any case. In any case, this person appears troubled and no one would like for this to escalate. Make sense? <3 Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on February 12, 2012 at 5:09 pm
          • Just so you know Kitty-I don't pay attention to the ratings either. I would totally ignoreo.0<3

ruffybc on February 13, 2012 at 9:15 am
          • Ruffy, I would totally ignore if I didn't feel the Internet to be too accessible to anyone, because of social media! The "points" issue simply lets me know my stalker is still there, lurking.–if nothing else. When he hits rapidly, several posts, including on several blog entries of my friends, I know he's worked up, though I still don't know why. Again, this is not about "caring about points" the points are a "marker" that he is worked up and active–but it could get worse…. If he escalates, then we might have danger problems, like backgrounds info checks, addresses revealed, other things to worry about–do you see where I'm going? I am doing what the authorities want me to do–be aware and watch. If following him by following my points is the only way, then so be it. I personally could care less regarding my points–am having too much fun with all my wonderful new Bloggie friends–but I am going to wish blessings upon this guy when I notice his hits rather than curse him, for that way, I believe, God may move his heart and he will leave me alone–or the authorities will stop him from stalking me–and yes–he is stalking me–one does not ignore that! It is very unnerving to be on the receiving end of a stalker, no matter what way they are currently stalking you–you don't know to what degree they will escalate their attack because you don't know what's inside their head…. Right now, he's simple—he just doesn't want me or my friends to have "points" But what will he think of next? o.0:|<3 Kitty

          • Kitty,
I do hope that the powers that be on this site are reading this and reacting in the appropriate manner. If there is something they can do to stop this-you are right it could be dangerous. That is not what this blog is about. I see your concern.

ruffybc on February 14, 2012 at 9:40 am
          • I get your logic Kitty, but I would just totally ignore him in terms of posting anything that lets him know you have noticed. If he is not getting any visible reaction he might move on. Let the Blog Admins handle any strange behaviours they notice or that you let them know about.

windsmurf on February 15, 2012 at 2:28 pm
          • I'll try to do that, though this has gone on so long I don't think Admin is taking it seriously. Nebraska once said she was stalked–it may have been a student of hers, I'm not sure that I remember correctly; but it is not something to be taken lightly. With all the ease of getting info about others on the Internet one cannot be too careful. Thank you for your advice and concern, Windsmurf! I'll try what you said for a season .Then let's see where that takes us… <3<3<3

I can visualize our beautiful Blog Cabin many pleasing colors, variety is the spice of life….thank goodness!

          • I'm not into decorating with green, but maybe the green for the outside of this house will look better in outdoor light, than it does on our computers.
East coastal green,I hope. Also they could paint the barn,a lighter color with light green accents.

Angelways on February 12, 2012 at 2:21 pm
          • That's a good point, Angelways, perhaps it will look better, once installed. It just isn't too Maine-like, IMHO. Have a great week! :D <3 Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on February 12, 2012 at 3:40 pm
          • Thanks Kitty & I do know what you mean. It's not a common color for the outside of a farm house. Right ?

Angelways on February 12, 2012 at 3:59 pm
          • Personally, I don't care at all for that particular green combination for any house–but that is my own opinion. It is also my perception that it doesn't fit in with Maine traditional farmhouses nor with Greek revival style homes. This is not a Victorian painted lady either. Each to their own taste, I say. But I do agree that we can be civil and kind to one another in expressing our differences and should be so. Camac is correct about the traditional Maine Barn color style as well. Maine has its ways and some things just don't get changed by folks from "away" without locals feeling their discomfort, as is their right….o.0:S<3 Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on February 12, 2012 at 7:49 pm
          • This year it was hard to tell what the colors would look like on the B.C. because of those drawings.Last year we bloggers had nice pictures of the house(with the colors on it) to choose from & it turned out great. This fine Cape Cod & Barn will make the locals proud, just like the other Blog Cabins have.

Angelways on February 12, 2012 at 10:39 pm
          • Well, Angelways, I personally think the jury's going to be out on that for a while, with that green siding color–which I do not like. I don't think it fits the neighborhood and I don't think most neighbors will care for it either–but that's a tradition thing. It's an ugly green on top of everything, IMHO, but you're right, it was easier last year to see the house with the visual images of the colors applied. That would have been nice to have this year too. If for some amazing miracle i win this, I'll have to figure out how to paint this new impregnated material–either white or red (if white won't cover the green) Trim the red with white, the white, with barn red. Tradition reigns !B):*<3

DwnSoDwnEaster on February 13, 2012 at 12:35 pm
          • Now you're messing with tradition. Apparently, all the barns around here are supposed to be red (even if it needs re-painting) or weathered gray or brown shingles. At least that's what all of them are.

Camac on February 12, 2012 at 4:43 pm
          • Sorry, just an idea to help it blend with the house. Here our barns are painted differant colors.I'm sure everything will work out fine.

Angelways on February 12, 2012 at 7:34 pm
          • I love a red barn in the right place:):p But, in this case I would prefer the weathered gray or plain shingles. Boy! the green color??I don't know?? I love certain greens-it would have to be just the right shade of green for me to warm up to it. I cannot get a true feel for the color they (DIY) are proposing for this home. I guess I would like to see some good pictures with homes that show the color on them-to get the proper feel for the overall look. House colors are tricky things and very expensive to change and very personal, hard to live with if you do not like it. I feel that is why we are getting so much discussion about this point. You see this color everytime you walk into your home-not like you can ignore it?o.0 I wish when we have these serious discussions we would get some response,in put from someone at DIY or who ever?

ruffybc on February 13, 2012 at 9:23 am
          • You have a good point, Angelways , Computers don't do justice to colors and I'm hoping you are right… Green is one of my favorite colors and I have different shades of green throughout my home, but they're more of the soft greens, rather than bold colors like the forest, sage or Moss greens..I would hate to loose the Old red barn color, but if it takes changing the color to match the home, that would be best…I think flower boxes on the barn windows would look good also, especially if they use them on the front windows of the home………
When I look at the very top of this page and I see the house and river setting with all the green around it, I can't imagine this home painted a 2 tone green in that setting…..There will be no Pop or Wow…. I'm afraid the home is going to blend in with the trees. I hope I'm Wrong.
We know the greens won, so now we'll have to wait and see what they do with it. I'm not sure if Victoria would have a say in that decision making, but I hope she does …..she is a great Designer……Angel, I like your positive thinking………I'm trying………

            Jennie/Florida on February 12, 2012 at 5:01 pm
          • Jennie you may find when the green goes on, especially since you do really like the color, it will work out. I know you're just like me and really care about curb appeal. :)
NC barns are traditionally red or weathered gray just like Camac stated Maine barns are.
I fully understand the need to preserve local tradition.
I know how you feel—it wasn't too long ago myself I was struggling with how close this home sits to the road. The locals on this blog really helped me see that can be normal for Maine, and part of the homes charm. It's been a long, slow journey, but by the time the landscaping shows are airing on DIY I think I'll be OK with the closeness of the road.

Mel on February 12, 2012 at 6:09 pm
          • Hi Mel, I did say that green is one of my favorite colors, but they're so many shades of green. Those shades of green chosen for the BC are not my favorite greens, especially for this old Farmhouse. I really hate to see them change the Barn color to match the house………..I love that Red Barn…
But when we have local bloggers that live on Dutch Neck Rd and neighbors in the surrounding area, telling us those colors would be wrong for this Farmhouse and this neighborhood, then I want to do the right thing by not using those colors… This Home should be a Happy event for all involved and neighbors too..I just want whats best for this home, Historical wise, the neighborhood and of course for the Winner…I know I won't win this Beautiful place, so I'm not blogging to win, I'm blogging because I enjoy the whole process of voting for things to decorate the home, I love to decorate, especially love the landscaping and meeting new Bloggers and making friends …
My first blog was the 2008 Blog Cabin in Tennessee and it was a great experience and I've been hooked ever since. I have learned so much through the years and have enjoyed being part of the whole process…Each year the BC's change.. but the Blog Cabin has great bloggers who are smart, creative, helpful, kind, considerate, thoughtful, understanding, delightful and funny…a great blogging Family!!!
Each year I look forward to the next Blog Cabin adventure..so exciting and fun…
Can't wait to see who is showing up for the landscaping. I hope Ahmed will be landscaping the backyard….. Don't you???……..Bedtime, good night!!!!

            Jennie/Florida on February 13, 2012 at 2:18 am
          • Jennie: You stated a good point(I forgot in my prior post) the point that the neighbors have made comments regarding the color selection of green being wrong for this home?? What is with that? You are absolutely right it should be a good experience for the home owner and the neighbors. Like I said I wish we would hear from someone? Maybe they could show us some examples of homes using the colors they are proposing-so we can make an educated and informed decision? If this were my home already I would be doing just that in a paint store they have the software to do that with almost any color?? They could show the original home with the color they have selected??;)o.0

          • Jennie so well said. :) I guess we all have various reasons for being here, and mine are very similar to yours, the only thing I can add is that I really enjoy the blog cabin hosts and their crews that put the final touches on the project. That seems so special to me, knowing they are putting our winning votes into the home.
Jennie the blog figured out Matty Blah Blah will be doing the back yard. This may have been when your were sick :( He is now the host of Yard Crashers. I have been heartbroken, first over D&D not returning for a 6th yr of BC and then finding out Ahmed will no longer have a show on DIY. I have cried over this. Those 3 guys are MY absolute favorite hosts on DIY! Thank goodness we are getting Jason, Josh and Matt M. I wanted Marc B back for the kitchen this year, but sadly that didn't happen either.

          • People move on and in the high speed world of TV entertainment that's even more so. The original, and by far the best, host of Blog Cabin, Amy Devers left the show and DIY network altogether just after the first, and only real, cabin was built. Maybe she knew something? :(

Anniesown on February 14, 2012 at 12:06 pm
          • That's interesting and I didn't know it, Anniesown! I really didn't become aware of Blog Cabin till they did the NC mountains one, and I didn't follow it closely then–nor did I try to enter. My 1st entry was Bethel, it interested me because I was a child of the 50s-60s–though I was never a flower child as were the Woodstock attendees near Bethel. :) Tee-hee. When DIY came to Mathews, VA, I was hooked–It was near home. But I only began blogging this year. You're so right–the entertainment industry, yes, remains fickle, even if one is an expert in one's field, as is Ahmed, and are D&D, etc. xDB)o.0<3 Kitty

          • Hi Mel..thank you for the updates on the DIY Guys……I didn't know Matt does Landscaping…..I know he helped Jason at Twin Coves in the front yard, I remember Jason kidding him about the hard work outside, compared to Matt's job inside using a hammer and asked Matt if he was up to the challenge.
What happened to Ahmed??? You know, I did read somewhere that he has a Landscaping business of his own, I think in California, maybe his business has gotten so big and is probably overloaded with demand, he decided to give up DIY… .I hope not….He is one of my very favorites…..
Yes, I'm with you. I too, look forward to seeing the BC Host and the other Pros putting their final touches on the Blog Cabin. They also explain what they're doing and remarks like, the bloggers chose those items, they were using and why the bloggers made a good choice…They bring the bloggers into the home as though we were part of the Blog Cabin finale…That does make it special to us, the ones who blog and spend week after week, month after month, discussing the items to vote on and what would look best in the Blog Cabin..and finally get to see the items in the BC, is a good feeling and rewarding. I know we all have our own taste, but these Cabins aren't ours, they are decorated for the lucky winner, so we have to take into consideration, the age of the home, the style, the history, if any and the location. I think that's so important.
I hope one of the bloggers win or who ever wins, I'm sure this home is going to be so lovely inside when finished. Victoria will do her magic inside….Can't wait for the Landscaping front and back. The winner will be elated and so happy to sit on the back deck to enjoy the beautiful river scenery, so thrilled to have won this old Maine Farmhouse. They will probably forget all the minor things..Except for one thing..which is major and that is.the 2 tone Green Siding…Sorry couldn't help it. I try, Mel, but when I look at the Farmhouse now and try to picture it 2 tone green in that scenery, I can't see it for the trees……
I participate because I love the start to finish journey and all the fun that's in between………and I love DIY and the BC blogging Family!!!

          • Windee, I was replying to LLColeman's Clinical description of the material used for the siding (that won) and they are using on our BC–Ugh! and .LOL! It was described as "Impregnated" through and through so it wouldn't presumably lose it's color–which of course, is what most of us bloggers want it to do! LOL! That's what Nebraska was referring to us praying for. :o B):*<3 Kitty

Looks like we will have to plop ourselves down on the lounge chairs on the deck and enjoy the other view! lol When I read "impregnated" Oh no! came to mind. Like Angelways said, might look better in daylight than our computers…..One can only hope….I think it will look better than expected with the brown roof, Personally I'd like red but will love it if I win….lol.
            Dreaming Windee :)

Windeeone on February 12, 2012 at 9:46 pm
          • LOL! Didn't mean to jolt you like that, Windee! I kinda got a wee jolt myself, when the color was described to me–I think the description may have come from the manufacturer, but I didn't bother to check it. Nowadays, they have such sophisticated paint finishes, I imagine that they have paints for every type of material, including this new siding. I think if I won, I might paint it red, like the barn and trim it in white. Then again, white is beautiful with a red door; I have time to decide…. :) I realize that Angelways is trying to be an encourager, which is sweet and that is what she is–an encourager, and trying to see the up-side of things; but, IMHO I just can't see as pretty anything on that chosen green shade for this house. Grateful I would be to win it! And Yes! Making it more "mine" would mean using a color palette reflective of my Maine heritage! :*^_^;)xD<3 Kitty

        7. Regarding the terrace, I envision it roofed with post & beam framing, that's stained red to match the front door. I hope it has a bit of a wall that is covered in stone veneer. I wouldn't mind the portion of the home that is showing in the pic above stone veneered either for some added symmetry between the two sides. I would like to see the chimneys and brick foundation thin veneered as well. That would cut down on the green exterior a bit, for those not fond of green. I personally like a nice mix of exterior materials, that would give this home three, and it looks large enough to pull off three. Blooming plantings in red, purple and white. Large boulders strategically placed, I can just see the curb appeal now :)

          • Thanks Kitty & Ruffy. Maybe like many others on this blog I really enjoy home & landscape design. This is my secret weapon website. I could stay on it for hours! If this link works my dream home is the third one down–look at that home in complete stone veneer with contrasting roof materials, how beautiful is that home? These pics show how well stone veneer mixes with shingled and clapboard homes. The last pic is kinda how I'd like to see the terrace, with a bit of a stone wall enclosure– more like a side porch, the roof will need to go all the way across! There are beautiful designs for foyers/mudrooms on this site, kitchens, bath, garden design, just pick your style and explore. I have found my design style is a mix of traditional, ecclectic and asian-LOL If you check out this link, please just don't forget to come back here and blog http://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional/exterior

About the homes, I like 'em all! The third one down makes my heart go pitter-patter just a tad bit more than the others, but heck everyone of them is gorgeous.

Windee after we all recovered from the shock of not hitting powerball, and cried, and lamented, and wiped our running mascara off of our cheeks, we got back to work— we are planning a pie party on Friday to make us feel better!

I also love stone vaneer (all stone-let's face it!) but, it gives it that aged look to a home-solid-long lasting-close to nature look-all that speaks Maine to me!
