          • BIG HOUSE! Hope they don't forget to put lots of BIG CLOSETS in this one…and a BIG PANTRY too!:)

        2. Awesome! I cannot wait to see how the house progresses to a beautiful masterpiece. This house is by far my favorite from DiY Network. It's enormous. The location is spectacular with the water view.

Deanna on January 21, 2011 at 1:53 pm
          • Deana, I agree, this would be my forever dream home. But I think the taxes on this waterfront home are going to be ginormous!!!

            maria_w_in_nj on January 21, 2011 at 1:55 pm
          • If you are over 65 and don't make much money there is no taxes. Except for the sales tax to start with i think.

vicki in utah on January 21, 2011 at 2:29 pm
          • Don't forget that pesky federal and state (if your state levies it) income tax on the ARV + any cash that's part of the prize. On this house that could be upwards of $300,000 owed Jan 1 next year if the ARV is near $1 million, which local bloggers have said is very possible given the location, size, amount of land and comparable house prices here. But dreams are free and whoever knows what fortune may bring?xD

Clive on January 21, 2011 at 2:41 pm
          • There is a house on sale with 11 acres, 3 bed/2 bath for $245,000. Ok, with the renovation and everything, this may be worth $350,000 to $500,000 let's say. why ruin the winner's dreams with inflated value. This is a farm house in the end.

Virginian on January 21, 2011 at 11:51 pm
          • I think everyone wants to be able to 'dream' about winning something; and whoever wins this house will probably be turning over the $$ to the IRS to pay whatever 'taxes' would be due for 'winning'; after that … you're right property taxes would end up breaking the winner [if that winner is an ordinary person]. If I WON, which I expect to do; I'd talk to my lawyer, CPA, Financial Advisor and see what 'tax' consequences would be – if it was turned into a place to rent out (vacation spot), get a realtor and maid service and go spend time up there several times a year. Winning is a 'pipe dream' for most all of us! IT IS BEAUTIFUL!

        3. Mary when are you going to let us see the floor plan? Everybody is really wanting to see it. Can you give us a date? Or jsut maybe a little tidbit here and there. Inquiring minds want to know!!!

          maria_w_in_nj on January 21, 2011 at 1:57 pm
          • I agree; we need to be able to see the final floor plans in order to vote intelligently!

kesretired on January 26, 2011 at 1:31 pm
          • The more I look at this house, the more I also want to see the plans; before (with dimensions) and the proposed restoration. How many bedrooms are going to be on the 2nd floor? I think now the dimensions including ceiling heights is important in making our choices. LR (which appears to be fairly large) which opens up into a 'den'; then having a DR to the right of the staircase; and then talking about a 'media' room up in the attic might be a little 'overkill' unless you use the house for a whole LOT of entertaining. What I am seeing by just looking at the pictures, and the flow of the ones on this blog . . . looks like 4 rooms downstairs with a wide hallway. Correct or not? What happens if the winner has a family member who is 'handicapped' and in a wheelchair? Or not handicapped; but hates the idea of trudging up and down the stairs several times a day? You don't need but a 1/2 bath downstairs if you aren't going to have MBR downstairs. W/D on 2nd floor (good, until W overflows and ruins everything below).

Lenora on January 28, 2011 at 9:14 am
          • I've live in a couple of 2-story homes, a split level, and a story-and-a-half, and 3 one story homes. In the home I grew up in . . . had 5 bedrooms upstairs (the 5th one, for my grandmother when she visited). Only 2 baths (one downstairs and one up). Clawfooted tub upstairs . . . 6' long. Only a shower downstairs. You can't change the 'size' of the house; but the former CW Clinic I grew up in was about the same size as this house. The rooms were, at least 16' x 16' (with a huge bay window up & down). Ceilings 11' high, with 'picture frame moulding' about a foot down, no crown moulding; and 12" baseboards. So I think I have a 'little better' idea of size of rooms.

Lenora on January 28, 2011 at 9:20 am
        4. Is everybody seeing the date and time stamp for both camera 1 and camera 2?? For the last several days the date/time stamp and double arrows have been missing from camera 1 when I look at it. I am wondering if this is happening to anyone else??

          • Hi, Kathy . . . maybe YOU can answer my questions. I only use my computer for basic entertainment; but now I am so 'frustrated' with the site of the BLOG CABIN 2011; and can't get an answer from 'anybody'. My comments show up; not only under my 'name'; but also under what I use as my "User Name" and then it asks for my email address (which I put in) . . . and it will come up with a few things I can 'vote' on. When I get to the 'last' thing to vote on (ballusters) . . . the 'vote' page pops up very quickly, but then it takes me through the 'winners' and where my vote stands among them; but shows other things that either I have not voted on, or won't get the chance to do so.

Lenora on January 22, 2011 at 5:46 pm
          • Lenora, don't be concerned about not having a chance to win the house. It doesn't matter if you are registered as a blogger or guest. Everyone who enters has the same chance of winning this beautiful home. But we are not yet entering the contest for the home, that doesn't start until August, after the house is all refurbished. What you are voting on now is the choices of window style, flooring, paint colors etc. that DIY will use in the refurbishing. You may vote for choices ten times each day, so when the 'vote' page pops up and shows the results the window above will tell you how many more times you can vote that day. In Blog Cabin the idea is to let the bloggers vote for some of the features for the home that when finished will all be given away to one very lucky winner. I hope this helps Lenora, and welcome to DIY Cabin Blog!

          • Thank you! I finally got registered w/IntenseDebate; but now my name ??? is showing up as GRITSandSLUTS (an acronym) [nothing ugly] in some places and Lenora in others. I know I 'screamed' when trying to find out how to cast my votes and how to reply to other bloggers; and I apologize to ALL of you! I have 'finally' calmed down a lot. I'm very excited that this 'old house' is going to be 'saved'. My old 'homeplace' (built before the Civil War; and used as a CW Clinic was breath-taking as a Colonial-style home and later a Williamsburg-style. The church on the next block bought it from my Mother about 5 years before she passed away; and for the first 2 years, rented it back to her. By the time the congregation stopped 'fussing' about what to do with it; it was in such disrepair they ended up 'tearing it down'.

Lenora on January 27, 2011 at 10:30 am
          • So sad; and what was sadder, is that many of them went in and took chainsaws to take out the old mantels, millwork, etc; which the abatement company was supposed to 'retain'; they had already 'sold' some of it; and then had to go back and tell them, those pieces were no longer useable. They were to go into the old 'homeplace' of a HS friend in the house on the next block.

Lenora on January 27, 2011 at 10:31 am
          • I don't have a website; I've never had a "BLOG" and I feel very stupid asking questions that apparently others are used to. This is the first or second time I have gotten to this particular page. I guess I am still considered a "Guest". So are my chances of winning this house . . . slim to none? Are any of my votes being counted? Thanking you in advance . . . might NOT ever find this page again.

Lenora on January 22, 2011 at 5:46 pm
          • Whoa . . . isn't it? I am trying not to pull my hair out, nor pull anymore of my hubby's hair out. My question about the wood flooring is . . . just how much of the wooden floor already 'in the cabin blog house' would be able to be used? Just because the floors upstairs have been painted doesn't mean they can't be sanded and brought back to life. And . . . if 'anybody' can even read this reply; I know that the GRITSandSLUTS that is appearing up at the top of the blog . . . under Mary's name should NOT show "Dashboad/Edit Profile/Logout"; I have 'tried' to 'login'; I think I have been captured by the "Gremlings" and I'm stuck in CYBERHELL. Posting were 'finally' showing up here (under my name); and I have replied to Kathy Seals; but that was 8 days ago. This "IntenseDebate" site isn't easy for me, a novice blogger; with a disability that keeps me from reading pages of instructions, especially when I don't even know what they mean.

          • Thanks Kathy, past years there was a tab that said "cabin Cam".

        6. Two for two on the blog today. Could it be that the gremlins are taking a vacation? Maybe they just froze and are in suspended animation. I'm sure our blog friends from MN and points north are suffering worse than us in WI but -12F at the bus stop this morn was a nasty shock for the kids. Factor in wind chill and we're about -35 presently.

Happily we have PACKERS FEVER that, we hope, will warm us through a few more weeks if all goes well on Sunday. I'm sure our friends to the south are saying the same thing about Da Bears. This is shaping for a momentous sporting weekend in the upper Midwest. The oldest rivalry in the NFL but they have not met in a championship game since just after Pearl Harbor. Already there are Packers parties in several departments in my workplace and cars driving with huge flags in the football-crazy state. I suspect the party will continue, win or loose, on Sunday. Stay warm and safe everyone; enjoy the weekend and may your team win, whoever they may be. :D

          • Was -16* when I rolled out my garbage can this morning and we were seeing reports that it was -40* and lower without wind chill, in Rascal's neighborhood . Just a bit nippy!

Don't know about the rest of MN, but I'm routing for the Pack because I just like Da Bears so much less.

Don't over do the post game partying.

          • I suspected you were even colder than us. Fair takes you breath away, doesn't it?

Glad to hear some of you Vikes are with us. I hope it's a good game and not determined by the state of the playing surface or the stripes myopia. B)

            Stay warm.

This is WI. There's no such thing as overdoing a party, we just extend it beyond normal. ;)

          • In that last case; park the car, then park the keys and then forget where the latter are. Oh, BTW, that throbing you may feel the next day will be your body suggesting that you may have too much blood in your alcohol system.

          • BRRRRR! Glad I'm not there anymore… even though my heater quit working, it's only going to be NEAR freezing tomorrow night :)

          • GRITSandSLUTS formerly (or still????) known as "Lenora". Almost overnight . . . the 'Gremlings' they keep mentioning apparently captured me; and took me to Cyberhell. HELP! This is my first attemp at blogging; and so apparent that I don't know WTHeck I am doing. On the general 'comments' I think (??) I was GRITSandSLUTS; and then I got on this one, apparently with some people who really know how to manuver around; and when it asked for my 'name', instinctively put in Lenora; then IntenseDebate came up and said I had to register; now nothing is working right. For about 5 minutes, I couldn't even open any of the Replies. It is cold everywhere; even in South GA, we aren't use to having this many early evening/early morning 'freezing' or 'near freezing' weather.

GRITSandSLUTS on January 28, 2011 at 6:47 pm
          • Sure hope you'll forgive me when I say I actually miss the deep-freeze, can't-remember-zero temps! Definitely require bundling up supremely, but I'll take those temps over our many months of the year with 98-degrees-98-%-humidity-and-dead-calm! I'm just one of those really nutty people who have a polar bear nature, and truly love the cold, cold temps (and the snow). I wouldn't like it if I didn't have warm clothes to protect me, but appropriately clothed, I would spend most of the winter days in MN outdoors playing in several feet of snow! So my sympathies to all who are miserably cold … but I'm a tad jealous. Too bad we can't swap.

LilB on January 22, 2011 at 1:14 pm
          • Ummm,,,,, sorry, but, while I no longer play in the snow (and occasionally cuss about the frequency with which it's falling) I wouldn't trade to your weather. I don't envy the heat & humidity you "enjoy" (lol) and I get my dose of it every summer. The fact that I get four distinctly different seasons, is the primary reason I came back here after my active duty with the Navy in San Diego, all those years ago. Go ahead, be jealous.

DGustaf on January 22, 2011 at 2:38 pm
          • Thankfully, here in SW GA, we also get at least two distinctive season. Warm and HOT with a few days of 'very cold' . . . even had 2.5 inches of snow on the ground. We miss the 'fall' with the really pretty varied colors.

GRITSandSLUTS on January 28, 2011 at 6:51 pm
          • Boy this global warming sure is something! ^_^ I see it's supposed to be a balmy 20 degrees above at game time Sunday. I agree with Don. I'll take the Packers over the Bears too. Good luck to you Clive.

          • Well, I guess here in Syracuse,NY we are having a heat wave at -14 degrees:) Thank God they give us sports to keep us moving and cheering-Go SU basketball! Good luck with the football too:)
Let's all dream real hard now between shivers-BC/BM!

        7. Love these projects and voting on decisions. Would like to know how to register for the sweepstakes on the 2011 cabin. I am pretty much "road kill" on the information highway so I must have missed something somewhere along the line. Thanks Frank

          Frank R on January 21, 2011 at 4:41 pm
          • Sweepstakes is not open yet, starts August 18. Go to the "sweeps" tab and sign up for updates, you'll get an e-mail to remind you.

Mimitheminer on January 21, 2011 at 6:22 pm
          • I'm right there with you, Frank R. – I don't know how it works either. Half the time; I seem to be able to 'vote' the 10 times; but only after I have hit the BLOG CABIN button 10 times. I might not ever get back to this page again . . . since I really don't know how I got here as it is. I want to be in of the chance to register and 'win' the 2011 cabin. I've enjoyed reading the comments . . . but so many I can't read them all

Lenora on January 22, 2011 at 5:50 pm
          • For consistency I go to the DIY home page. Scroll to the bottom and click on Blog cabin. Then click on the blog header and it will take you to the most recent thread. Click on comments and scroll to the page you want. I can never figure out all the shortcuts and I would bookmark the wrong thing and get all confused. So I do it the long way and almost always eventually get to where I want to go. LLL

        8. It's always fun to watch the progress. Thanks DIY for the cabin cam!

        9. After reading the "About" on the right side of the screen, I was looking to see when the entering started for Frank R, ( I thought it was in August) and I noticed that they are doing it the same way as last year, with having the BM on other shows and a 1 hour special. I liked it much better when it was it's own series, BC 2007-2009. I wonder why they changed it?

vicki in utah on January 21, 2011 at 5:48 pm
          • My only observation about that is that DIY seems to have developed a policy of discerning what most of the fans love ( in decor, in cabins-vs-upscale-mansions, in locations, in voting procedures, and in the TV series, etc.) … and then doing the opposite.

LilB on January 22, 2011 at 1:16 pm
          • LOL LilB it sure seems like that's how they do it

        10. TO WHOMEVER IT MIGHT CONCERN: THERE ARE SOME "SERIOUS TECHINICAL DIFFICULTIES" ON THIS WEBSITE. I'M HAVING TO SEARCH AND SEARCH AND SEARCH AND LOOK EVERYWHERE TO EVER GET BACK TO THE PLACE TO 'VOTE' AFTER THE FIRST INITIAL VOTING. I HIT THE LAST "VOTE" KEY, SEE IT FOR A SECOND AND THEN IT DISAPPEARS WITH PICTURES SHOWING 'WINNERS' OF THINGS . . . BUT ONE OF THE SINKS ISN'T SHOWN IN THE VOTING SECTION . . . ONLY SEEING 2; THEN IT IS SHOWING FINISHED KITCHENS (NOT ON THE VOTING AREA AND A DIAGRAM OF THE KITCHEN . . . LOOKS LIKE 'EVERYTHING' IS FINISHED. WTH? I'D LOVE TO KNOW WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING? ONLY ONE VIDEO SHOWING UP . . . THE RAISING OF THE HOUSE? HOW LONG HAVE THEY BEEN WORKING ON IT? I DON'T GET ANY 'QUESTIONS' OR 'CONCERNS ABOUT THE TECHNICAL PROBLEM THAT I SEEM TO BE HAVING ANSWERED BY ANYBODY! JUST COMMENTS; WHICH ARE 'INTERESTING'; BUT MAKES YOU WONDER WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON WITH IT? I'D LOVE TO BE WATCHING A SHOW ON THE PROGRESS; BUT HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO FIND THAT EITHER, IF IT IS AVAILABLE.

Lenora on January 21, 2011 at 7:40 pm
          • To get to the voting, click the "people's choice" tab. When you get to that page, it shows the results of the kitchen voting, then you have to click on the tab that says "great room", that will get you the new vote. Yes, it's annoying and I don't know why they have it set up that way, but there it is.
