Floor Plans, Folks!
Good news: we just launched the DIY Blog Cabin 2010 floor plans. Take a peek at the befores and afters and post most questions for our architect right here. That back deck is gonna be sweet!

looks ok. can be fixed.the way youall do thinks it will look great
I was right the original hall bath is moving.
I LIKE THE MOVE OF THE KITCHEN.
The great room is.
And, it looks like some of what the bloggers are saying has been heard, by what I can see in the drawings.
Watson & Mary,
Thank you so much for the art work.
Don
I like the new floor plans. I think it's important to put a linen closet in the bathroom. Sure you can make due without one, but why would you want to if you don't have to? I do think it's important to have at least one good soaking tub in every house. You need a place to wash the kids and a place to relax, but it can be in a family bath, it doesn't need to be in the master.
Oh Christina I love the way you think. I agree a tub does not need to be in a master bath, as long as their's one in the home.
Also instead of a linen closet what about a stand alone cabinet in the corner. You can get some very decorative/stylish ones to go with your decor and not waste the space (studs, drywall etc. taking away sq. footage from the room).
DGustaf, I agree about the move of the Kitchen. By the garage when bringing in the groceries, on the side of the back deck for backdoor grilling convenience; KUDOS on this change!
I noticed what I believe is a solar tube light in the hallway. Sure do hope so. It is typically down this hall that tends to appear dark. Is that a pocket door that leads into the other 2 bedrooms; or, is it a beam? I've seen homeowners have this. Plants have been placed on the beam which made for a very nice touch. Again, if the solar tube is next to this, great lighting for those plants. ; )
The entry will be wider and brighter! More room to greet MORE friends and family.
"I noticed what I believe is a solar tube light in the hallway."
That's probably the hatch to the attic.
I love the plans; thanks for posting them. I especially like the deck access from the master bath and the walk out basement. I can't figure out what the the two boxes are on the roof. Can anyone explain?
I hope that we find out what the siding material is soon. I wish the kitchen was a little bit bigger, but the sit down island makes up for the lack of space.
CabinNester,
The "after" drawings show raised sections of the roof to allow an extended porch, taller windows and maybe, some lofting of interior ceilings. Hope that answers some of your questions and hope I'm right.
Don
Thanks DGustaf. Your explanation helps.
Also, I meant that I liked the deck access from the master bedroom, not the master bath in my original comment.
The new floor plans look great! I just think one thing is missing…a fireplace in the master bedroom. Looking at all that snow in your pictures, I think a gas fireplace would really be an asset in the bedroom.
Thank you so much for the Floor Plans.
They are greatly appreciated.
Hopefully now everyone will see the size of the Master Bathroom and decide that the Bath/Shower would be so cramped. The new floor plan shows how the Large Shower Only would look and it looks spacious and accessible.
The votes tend to lean one way, while logic screams this Large Shower only look. Go with the logic…homeowners will greatly appreciate it!!!
Thank you for presenting the floor plans. Guess my outdoor exit of the laundry room is NOT workable. What's a little carrying to a clothes line anyway?
Well to be honest I don't know what I think of the new floor plans. Looks better but I also think the kitchen is on the small side and without measurements of each room(or did I miss those) I really can't say. I will still keep voting and still try to win but I think as it is not anywhere near like the ones before if I did win it I would also be selling it as soon as possible. Please don't get me wrong I am all for recycle, reuse, be green, etc… but I miss voting on the style of the Cabin and everything else about the past shows. The only thing I think is better this year is the amount of land. Maybe when it is finished I will have to eat my blog! LOL
If you haven't already used all your votes, use the + in the corner of the room plans; there should be some dimensions for the bath. Using that information, I printed the plan, measured the bath and compared to the kitchen; my best guess is 12' x 14'; from wall to edge of breakfast bar and window to frige. Good luck.
It seems a 1/2 bath is needed near the laundry room because there is a lot of house on the back end and no wash room. Seems important to me.
I take that back if it means using that space for a pantry and putting the fridge in the space by the kitchen that seems to be the pantry. Would not want the fridge next to the stove.
Thanks for sharing the floor plan. I like the move of the fire place and kitchen. Across from the kitchen is the laundry room is one door. Is the other door a pantry? Hope this is not the refriger.
I know see why you are giving everyone a choice for the master bath layout.
I am curious…
After seeing the new floor plans, and getting a better idea of the Master Bathroom and if you were voting for the Tub/Shower option and/or the Shower Only with Linen Closet…Does this make you want to change your vote now to the Large Shower Only that has the two benches in it?? (that's the one that is shown in the new floor plan)
Kathy, sorry but I feel there is plenty of room in the master bath for a 5' shower and 5'5" bath, dual sink vanity. Not too keen on the proposed layout for the shower and tub. Our bathroom is 10' by 12' and we will have plenty of room for all of the above after we are finished. the blog MB is about 9 1/2' by 12'. It is interesting that the architects have a shower only.
Many of us bloggers concern is the layout of the tub/shower – it is not handicapped friendly. One of our wheelchair bound bloggers tapped out the floor plan (using the dimentions given by the architect) and found it to be very difficult to manuever in the space. The roll-in large shower was the best option, where she could roll in, turn around and get out easily (the tub/shower option didn't have enough room to turn around. She would have to back out and it was a weird angle making it very difficult). Plus the vanity area seems to be cut in half. I for one would much prefer a larger vanity. I don't want to bump elbows with hubby brushing our teeth.
So your comment about there being enough room would be fine for the non-handicapped. But how about our other bloggers who are HC? There are many on this blog that are wheel chair bound. Would you be willing to think about those issues and make this home a "green" home and handicapped accesible?
Joan, I'm all for universal design. Please don't think I'm not. I work with severely disabled individuals. I'm just trying to make a point that the design could be much better. A 5' shower is the standard for universal design and is in fact the minimum recommended size for a shower according to ADA standards. I wish I could draw out our planned bathroom design to show how it could be done. There are also several disabilities that benefit from bathtubs. That is one of the reasons I'm kinda being a pest about this. yeah – I know I am
But there is a tub in the main bathroom. Why have two when one will do (oh I rhymed) and leave the large shower only (steam hopefully) in the master.
Oh and with your experience would love your imput. I can only go by what our HC bloggers say, although just recently recovering from a broken ankle I would have loved a roll in shower.
Maybe I am looking at the tub/shower option picture wrong, but the numbers that I am seeing for the dimensions of that shower do not make it a 5 ' shower. One the left side they show a bench without measurements, another side is 4' 1 and 1/2", another side is 3'10" and the other is 3' 2". Shows what looks like the opening to the shower 3' 0" . Personally I don't understand how one side says one thing and the opposite side shows almost a foot shorter. It seems that this shower is very, very small.
Personally I like bigger showers. Especially when there is a bath elsewhere in the home. (jmo)
Kathy, you're right, the shower in the shower/tub combo isn't a 5' shower. I am saying they could design the bathroom to include a 5' shower and a decent tub. If the tub in the hall bathroom could be at least 5'5", then that could work. But it shouldn't be one of those tubs that are basically made for small children like you see in most hall baths.
We have experienced those children's tubs as consideration as a FULL bath and it was on the floor with most of the bedrooms. What made matters worse: the tub area was only four feet high that was tiled, so no showering was a possibility. Guess where most of us went to shower? Down to the other floor with a larger shower area. This is not just a humble opinion, just an experience to form an opinion.
Kelly, haven't you read and thought about LilB's comments re accessibilty with this option, or is it that you just don't care about that issue? Accessibility is more than adequate door width, and any one of us is just as likely to need it. There will be a tub in the second bathroom. Please think through your choices again.
Cheryl, please read all I have been saying before accuse me of insensitivity.
Kelly, I didn't accuse you of anything, I asked you a question re your rationale for voting for the tub/shower option…although as I re read, you never did actually say that you were voting that way, you were making the point that the room size indicated could have accomodated a larger shower as well as a larger tub. I am sure that is true, but unfortunately we have only the given 3 options to vote on, and voting for the tub/shower options shown is voting for the least accessible option.
Mary, thanks for the new floor plans! It's especially neat to be able to see them side by side, frame for frame, so we can make comparisons. I love seeing the small porch planned for the front of the house. It lends a lot more character than the former entrance. Also might make for a possible ramp to be added by the winner if wheelchair access is needed.
