Thank you for these options, Mary! I LOVE the traditional look for this home! The color pallet is perfect!
The TRADITIONAL options are so in keeping with the period of the home and the VIrginia feel of the area! There is a difference between "coastal" and Chesapeake Bay shore living. The traditional is so in keeping with the area and its original occupants
I LOVE TRADITIONAL!!
I find myself, once again, in agreement, divine Ms. D….I think it was the blue&white dishes that sold me, since my husband came complete with his own set from his grandmother (a twofer!) I personally like the barn red and the farmhouse, but not with the cabinets, countertop and tiles we've already chosen. The Coastal Chic is a bit too precious for me…so, vote with the Divine Ms. D, and me, go classic, go traditional!
This is NOT a paid advertisement from Debra G. The comments above were the sole inspiration of Cheryl K and just happen to make Debra G do the HAPPY dance!!
No collaboration, collusion, or any other nefarious circumstances were had in conjunction with Cheryl K's comments, but YEAH, YEAH, YEAH for her!!!
Are you sure? LOL
Haha! Positive-I promise!
i think the political arena needs your enthusiasm, Debra ! LOL
LOL! I have worked some campaigns in the past, but presently my clients are legislative:)
i voted for traditional will keep trying
Yeah!!! We can do this, imbarshaw!!
I totally agree with you Debra. Traditional is the way to go. The only thing I'm totally confused about is
the dish rack. PLEASE…….Tell me there is a dishwasher in that kitchen.!!!!!! I love traditional, really, but
not the dark ages. Please give us an answer for this question. Mary, alleviate my fears!
Oh, I'm certain there is a dishwasher, the dotted line next to the sink in the plans is an indication of that. But there are items I don't put in the dishwasher, i.e., my pots and pans, knives, finer glassware, so it is nice to have a dish rack to place these items after washing.
Plus, there are times (such as right now, the dishwasher is running and we are having an evening cup of tea) where I will wash and place items in the drain board. It is one of those things you don't realize you need until you need it and you are a long way from the stores that carry them LOL!
As for the traditional votes, bless you. This home is going to be such a well appointed home and the winner will be very happy to call home
I really am having a hard time understanding why the modern is taking second, Stainless steal chairs, this is not a diner. Traditional will last the test of time. I can live with the coastal but do not love that white table.
You've got me with that one. I can understand stainless appliances, but the industrial barn thing is a mystery to me… And I agree, the coastal I can live with albeit a bit bland. The traditional option really captures the essence of a Virginia farm house and adds a great pop of color. Chesapeake Bay shore is not like coastal areas of Florida or South Carolina. OK, time to vote from computer, BBerry, iPhone, husband's laptop…
I agreeI could live with the coastal also. It would be perfect if they could mix the Traditional with the Coastal. I like the Coastal Chairs, the white with Gold trim dishes (sorry not too into those Blue and White dihses) but would prefer the Traditional Table, rug, and everyday dishes.
I agree that the Traditional is the best choice..everyone VOTE!!
Good Morning Debra! I love the Traditional option as well but the Modern is in the lead…so we need to get to voting!!!
Chicago voting must be operative for the whole week! Early and often! Gooo TRADITIONAL! Haha!!
My mistake the Coastal is now in the lead, which "I" (lol) could live with but its not the PERFECT fit for that old farmhouse….please cast your votes for the Naturally Traditional option!
Yes–come on everyone–this isn't Virginia Beach, its the Chesapeake! The coastal look is completely wrong.
That's right. Chesapeake Bay is not the same as south coast casual. Virginia is very unique in this way. Gooooo traditional!!
For me it would be perfect if they would mix the coastal chairs with the rest of the traditional. I went with the coastal because i don't like the traditional chairs. I have them now and they are very uncomfortable and my husband doesn't like chair cushions.
Those willow blue dishes would be perfect for this house. I have a set that was my great grandmoters, I pull them out for special occasions.
Isn't this house going to have a Dishwasher ??? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. Assuming it does, then why is one of the items being voted on a Dish Drain ???? Does not make sense. lol
Yes, there are dotted lines next to the sink and that designates a dishwasher.
Kathy-that was my question too!:) I don't want to be doing dishes all the time. Frankly, I do not even like dishes or anything else on the counters-I like them clean and neat-no clutter:) That is what cabinets are for and a pantry. With all the company and family you need a dishwasher.
I am going with the coastal chic:)
At my house there are things that are not dishwasher safe, or that I prefer to wash by hand. Plus, it is nice if you just have a cup of tea after the dishwasher has run, and you don't want to have dirties in the sink:)
Kathy I have a dish washer and I find myself doing dishes all the time. I never put pots and pans in the dish washer, and the good steak knives, I wash them too.
I agree there does have to be a drainboard thingy:) I was checking to make sure there was a dishwasher included in this kitchen-after all they say it is a cabin/vacation home-just checking:) I also like the option to wash something after the DW is going and I also do not put pots and pans or good knives in the DW. So just making sure guys-thanks for the input.
I also have Blue Willow dishes from my grandparents-I love them and they always come out during the holidays for sevice. If I win I will have to keep the real separate from the new repo ones-what a problem:)! I can handle it!
If you have traditional platters, nice holiday items, wine glasses they are washed by hand.
very true, my goblets I always wash by hand. I like the bamboo rack, it is easier to store and grab out just for a few things. Not like that whole "system".
Hey there, Kathy! I'm afraid I have to join the chorus on this one — I have love my dishwasher, but I also have a few items like some of my higher-end plastic containers that just last a lot longer if you take a moment to do them by hand. Also have a terrific couple of pieces of anodized cookware that should not go in the dishwasher — and I love those pieces so much that handwashing them is a great trade-off (only takes a moment if all else goes in the dishwasher. And although I don't use them often, I have a couple of small pieces of family heirloom silver and a couple of serving pieces of family sterling. So yes, I absolutely need both.
For those items that can't be put in the dishwasher, I always wash, dry and put up right away.
Still nice to have a drainer to set the few pieces in/on between wash and dry (since I will always dry my hands before trying to dry any dishes).
Yes, if you have 4 dishes/bowls to hand wash, you need somewhere to set them. Not likely going to stop and dry each one before washing the next one. Your is a very practical reasoning — whereas mine (below) is more laziness.
And then there's me, who's too lazy to put them away till the following morning…..
Maybe it is for a 'quick' rinse off . . . for an 'outdoor kitchen space' . . . I have not seen too many of those having dishwashers; but IF I have to have this item when I and my family win this home . . . IT along with the 'mixer' that is now ahead will be 're-gifted' to somebody! HA! Put your names into my basket! HA! HA!
I agree completely, TRADITIONAL is difinitely the way to go. Although the other two option are ok, it's is not Chesapeake Bay material.
Right on! Traditional is soooo very Chesapeake Bay:D
I am unsure on the dimension of the dining room, but if space allows I would love for the table to be an oversized one piece (without the leaf attachment) that sits between 8-10 people.
Carolyn S.
I agree with your table choice we need to have room for our families and guest who vacations with us!
I have a wonderful table (heart pine). Sits 6 comfortably and could sit 8; but then the 2 leaves (we use on holidays) fit into each end . . . boards of table going one way; boards in leaves going at a 90° angle; and then I can easily sit 10. Very 'old farmhouse style'. Had one made for one of our sons; and now will have another made for the other. Heart pine came out of the old house that was situated on the property when we bought it. Had 'thought' about heart pine floors; but have "Pecky Cypress" paneling in 'great room' and at time . . . budget would not allow for it. But getting more and more interested in maybe doing it anyway! House is like a 'hunting lodge'. Very 'lived-in' and comfortable, although I still need to 'let a few sentimental things go'. That is the hard part!
Oh, that sounds exactly like what I was imagining. You must love it, I know I would.
I love traditional (but not the blue dishes). I also love white so I could live with the coastal chic.
BTW What happened to the floor plans?
Lee follow this link to the floor plans under photos: http://www.diynetwork.com/blog-cabin/blog-cabin-2011-flo...
Chesapeake Bay living is not the usual "coastal" version found in other locations. It is a very unique and more historically traditional arrangement. It is not a "beachy" sort of feel, but more of a refined sort of feel:)
More of a marsh lol
The racket those peepers make during the summer, will certainly be music to some lucky winner ears.
my hard of hearing ears should suit just fine, then…
Does anyone know what the Dish Rack System does besides hold dishes? How did it achieve "system" status?
A dish rack system to me is an automatic dishwasher.
There must be something special about the "system" since it's winning the vote. Maybe I should invent a laundry basket "system" or a broom and dustpan "system" or the amazing toilet brush and cleanser "system." I'll bet everyone will think they run on automatic.
I think they call it a "system" since it also has the thingy to put your glasses and cups on in the event you wash the dishes by hand.
This is how they describe it:
Advantage Dish Rack System
Spice up your kitchen and add functionality at the same time with our Advantage Dish Rack System! It is a stylish, space-saving solution for drying plates, bowls, glasses, cups or mugs. The utensil holder has an extra-large capacity, with split compartments and holes for draining. It also includes a removable drying tray that provides added drying space – perfect for any of your delicate glass items.
Made from rustproof stainless steel
Includes polypropylene utensil holder and removable drying tray
Non-slip feet
Must be the removable drying tray that makes it a "System".
I chose a bamboo system, to protect the metal edges on dishes in our kitchen. I thought it to be more gentle. It sits in the corner that is difficult to get to…which will NOT be a problem in BC kitchen. AND…if you don't have to do the dishes because we're protecting our delicate hands using the dishwasher, it holds good size pots and pans.
LOL! Go girl! I think you are on to something:)
I wouldn't call myself an authority on such things, but just in terms of the wording, I believe that descriptively, a "system" refers to something with 2 or more movable parts, usually parts that can be used independently of each other or can work together. In this case the drain board can be used underneath, or separately. And I don't know if the cutlery container lifts off or not, but you get the general idea…
I would choose the Traditional Natural if the wood had some color. In otherwords isn't natural. I don't know maybe I need to go back and look at the other winning choices for wall and floor covering since this style will actually be separate from the kitchen. Now I'm confused is the dining room attached to the kitchen or in the next room?
I think the dining room is separate (at least it was on the last set of plans). With all the beige in the kitchen, the blue would be a nice pop of color to all the beige in there, especially if some of the dinner ware is also out for ornamental purposes.
I went back and discovered that it is nearly completely separate from the kitchen. The dining room is the first room to the right as you enter the front door (so it needs to be kinda pretty). Truthfully, I envision a darker wood table, same style as the Traditional though. I also see a china hutch.
Now that I've taken a closer look at the modern, I see the table is awful. I looked and looked this morning and didn't see a table there at all, it was disguised as a sign.
I need to eat my words now, and vote for the Traditional Natural, since it's the best choice of the three. I'll even promise to vote 60 more times this week.;)
No word eating necessary…:) Without looking at the enlarged photos of the options a lot of the details get lost. Since wood ages darker with time it will just be matter of the clock and it will gete to that perfect hue you imagined! XOXO
I looked at the enlarged version this morning, it looks more 2D than 3D (yes I know pics are 2d)
I just didn't have a chance to consider that the kitchen table would be in the dining room, separate from the kitchen colors. I ddn't see the table in the beach style either, now I see it's plain and completely white. They don't usually follow the winning vote to the last detail, so things may end up different than we expect anyway.
Happy Happy Joy Joy!
Cami I disagree – I think they are now ONE SPACE. The doorway is wide and the wal is only a half wall because it has a counter / stools to join the rooms.
