DIY Blog Cabin 2010 – The Scoop

        Hey there.

It’s Mary here, the roving Blog Cabin writer and editor. Nice to meet you all and join in the blog-posting fun with Watson. I am popping in today to share some good news: We’re finally ready to announce the details of this year’s getaway. Are you ready?

We’re flipping the program on its ear this year. Rather than building from the ground up, we’re going to gut renovate from the inside out. We’ve chosen a ’70s rancher in upstate New York – Bethel, N.Y., to be exact – nestled in the shadow of the gorgeous Catskills Mountains. And rather than assemble one team to remodel the home from start to finish, we’ve decided to divvy up responsibilities amongst our most popular show hosts, based on their areas of expertise: Kitchen Impossible’s Marc Bartolomeo, BATHtastic!’s Matt Muenster, House Crashers’ Josh Temple, Yard Crashers’ Ahmed Hassan and Desperate Landscapes’ Jason Cameron. In each of five show episodes that begin airing in mid August, these talented guys, led by licensed contractor John DeSilvia, will completely transform the indoor and/or outdoor spaces they’ve been assigned. (Expect jaw-dropping before and afters!)

Two important things that remain unchanged? The first: We will rely on you to choose the products and materials used to renovate and update this vacation getaway. People’s Choice voting begins sometime this month. Keep checking the blog for updates and sign up for the DIY Newsletter to receive voting reminders. The second: You get to enter for your chance to win this fabulous home. You design it. We build it. You get to win it!

Are you as excited as I am? Pretty neat concept, right? Let us know your thoughts – the good and the constructive. And if you haven’t already, take a look at photo galleries we’ve dedicated to the home and the neighborhood.

          • Am so excited that it's in upstate NY! The location looks wonderful & peaceful. So many areas nearby to visit & enjoy. Can't wait to see the progress on this home. Thinking it would be the perfect place for me…well I can dream.

          • Welcome Mary and I would like to welcome myself to this project. I watch different HGTV shows but I just watched my first DIY in the doctors office today. I LOVE it! I love to learn and just enjoy all the wonderful ideas and skills that people have to remodel their homes. Thank you. I look forward to voting and seeing all the wonderful ideas that people have suggested for the cabin. So fun.xD

        2. Love the concept of renovating an existing structure. Especially is it has good bones.

Can't wait for the voting to begin.

As Carrie would say, I'm SECHI…

          • this home is so charming and adorable and in a beautiful cozy location! it is a much better idea to renovate an existing structure —improving & progressing rather than wasting great foundations. Upstate NY is absolutely beautiful all year. I cannot wait to watch & be involved this year!! Very exciting :)

        3. I love the first picture of the home – snow covered split rail fence, open space – looks very calming. Of course I don't have to drive in that snow but still a very pretty picture. Can't wait to see what you're going to do with the renovations.

        4. I love all the "before" pics of the home. And sitting on 5 acres is fantastic. The surrounding area looks lovely. I'll have to MapQuest and see how far away some of these places are from Bethel.

        5. Hello Mary, I'm SECHI, & just a lil confused too. Everything (policy wise) has dramaticly changed that's for sure. :) lol, I guessing that the home will be privately owned and feel like you will have more freedom to be creative and less restrictions. I am excited and (flipping for the chance to help renovate the BC) the home does have great bones as Lillie said and I can't wait to get started, vote and see what those handsome diy guys & intelligent cool bloggers has in store for BC 10.

        6. Awesome! Five acres along with the house, great! pics. The scenery in that part of the couintry is splendid..lot of snow in the winter..lot of color in the fall..beautiful landscape during the spring and summer. Watson, you are true to your word. You really did make a "dramatic geopraphic deaprture"! And Mary, thanks for the introduction to the 2010 BC. It going to be a very interesting year!

        7. Welcome Mary. Thank you for the update. I'll have to say that all this buildup and excitement was a little let down by the news. Guess I am a little confused. Is this to be the policy from now on? Flipping rather than building a cabin? I am glad about the amount of land that comes with the "cabin." Just last week I watched a program that said it is much better financially to start fresh than to renovate and remodel. Maybe tax wise for you it is beneficial to remodel. Or could it be that a remodel could be done by your experts rather tahn get into another mess with contractors who go bankrupt or experience financial problems. Perhaps I should just digest the news and maybe I will feel more excited after the shock wears off. Sorry for the negativity. But I'm just not too excited about remodeling.

          • Hello Hazelnut Deb, This is a change that will take a while to digest, but I'll bet they will do some Awesome changes ,and it will be almost like new, But , I do understand your disappoint,…..I wonder how old the home is ??

          • They do say it is a 1970's ranch.

NancyBee on February 1, 2010 at 3:45 pm
          • Thanks Nancy, I guess I 'm not quiet awake yet , couldn't sleep much last night , to excited, That slipped right by me ,even though I remember reading that now, they said a 70's rancher .I'll probably be in fog all day. *

            Ali B on February 1, 2010 at 3:59 pm
          • At this point Hazelnut Deb, I am with you. Will see what we get to vote on. This may make a reasonably priced home that a blogger could actually afford to live in. LLL

        8. Love – Love – Love when you start your new adventure! Your mind starts dreaming about maybe this time, IS IT!! Been with you all the way on each Blog cabin. Glad you change the way of voting ! Can't wait to help with the overhaul.

        9. Mary mentioned it was a 70's style rancher. So, maybe it was built in the 70's?

I'm really excited about the remodel. I've seen DIY do some incredible remodels. I mean "knock your socks off" stunning remodels.

I think it will be fun to watch how this years BC turns out for the bloggers and for DIY.

        10. Hi AliB
I think they said it was built in the 1970s

          Jennie /Florida on February 1, 2010 at 11:53 am
          • Hi Jennie/ Florida, I remember reading that now, but , Lillie 8 mentioned it saying 70's style , so it may be a newer home built in a 70's plan ,if I'm making any sense lol , I'm so slow this morning , no sleep last night, and No Coffee!!! Ahhhhh! , why did I decided to give coffee up for a while at a time like this !, I don't think that idea will get pass this day. * LoL

            Ali B on February 1, 2010 at 4:24 pm
          • Ali I think the kitchen gives away the age – with the color of the counters it had to be built in the 70's.

            Joan_LMT on February 2, 2010 at 4:56 am
          • Hey Joan, That is so very true , after viewing the pictures of the inside, I can see that
