        2. Good Morning All!!!! It took all of 6 minutes to vote 10 times this morning. I'd love to see a time lapse right now. I'm like a child standing near all the candy in the check-out lane of the BC Store!!!!!!

        3. This is really cool. I think this home is going to great! I already like the area. Voting is fun too. Looking forward to more.

        4. I hope everyone will try to match choices to the style of the home. Although I liked the stainless tiles, to me they seem out of place in a Maine farmhouse.

AnneEliseSouth on January 17, 2012 at 12:31 pm
          • I agree- and the two door oven is really difficult to manage. The peninsula gives more counter and storage space.

Nebraska on January 17, 2012 at 12:40 pm
          • It looks like they could have extended the cabinets along the outside wall farther and given more cabinets and counter space. It's a little disappointing how little storage space they keep putting in the kitchens year after year. They keep saying these are cabins and vacation homes but they choose houses to remodel/restore with lots of property that would make it almost impossible to keep unless one made it their permanent residence. If they add a dishwasher, which I certainly hope they do, it cuts into the cabinet space even more.

peachdoctor on January 17, 2012 at 1:14 pm
          • I agree with you Nebraska about the peninsula. We have one in our home with two tall chairs. It's awesome to prepare food on and/or have a glass of wine while watching a small tv in the kitchen.

lucyourdog on January 17, 2012 at 1:36 pm
          • I liked the peninsula option too.

AnneEliseSouth on January 17, 2012 at 5:02 pm
          • Nebraska!!! you and I agree on everything;):p this might be a first!!

this is a farmhouse retreat, stainless steel tile just doesn't go!!!

and the added counter space is a must…

            maria_w_in_nj on January 18, 2012 at 9:17 am
          • I agree also! Another point to add to Nebraska's 'more counter and storage' comment is, when one is grilling and cooking outside, a peninsula becomes a "must have" to set hot foods down, especially, when you have to scurry through a slider door and need both hands to shut it after or before transporting food to the outdoor kitchen/BBQ! Gotta close slider fast! UH, heat, cold, mosquitoes–ugh! Think ALSO, dual fuel–for stove cooking, folks!!! AnneElise You're right on with the appropriateness of stainless to antique farmhouse… What can I say? love em but it's an 1884 antique cape, folks! :D :p<3<3 Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on January 18, 2012 at 10:25 am
          • I have to agree, stainless tile is just too commercial looking for a Maine cabin. I think it was the brown color of the tile in the subway photo that turned people off. :|

SID on January 17, 2012 at 12:57 pm
          • I agree, that is why I voted for the stainless even though it doesn't seem right for this house. I'm not really happy with any of the house color choices either. I think a dark color (the one that is in the lead now) will make the house look small and dreary. I voted for the mist shingles, hoping it would look like weathered cedar shingles, but white with the green trim (ugh on moldy green) would probably look best.

windsmurf on January 17, 2012 at 1:05 pm
          • But remember the color is not what we are voting for but the style!

Nebraska on January 17, 2012 at 1:53 pm
          • Thank you Nebraska! I thought we were voting on both!

          • SID and all,
Gonna be brutally honest here,,,,taking a deep breath.,,here goes,,I don't care for either of them, but could live with the brushed nickle better than the subway tile. The subway tile reminds me of what one might see in a bathroom off the highway. Is there a method to the madness?…ok, now I said it, and am probably in the dog house . Heading for the corner, will wait till DIY says,it's the dog house for you young lady……:).

Windee on January 17, 2012 at 8:29 pm
          • It's ok Windee, you can come out of time out now. Just don't do it again? LOL

lucyourdog on January 17, 2012 at 9:27 pm
          • lucyyourdog,
Thanks I could have been in the corner for ever! I'll try not to do it again, but can't promise what happens when I remove the duck tape from my mouth,:) Perhaps I should have said, the dark floor that won in the last vote put with dark cabinets plus dark tile would be too dark collectively.Wood tones can be very rich, just think it needs something else to break it up visually.Thinking maybe the tile or brushed nickel will not be used all over the kitchen?

Windee on January 19, 2012 at 6:27 am
          • Choosing the subway tiles, for me was the lesser of two evils. Neither one would be my choice for this house, I particularly dislike the brownish color of the subway tiles. It reminds me of our political choices as of late. Choose the least bad candidate. OK now Windee, heading to join you in that corner, move over!

AnneEliseSouth on January 18, 2012 at 11:28 am
          • Got room in that corner for me, too? I don't care for either backsplash choice! Why so few options??? o.0:S Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on January 18, 2012 at 3:25 pm
          • Plenty of room in the corner, does three constitute a party? If we move it over to the dog house, it better be bigger than the last 2 Dream dog houses. Now, what shall we have for party snacks? We probably need to vote on it, as this is a Blog Cabin In the doghouse party.

AnneEliseSouth on January 18, 2012 at 6:02 pm
          • Three's the charm! Almost any snack but dog biscuits–after all, I'm Kitty. Our doghouse should be insulated and have access to heat. Ummmm… maybe needs to be bigger than
last 2 Dream dog houses. From the looks of our blogger buddies, several others may be having to join us pretty soon. Maybe bring a covered dish? Where is CherylK when we need her? :) ^_^B)<3

          • LOL ….From the sounds of things.maybe we should contact HGTV to make the dog house their next project!
I second the motion to bring covered dishes.
Now on to snacks, dog biscuts, kitty treats, human snacks?…..let the voting begin :)

          • I agree with you! The subway tiles would fit the era of this home much better. I have the GE oven with the larger oven and I love it!!! The other choice would make it difficult to cook a large turkey. I use the baking drawer as a warming oven as well as bake. I have a friend who has the other choice of oven and she finds she needs to use the lower oven the most and is hard to lean over and lift heavier items out.

peachdoctor on January 17, 2012 at 1:06 pm
          • My sister has a convection oven and she said, she doesn't like it. She is a very good cook and said it dries out the meat. Have to use a probe with it but it doesn't work well. I like the old fashion oven, not to mention I can retrieve lost items….. lol

Windee on January 17, 2012 at 8:32 pm
          • Thanks for informing us, peachdoctor! I like the larger oven, personally, but I'm a kitchen and cooking fanatic–my hobby–well, one of my hobbies.xD:p Kitty

          • Really?? I liked the green and it will look very natural against the landscape with the tall green trees! =/

lucyourdog on January 17, 2012 at 1:38 pm
          • Well I seem to be on a roll here. Wasn't crazy about color choices, Are houses in that area split up color wise meaning top and bottom? I thought that was odd. Going back to the corner, till they tell me it's the dog house for you.

PS. Here is the positive side, none of us have to paint it :)

Windee on January 17, 2012 at 8:40 pm
          • lucyyourdog,
I have to agree with you. I likeed the green better than all the other color choices.
If I win might paint it red though….. :)

Windee on January 17, 2012 at 10:09 pm
          • IMHO, the green will look dark, creepy and depressing and will just disappear into all the rest of the green.

windsmurf on January 18, 2012 at 10:44 am
          • Here I go again! I AGREE!!! Green/sage is too dark and dreary–think of long fall-winter, folks!!! xD^_^B)<3 Kitty

          • I went to the James Hardie site and looked at the colors. Now I'm REALLY happy with my color choice. And with a red door, it will be perfect. Light mist shingles and Monteray Taupe seems cheery and soft at the same time, and doesn't take away from the natural beauty surrounding the house, IMHO. :D :p<3 Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on January 18, 2012 at 4:35 pm
          • I agree completely! The house has to look classic, and "Maine," and go with all seasons and background colors (autumn leaves, white snow). A bright door for accent is the perfect finishing touch.

DwnSoDwnEaster on January 22, 2012 at 1:05 pm
          • There's not much green in the landscape right now for green siding to blend with. Almost everything is shades of white, gray and brown.

Camac on January 19, 2012 at 1:21 am
          • Actually, clapboards are very common on old farmhouses, and most of the homes in the area are white clapboards. And from the pictures on the last thread, it looks like the windows are white – so how does that work with the green scheme? Green and beige, and… white? It'll be like those teeth whitening commercials…

          • I thought of you, Nebraska and said, "Uh oh!" I cannot stand red and green together, and how unharmonious would a green house across from a red barn seem to me !! Ever since designers have pushed the "color wheel" notion,( i.e. red & green are color wheel opposites) it has set my teeth on edge. I rarely like seeing most shades of green on a house-but add that red barn to the equation…not for me ! Sorry, L Y D–I know you like that trio of colors !!
I agree with the bloggers pushing for a shade of white or red… why mess with Maine charm ?
PS, Lucy's human–nothing personal re your green house…GO NINERS ! — forgive me, Giants fans.

LLColeman on January 18, 2012 at 3:44 am
          • LOL, someone has to advocate for the green here on the blog? Since my home is green I thought what the heck. Go Niners!!

lucyourdog on January 18, 2012 at 10:47 am
          • Hi Lucy… but do you have a big Old "Red" Barn across the street to go with your property?? If they painted the barn green to match the home, it might look OK, but then we wouldn't have
our Big Old Red Barn anymore………
I'm afraid it's going to look like "Christmas" all year long…Two tone Green House/ Red Barn.
Plus with all the land and trees, I think the green home is going to fade into the background… Please Lucy's human reconsider your colors…… Go Niners!!!!

            Jennie/Florida on January 18, 2012 at 5:36 pm
          • The barn next door to "our" barn is also red (to the right facing the barn). The house that goes with it is white clapboards (to the left of the "blog cabin" when facing it).

          • Mommyto8, you're darn tootin' right! (how'd you read my mind? :) ) I like green in the right setting, like clothes–BUT NOT OUTSIDE OR INSIDE HOUSE COLORS FOR MAINE!!!! Yes, Like Nebraska–I'm yellin! The sage is dark, dark, dark and drab for long cold winters. I am personally choosing the shingles with taupe trim, simply because the color choices are slim. Bluesoup said something funny but true about colors being reminiscent of teeth whitening commercials… I would have expected more of an antique cape feeling for this place. Go Nebraska! ;) :pB)<3

        7. Gosh I'm surprised people seem to prefer lap siding to the traditional "shingle siding"??? Really? A Stainless Steal back splash??? How Retro? I was anticipating some type of "Delft" or decorative tiles? Hmmm??? Would never had thought that would be an option in an old New England Home? I guess I don't know much about old New England decor. Whatever people decide I guess is ok. Interesting choices. I guess they have a gas line to the old place? Luv the fireplace/stove. Hate to have to order propane every month. That is very nice when/if the electricity goes out. Beats having to chop and lug in fire wood. Love it. What the heck is a baking drawer? Need to learn more.

hokiemom on January 17, 2012 at 12:43 pm
          • I would have preferred to have a gas fireplace than a gas stove. But then, they didn't give us that choice did they. LOL

peachdoctor on January 17, 2012 at 1:08 pm
          • Between the two, I would have also chosen the gas fireplace! I sure wish they would let us know what backdrop (stone???) they plan behind the "gas stove" It would help in selection of the color! o.0:) Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on January 18, 2012 at 10:51 am
          • I'm thinking, based on the choices given, that the designer doesn't know much about New England either. Niether the subway or stainless tiles seem right for this house, maybe glass tiles if not decorative tiles you mention. Maybe we will get lucky and they will ignore what people vote for on the tile and the siding. Gas would need to be Propane in all likelihood, generally there is no natural gas to rural areas.

windsmurf on January 17, 2012 at 1:12 pm
          • Correct, no natural gas. It has to be propane.

basincrew on January 17, 2012 at 1:28 pm
          • Basincrew? anyone? where exactly is the propane tank buried? Have not seen it referenced anywhere? Hmmm a hunting expedition. It would be good to know where it is so we don't go planting our little herb/vegetable garden right on top. I would anticipate an adorable little kitchen garden just outside the door in order to grab fresh rosemary or thyme. Love to have half a dozen little egg laying hens close by also. Please don't make me walk across the road to the barn to gather fresh eggs.
PS what is the latest price per gal on propane up there? Curious

hokiemom on January 17, 2012 at 1:38 pm
          • Ther was no gas before DIY purchased the house so they'll have to install a propane tank, as they did in the 2011 house. Probably at the rear north end where the old attached barn once stood, or close to there, so it has easy access for the new driveway I'm certain they will put on that end for a car port. :)

Anniesown on January 17, 2012 at 1:49 pm
          • As someone else also said, there is no propane there yet. They'll put a tank above ground somewhere fairly easy to deliver to, but likely out of sight as much as is reasonable. We just paid just under $5/ gal. for propane in Maine.

basincrew on January 17, 2012 at 9:30 pm
          • basincrew Holy Mother $@#!!%. Assuming you have a 500 Gallon tank and only had it 1/2 full=$1,200.00. How long does that last. Depending on the weather…would it last the entire winter? Or 6-10 weeks? Help me out on the costs involved. How do you tastefully camouflage a 500 gal propane tank? Really? You don't bury something like that? Well you can always change out your lovely gas fireplace for a coal burner.

And some of you were worried about the taxes if you win??? Minor detail .

hokiemom on January 18, 2012 at 10:40 am
          • I had oil in my old place, and I had to fill that every 6-8 weeks, at $500 a pop. That took care of all of my baseboard heating, hot water, etc. Heating is expensive in Maine, it's just how it is. I'm planning my home, and it includes a woodstove. I've looked at the pellet stoves – my dad suggested them, but there's something very comforting about watching wood burn. Plus the heat it provides is amazing. I did spend a Christmas in a cabin with one of these propane stoves and it was very nice, and maintenance free – which was lovely!

The Vermont casting stoves are nice, and they offer a wood version that vents through and exterior wall, so whoever wins, if they don't want the convenience of the propane can always put in a woodstove. Easy fix :)

          • We heat our downstairs with propane, that's approximately 1200 sq ft and also use it for stove. We live in south where the temperatures rarely go below 20 and average daytime temperature in January is 45-55 degrees and with the sun warming up the house, indoor temperature raises to 68-70 degrees. We are being very stingy with the heat due to the high cost and keep our house at 64 degrees when no-one is home and 67 when we are at home. We heed to fill the tank once a year and every other year twice. The we also have the electric bill for heating the upstairs. We have two gas fireplaces and we don't use them much because the whole house smells…. and yes, we have the fans for the fireplaces. It still smells. So my estimation is that in Maine you'd go through a lot more…. dig deep…

AnneFinn on January 19, 2012 at 8:45 am
          • All the propane tanks around here are freestanding, above ground, somewhere near the house.
Most are on an automatic refill program with one of the suppliers just like you would for oil. My last bill (December) it was $4. per gallon. I heat primarily with wood , but have a Rinnai gas heater that I keep set at 55 or 60.
A house around here that isn't white or natural gray will stand out like a sore thumb. I , too , don't like either of the tile choices and I agree the peninsula would be really handing for setting things on when going in and out to the back deck area.

          • Sherwin Williams makes a line of wonderful historic exterior paint colors. Light grey for the body of the home with the trim in either Roycroft Vellum or Bottle Green fwould had ben nice for this Cape Cod.

          • hi windsmurf–I have seen subway tiles in Victorian homes, although used more in the bath area than in kitchens..
. I hate to see things get modernized because they think that appeals to young families, and as a result, snag more viewers of a younger demographic. There are younger people who appreciate old homes and antiques. Check out the Edwardian fairs and Steam Punk craze…it is all young people who are into dressing up in full Edwardian or Victorian era clothing, and honoring inventions and gadgetry from the early industrial revolution…..

LLColeman on January 18, 2012 at 3:53 am
          • Generally speaking, I like subway tiles, but that brown color they are using in the voting is very unattractive and scared me away from it. I'd like to think they would use a color compatible with the color palette that was selected, but you never know.
Mary – is the color locked into what is shown in the voting for the tiles?
I hadn't heard about Steam Punk, I'll have to check it out.

windsmurf on January 18, 2012 at 5:50 pm
          • Probably true, Windsmurf. Designer is from central NY and only visited Maine for the 1st time this past fall. She's a great designer, but on these items, I'm a bit concerned that we're missing the heart of a an old Maine Cape. neither backsplash is correct, though both are "pretty." :) <3 Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on January 18, 2012 at 10:56 am
          • I agree whole heartedly. Maybe Victoria is reading these blogs and will reconsider. The brown subway tiles look very unattractive for a kitchen to me anyway and the stainless steel doesn't seem appropriate either. I'm between a rock and a hard place on this one.

windsmurf on January 18, 2012 at 5:55 pm
          • I agree, Windsmurf! I have begun pushing for a copper subway tile that Clive has described–I think it would soften the indoors and tie into the era in which the home was built better. Clive has a link to the company. Sorry I forgot to copy it to post for you! Oooops!

Gosh, I do hope Victoria is reading us now! Hi Victoria! Happy New Year! xD^_^<3 Kitty

DwnSoDwnEaster on January 18, 2012 at 7:11 pm
          • Kitty can you imagine a copper backsplash with stainless steel appliances! UGH!!! I don't think any designer would mix those two metal finishes, or at least I hope NOT!
I would bet there will be stainless steel appliances, which will look great with a stainless steel backsplash. Victoria will add in the right amount of "farmhouse charm" to balance out the modern look of a stainless steel backsplash if it wins the vote.
I just remodeled my own kitchen a short time ago, and it is looks warm and "farmhouse". I went with stainless steel appliances, a partial stainless steel backsplash, a modern faucet, large undermount sink, and granite countertops. All other finishes are farmhouse style , and I'd give my kitchen a "9" on pulling off a farmhouse look. Modern design appeal can be mixed fine with warm materials, like cabinetry, flooring, ceiling treatment, lighting, hardware pulls, and decor.

Mel on January 18, 2012 at 8:55 pm
          • You know, Mel, you're right. When you described your redone kitchen it sounds so wonderful! I like that farmhouse kind of look. I had to work some with what was in here already, when we bought the house and some was, to say the least, unusual. The appliances except cook top were Jennair/Maytag cobalt blue (a color I love, but might have thought twice for appliances). Deep huge double sink is black Americast had to coordinate with that one, since I needed/wanted an island prep sink–so my Island got a Kholer. Cabinets, loads of builtins were white/like new–I put in a coordinating butler's pantry with extra prep sink (all sinks have disposers) but the thing was tying this all together! The cooktop is Jennaire induction electric and I thought I'd love it but cannot stand cooking on it. Yes it heats fast, but when you need to turn heat down fast, that's impossible–bad for managing temperature needs–So there I am with hanging copper pots & pans, cobalt blue appliances black sinks black w/ pale blue pearlized granite, copper pans hanging over island, multi-color rugged tile backsplash which pulls all those colors in plus the red faux leather treatment painted walls in most of the kitchen to large dinette area and focal wall is: cobalt blue. Very hard to describe, much less imagine, but we had a budget and worked with what we could. It's definitely colorful and cheerful, cheerful and does have a super logistical great work & pantry storage layout.yes–and did I mention colorful? Heehee! I'm used to it. I suppose what I'm trying to say, Mel is, with all the colors floating around me, color of appliances was farthest from my thoughts when i jumped upon the copper bandwagon–sorry!

DwnSoDwnEaster on January 18, 2012 at 10:48 pm
          • Kitty your kitchen does sound colorful, what I appreciated the best is how you managed to make all those colors work :) I've heard designers say use only 3 colors in a room. I've tried to do that, but absolutely Can't– I Love Color. See your colorful kitchen most likely would appeal to me!!
I know Victoria can pull off the right look for the BC kitchen. It will have some modern touches, but it will also have some "farmhouse" touches, and in the end I'll be thinking what a great kitchen, and ooohhhhh I want to cook in that kitchen!!

Mel on January 18, 2012 at 11:27 pm
          • Technically, the black and white and grout in the back splash tiles are neutrals, the wood floors are "neutrals the red "leather," cobalt and the small rustic 2X2 tile varied back splash, well that's where all the color varies but it isn't that large an area, though the kitchen, dinette are, pantry and butler's pantry are quite a good size. Dinette easily seats 8. There's a peninsula that seats 2-3.There are loads of built in shelves for collectibles' display. Works for me. And I have lots of copper. I designed my copper hanging rack and it works great. Don't know what I'd do if my appliances were stainless. It was a challenge to tie together but I like it. Never bored and always stimulated to do something creative there…While colorful, it definitely has a country flavor to it, with and most well-planned layout and convenience–that part I love!B):p^_^<3 Kitty

          • What? No porcelain apron sink? I am with you on what you are thinking about when it comes to the lap siding and yes it should be traditional "shingle siding. After all this is a Cape Cod, is it not?
Thank goodness people are voting down peninsula!
Now you can stretch out the dining table for the holidays.

Hawkweed on January 17, 2012 at 1:58 pm
          • Oh, Hawkweed, I agree with you about the shingle siding for a Cape Cod-style house! However, uh, as an avid cook and kitchen freak, I respectfully beg to differ with you about the peninsula. Storage is one on-going issue, but logistics plays another part here. With a slider door, and grill, just outside, there's always the issue of transport and opening and shutting that heavy slider door with one's hands full of food. A peninsula serves as a good food parking point, plus additional seating, in addition to that more narrow counter space, if there is no peninsula. During holidays or when one needs to extend the table, I believe it will still be doable with little adjustment. A peninsula is so useful, when one begins to look carefully at the actual counter space allotted presently in this kitchen. One can never have enough counters and cabinets too. JMHO. Best 2U! ;) :p<3 Kitty

        8. We have farms and fields near us and the dirt that blows is a real issue. So, while I like white, I wouldn't vote for it because of the dirt issue. Also, I can't see green with a red barn, unless of course they're painting it. But, I can't imagine a green barn either :)
I'm glad to see the dark stove winning because it's easier to keep clean.
And I agree about the stainless tiles being pretty but not as classic as the subway tiles.

I think in that climate it would make the house look sad, dark and dreary. Just my personal opinion, apparently from the votes most folks don't agree with me.

          • The green siding certainly won't blend in around here, but it doesn't look like they're trying to have the house blend in or show it's true history and character. I wasn't excited about any of the choices.

          • I've come to the conclusion that a lot of people voting don't log in to the blog so they aren't aware of the reasons put forth here for what choices make sense for this area of the country. It would be nice to hope that Mary, Victoria and others at DIY would read and heed some of our suggestions and override the house color that seems to be leading in the voting. I don't dislike green, my house is a light sage color, but dark green is not right for this house and this location. The white siding is most traditional, and the shingles, though more appropriate for a Cape Cod type cottage, could also work. The dark green will look like a troll house. Some people expressed concern that white would get too dusty, generally speaking there is enough rain to wash the dust away and dust would show up more on a dark color than on white in any case.
