What Would You Ask the Builder?

I’m throwing out a call for questions we can pose to our able builder/contractor Charles Petersheim. Go ahead – post away! And take a look at Charles’ web site for more bio information – I think you’ll like his blog and the fabulous photos.

Is it possible to move the door that connects the kitchen to the garage into the laundry room to create a proper mud room and a more hygenic kitchen with no direct garage entrance?
Agreed
As before, I agree 100%.
I triple that!
Mr. Charles MIracle-Worker Petersheim, I triple-triple that request to move the planned garage>kitchen door and make it a garage>laundry room door. We are all amazed at how much progress you & your crew are making!
I'm also in favor of this change.
I second…3rd…4th…5th…6th this request!
I'm adding my two cents as well!!!
Clive, it's a secret but I do believe that door is being moved (or so Chuck said).
Joan, who is Chuck?
I would vote for that change also!!!!
Joan_LMT. Thanks I just saw that blog. I think Chuck (do we call him Chuck or Charles – does he have a preference?) is very excited to be part of this event (and why not?). I was reading some of his own blog on Catskill Farms site and you can't help but enjoy his enthusiasm for his work.
I'm really happy about this outcome and I believe the sweepstakes winner will be also. It speaks volumes for the persuasive powers of the bloggers when we agree and speak with one voice, whoever raises the first flag.
We will not win them all but it's great to know the possibility exists for change and reasoned argument still commands some attention.
This was the first question that popped into my mind. You beat me to it. Thanks Clive and I hope this happens.
I love that anyone coming in from the garage does not have to go through the laundry room.
Charles,
Can we look to using fiber-cement siding? The stuff is hail proof & bug proof. I know there's a budget to deal with but ,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Hear Hear!
I know it's too late for this request, but wish they would have looked into the log siding that is made from cement.
This is a really cool product that I came across.
http://www.everlogs.com
That's a fantastic product by the look of it and why not push for it, if not for this year then for the future cabins (hopefully)?
Cool product; There's a tall stand of old pines weeping for joy.
Kathy, thanks for the site. Not only is the product really cool, but there are some great homes in the photo gallery.
Here's a place in Wisconsin that uses the cement logs. Check out their pics.
I think I like the everlogs the best. jmo
http://www.log-crete.com/home
I agree, the log-crete logs are too uniform in shape.
Thanks for the info as always Kathy. I've always loved log homes. I never knew they made them in concrete. I went to the website and it was amazing. I like that you can get the look without all the maintenance of the logs. Also there is always a concern of forest fires but with the cement I would feel much safer. Thanks!
I second the motion to use Everlogs or Everlog siding in next years BC11! Great find on the link to it Kathy! Thanks!
Could we have an at the bar/counter stove ?
Cooking has become much more of a social event these days. With the open room floorplan it would so compliment things to be part of the events or goings on with guests while cooking.
Is the pantry next to the stairwell in the plans?
If so….Where will the fridge be?
Like the Green Home with down draft ventilation? Then the cook/chef/meal architect can actually face guests while preparing the meal (at least more of the time than with the present arrangement).
Exactly ! Thank You Clive.
Am I mistaken, or did the architect say the refrigerator placement is next to the stairwell?
Yes, the fridge, it's beside the stairs!
Yes, that's where they are placing the fridge.
BlognBob: I have a similar kitchen arrangement to the blog cabin. I use this area more for entertaining. Guests use the counter to munch on snacks and drink their drinks while I am multi-tasking in the kitchen. There is no room for cooking AND laying out snacks on my counter. Do you think your suggestion is feasible? I'm not sure how big these cooking surfaces are… Just a consideration…
I agree with your comments. I would also like to add the issue of safety. Kids like to be part of things too. Their papers, crayons and little hands may not be a good combination with a cook top accessable from all sides.
I have a down draft vent for my stove top. They S-U-C-K. Will never have one again!!!!!
"They S-U-C-K" ???? I thought that was what they were designed to do. L-O-L
My folks had a stove top at the bar like I had mentioned. The only problem was they had cabinets overhead. But it was very convenient for cooking time and conversing with others in the dining area as opposed to being isolated from everyone in another room.
An island stove allows any popping grease or boiling food that pops with the bubbles to fall on the floor and then be walked all over the house.
Looking at the image of the current flooring in the great room it looks in good condition. I know you will be laying new bamboo floor in this area but can that floor be salvaged and used elsewhere or offered to a local recycling enterprize?
The same goes for the cooker and vent which look in good condition, maybe a local charity (Goodwill for eg.) can take and resell these. However, those cabinets are probably only fit for the garage and barn afrer a coat of paint. (IMO).
second that!
Rob, those items are probably long gone. It would be nice if those floors were used elsewhere in the BC and those other items donated.
Good morning Charles! You may have already answered these but:
1. What type of light fixtures are there?
2. Is the barn gong to be worked on or is just the house being reno?
3. Is the guest bath just a tub or does it include a shower?
4. From the floor plans it looks like the back porch doesn't have any cover for shade. Will there ve a cover added?
5. Will the fireplace be set up for both gas & wood?
6. I know the basement will not be finished but what if anything will be done down there?
I apologize for any repeat questions. ^_^

I'm so happy you're feeding us again!!!!
Hi everyone!
My questions mirror some of those already asked but I will post them here, anyway.
1. As a vacation home I understand that storage space on the main floor can take up less space but would it be possible to provide some storage in the basement? I understand that there are no current plans to renovate the basement but I am absolutely sure that the team will at least clean it up before the show starts. I do understand that the winner can pay to have storage added but it would be a nice gesture to include even simple storage options.
2. Will the flooring we chose extend throughout the home or will the bathrooms be tiled?
3. I, too, would like the door going into the kitchen to be moved into the laundry room. This would provide the wall space needed to install a pantry in the kitchen itself instead of having to go into another room to access food storage.
4. What material will be used for the siding? We have fiber-cement on our house and we love the fire resistance and low maintenance of the material. We have lap siding on the main body, shakes on the gables, and board and batten on the second story sides and it looks beautiful on our suburban 'farm house'.
Thank you!
I agree Mary it would be nice to have some kind of shelving or closets added to the basement garages. Maybe some of the panneled hook storage systems: where it can be rearraged or added to as needed.
Will there be power to the barn if there isn't any now?
Perhaps , can we have water to the barn , with a thermal heat wrap for the riser so it won't freeze.
http://www.prothermind.com/SILICONERUBBERHEATTAPE… Again, not soliciting or any way affiliated with company.
You could easily run both at the same time if neither has been done already.
I hope he answers both of your questions as they both need to be addressed.
What will the primary heating and cooling system be?
Excellent Question Sally ! That one has me wondering too. I do hope the go with a truly efficient source.
Can you put two phone jacks in each room – 1 for the phone and 1 for the TV?
Therese do you mean 1 phone and 1 cable for TV? We don't plug our TV in a phone jack but into a cable thingy.
Sattelite systems ask the user to connect back via phone jack (especially if you want to order on demand programing)
Never had sattelite only cable so this was new to me – thank you Don.
According to those in the know land line phones will be museum pieces within 10-15 years. I wonder whether that will happen because the phone companies force it to happen or simply because so many have cells that the idea of a phone & jack will be forgotten.
I assume you're using dial-up for your intenet link or some sort of phone modem system or satellite rather than cable? Probably this house needs only one jack in the attic for each then wireless router would be the way to go. No cables, no jacks. no hassle.
