        People’s Choice is Coming Soon

        Hi all and happy holidays!

Today I’d like to share some brand-new photos from the construction site, taken by our friends at Knickerbocker Group. A new staircase is being installed and the original siding has already been stripped from the exterior.

On January 3, we plan to launch the popular People’s Choice vote. Our first round will feature a mix of flooring, roofing and great room questions. I think you are going to like the options. Stay tuned for more details as well as the launch of our “after” floor plan.

        1. Our cup runneth over today. We get to start entering for the HGTV Dream Home AND we get a new DIY blog thread from Mary telling us that on January 3 we get to start expressing our opinions through the ballot box as to the Blog Cabin's design features.

Add to that the HGTV Rose Parade and Dream Home Float on January 2nd, and we have our work cut out for us!

        2. A promise for after floor plans again, hope this time is the charm. Those new inside staris look nice and wide and looks like they take up about as much space as the old ones. But I do like 2 levels and going streight up.
          Thanks Mary

          • oops not going streight up.

        3. Can't wait for floor plans, being able to see the layout of the house is always fun to me.

        4. Those poor dudes on the scaffolding look mighty cold. The wind is blowing too! No place to escape from the weather. Hope to hear about the problems encountered and how you had to deal with them. Especially love the history lessons. Last blog cabin had details regarding the joinery and old time construction methods. Love to compare this one and that one! Did VA coast construction differ from upstate New England Methods? Please share. Love to learn more. Thanks for the new info.

          • I was wondering about the framing too, since Waldoboro is another area where ship building had once thrived… would there be similarities between the two homes ? Some of it would depend on the trees growing in the area during that time. There is a 21 year difference between the build in Maine and the build in VA, but I don't know if there were changes in construction techniques.

          • Great suggestion for DIY feedback Hokiemom. If part of the coverage for BC 2012 does feature regular updates from on-site expert and architetural designer Kim Tuttle this would be an interesting topic for her to cover.

I really loved that last year some of the original framing was repurposed into special projects that gave the VA home added character, and rustic touches.

          • Good questions, Hokiemom! I love the construction history too! Am noticing that the scaffolding photo appears to be the original front door location and flanking windows. I'm still trying to figure where they'll move that door–Or did they intend all along to keep it right there–and MOVE the existing double doors (as they have) to prep them for the Master BR entry only, and just replace the doubles with a more energy efficient single front door? That would be playfully sneaky!;) :*B)<3 Happy New Year!!!! Kitty

          • It has been cold recently like teens and blowing…..winter in Maine BUT this year has been unusual. We'll have the blistering cold and then almost spring like. Very strange!! Of course I won't complain, I don't care we don't get another inch of snow!!! hahaha

        10. As Nebraska reminded us in the last blog, (thank you, Nebraska) there will be a show about construction of the HGTV Dream Home tonight–and it is hosted by Anitra Mecadon. For those of you able to see DIY network, it is scheduled to air at " 9 P.M. Eastern and pacific" :

          • I did not see your post & missed all but the last 20 minutes of the show, this is a very nice home !!

gremol on December 30, 2011 at 2:41 am
          • I watched it, it was very interesting. I hope Anitra is going to be one of the guest host for BC 2012, she was such fun on the BC 2011. Wonder when we are going to know who is going to help with it?

            vicki_in_Utah on December 30, 2011 at 9:52 am
          • Vicki Anitra is going to be back for BC 2012!! Victoria showed us some mercy and let us know this in one of her posts. I think her & Anitra really bonded, and I can certainly see that–they are both so creative.
Anitra and her boys ( Joey & Mike) are by far my favorite addition to the DIY network in awhile. I loved her show instantly. She can make something out of garbage, literally I've seen her do it :) Also I am in complete awe of Joey–that guy is an amazing carpenter.
Victoria said the Mega Den space was huge, maybe she'll transform the man cave attic space?
I really want to see the guest host line up as well. BC would not be BC without certain DIY folks.
