Blog Cabin 2010: Where to Next?
Hello Ever-Engaged Bloggers,
The odyssey of Blog Cabin 2009 is essentially at an end. Now we wait for the winner to be drawn. Despite the challenges, DIY Network’s braintrust is celebrating a successful season and have already turned their eyes to 2010.
But the framework is far from being decided, including the location. You still have a chance below to lobby for where you would like Blog Cabin 2010 to be located. Considerations are being made, so let’s hear from all parts of the country! Where would you build the next Blog Cabin (and why)?
Cheers,
Watson, DIYnetwork.com Manager

Where ha, problem some where warm and cozy like S.C and hope someone does get to live in the home that part of the contest was a big let down but still like having too see and design the home so keep up the diy blob going and next year well be a bigger and better home.
What do you think of something different, What about a cabin in Key West or one of the Islands in the Keys.
Keys would be great – maybe marathon. When is 2009 cash award going to be announced?
I think the 28th, The drawing closed on the 23rd, They said they had 5 days to say who. If I read right
Not really replying to anyone. Just watching the Blog Cabin episode this evening Jan 4/ 2010 and was stunned to see the lack of respect for the chainsaw! No safety gear, no helmet or chip screen and starting the saw by throwing it away from you??? OMG! I am a professional forester and DIY really needs to get a grip on the safety issues surrounding this device. It is DEADLY! Promoting chainsaw antics such as this will get someone killed!
SC would be good. Too many of us suffer from cold 9 mos of the yr. A nice raised or terraced garden at the yard perimeter, with a small herb area off the kitchen would also be nice. And LOTS of sunny space in the back yard!
S.C. sounds wonderful. I would hope though that they would make it more handicapped friendly. I have a dad who is wheelchair bound and wider hallways, higher toilets, ramps to get around. Love going to cabins on vacations……but spiral stairways and too many steps always seem to be a problem
How about the upper part of Michigan’s lower peninsula around the Petoskey area. We vacation there every summer and it is a wonderful place.
I agree. Upper Michigan. Or Minnesota in Boundary Waters teriitory!
I second the motion! I was born there and my family and I vacation there every other summer! The summer climate is perfect and it is close to Mackinaw Island and many other fun tourist sites.
This sounds like an excellent place. I think that Michigan is a great place to live and play. However, it is exciting to see the log cabin episodes. Good Luck for anyone who is lucky enough to win. It could be you!
I think it should definitely be in the lower penisula of michigan like petosky michigan also i am a native of michigan myself and i know how beautiful it is up north and especially when we have the four seasons each and every year .so i agree that the 2010 blog cabin should be built in michigan.
Steve I think Upper Michigan's lower Peninsula or Northern Minnesota by The Gunflint Trail.
I agree Steve, I love the Petoskey area. The Ludington-Pentwater area is absolutely gorgeous with things to do all year round. Beautiful country, sand dunes and right on Lake Michigan.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrr ! Summers may be nice, but it's short lived.
Yes, the upper part of the lower peninsula is a wonderful place to find lakes and woods for a blog cabin.I agree with you 100 %
Yes that is nice, or Charlevoix, or Traverse City, or Bellaire, MI
These areas are all beautiful and know for cabin and vacation activities. Not to mention great summer and winter sports areas.
Watson — Thanks for the new thread, and the invitation for BC2010 location input! Since so many bloggers have asked for a location with both a lake and mountains, is there somewhere in the Smoky Mountains (again) that would fill that bill? Maybe on the Tennessee side this time? Or maybe farther up the Appalachians, even, in Virginia? Not a lake with a distant mountain view, I mean, but a lake (even a small one) that is actually IN the mountains themselves! I know there are such things, and the lakes are usually small, but small is good, too.
Pretty please — both lake and mountains?
While I’m at it, many of us have requested a BC built not in a development, but in a spot with a bit more land than just a yard, and without a development’s restrictions. I know DIY usually partners with a developer and builder, so this may be a pipe dream. But could DIY look into that? It sure has a lot of blogger support, if you’ve read the past 3 weeks of blogs!
Lake James, NC…Mountains..Lake…Last Of The Mohicans filmed here.
I agree. I still like the Appalachians with both lake and mountains. I'd like to see more yard area. Maybe near the Greensboro (east of it) or at the southern part of Virginia near the Roanoke. I also like the W. Virginia area too.
I was a little disappointed that the 2009 house didn't have more bedrooms. The 2010 needs at least 2 to 3 children's room or guest rooms.
Interesting choice Mai_L Huntington WV (is the correct spelling), the area is not in the mountainous parts of the state though. You did mention that you liked the Appellation Mt. The terrain there is flat and the attraction would be the Ohio River, Ferry Boats and Gambling. I respect your choice but wonder iwhat it is you liked about that area? I have noticed a resurgence in viewing this state as a next possible state to build in. I have looked for employment recently and that state has a good pool of prospects. On my most recent travels I inspected the more pertinent aspects of the state, living conditions, costs, employment, and so on, to find it an interesting place to live. That says the least about its more beautiful conditions: the mountains and streams. Glad you made mention of WV, it seems to be a discontented subject. I hope that that can be changed, it is a bad rap on such a wonderful and valid choice. Could you explain further why your choice in Huntington though. I am genuinely interested in your comments. I have my choices how to build too. A home needs lots of bed rooms. Check Dream home 2010 lots of BR.
How about Norris Lake in Tennesse near Knoxville. Great mountain views, lots of water and some challenging lots. For example, how about a place in an established subdivision, that is lake front, maybe even demolishing the existing home and replacing it! Know just the place if interested. Just started watching !
smoky mtns.is the best location without a doubt!! My family would move to TN and never go back to IN:)
I agree with this, I do not like developments, there are too many people around and if you are going to have your family and friends you want them to be comfortable and as noisy as they wish. and it still private enough. How about the smokies in Virginia. Indiana
I still like the Smokey Mountain/Blue Ridge area. A lake development would be nice. Hope you keep the value of the cabin modest enough that someone could actually afford to live there. Not too hot,not too cold, and not too expensive would be perfect. The standard luxury items are becoming passe. Craftsmandship and creativity should be the key words.
My sentiments exactly. A little mountain, a little lake; what an awesome combination. My family visits this area at lease once every year and I believe this is the perfect spot for the next blog cabin
I agree. There is so much to do on the Blue Ridge. A lake area would be perfect.
that would be sweet to have a cabin in the smokey mounain/ blue ridge area??????/
THIS WOULD BE A DREAM COME TRUE. A SINGLE LEVEL WITH SOME ROOM IN THE DRIVE OR CIRCLE DRIVE GARAGE AND SHOP OUT BACK
I would like to see Blog Cabin 2010 on Norris Lake in Tennessee with Lakefront property that has a boat dock. Near Tazewell. This is a great area with gentle rolling hills and beautiful mountain views!
Hi Patty,, My Daughter and her Husband have a vacation home at Norris Lake,, LaFollette at Deerfield Resort. We have been going there for a few years now. It is just a gorgeous area. There are so many deer around her house and Norris Lake is so beautiful. They are selling it this year to get a place in another area closer to upper Ohio. It has 6 bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths. So very nice will miss going there. Nice talking to you Dave—d48b52@ya
I liked “Fred’s” suggestion (last page of previous thread) of Gatlinburg, TN area as a possibility. It is gorgeous, and if DIY needs to partner with a development, the mountains around Gatlinburg are full of developments! (almost too many, for some) But it is gorgeous, and there are lakes in the area as well. It is right in the mountains, not a distant mountain view, which is good. Our own wee cabin (nothing fine) is only 31 miles north of there, and the mountain views, even from very humble abodes, are jaw-dropping. It’s a good BC location.
YAAAA!!!!! BLOG CABIN 2010!!!! Sorry, just got excited. My choices are (because the cabin will most likely be built back east) NC, KY, TN, VA or WV. Still thinking about opening a quilt shop. Otherwise, a cabin in northern ID, WA, AK. Please NO gated communities. (I can hope right?), at least one acre of land (me, I would prefer nothing less than 10 acres – no neighbors), close enough to a decent size town/city to find work (would like to live in the cabin), basically flat land to build a single story house.
This is a great idea. An actual cabin where you can SIT BACK, RELAX AND ENJOY the beauty of silence. Good job Therese. This is Jack, a former So Cal Res
Hi Bloggers, I would love to see the 2010 cabin in Michagan , on Harrson’s island in the St. clair river between lakes St. clair and Huron. The only way to the island is by ferry boat Danny
Hello Watson, thanks for giving us something to start thinking toward and looking forward to for 2010 blog cabin. I would love to see it built in Tn areas such as Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Townsend, Knoxville, Kodak areas, that is one of our favorite vacation destinations. The Douglas Lake area & then Tazwell is beautiful and good location too. (Yes, we like norris lake.) Even the mountains into the Cherokee areas of the Smokies. I particularly love the mountainous, eastern Tn and eastern Ky areas. Some of these areas are pretty remote though and soom have poor towns but beautiful properties. Ultimately, I’m from Ky, So, SOMERSET, KY please! We have land similar to Tn. Mountains, Lakes and wonderful farm lands, state parks here and close by, a great small to medium sized town we have here. Tourists come here all the time enjoying our lake and monthly car cruises. It’s a great town to live in and play in. My area is Lake Cumberland, Somerset area. I would particularly love to see blog cabin come here. But I know everyone has a favorite area and I’m open for any area. I can’t wait to see where diy picks to highlight this year. And would love to be able to vote on where it will go. Also see better descriptions and pictures of the land lay out this time round. I also want limited voting one per email address. Then Dale Hollow,(tn or ky side), Ky Lake, Land between the Lakes, Lake Barkley etc. All are wonderful areas for a small to medium sized vacation home. Any of these mentioned are a great place to be any time of the year, because we have all 4 seasons and boy can the bc be enjoyed differently throughout the year.
somerset is a fantastic area, near lake cumberland, burnside lake.also you are not far from lexington, weston ky.you pickit it is not far away.
Here we go again and isn’t it great! I didn’t get in on the voting last time cause I just got here too late. I think that with the difficulties of 2009 BC with developers or whatever, wouldn’t it be nice to find a spot with some acreage and near a lake or river. Why can;t all that promotion and advertisement go to the contractors who actually build the BC and to the Lumber Companies, roofing comany, etc. Wouldn’t that be better in the long run or am I just dillusional. I would love to see it built and someone actually be able to afford to live in it year round if they choose to. With developments, the costs are so high that most of us could not afford to stay there. Just a suggestion. KY and TN and The Ozarks in Mo or Ar would be great places to consider. Does it HAVE To be in the same area as before?
THanks , I can’t wait to see how this developes and Good Luck to the up and coming winner of the 2009 BC prize.
