A Word on the Outdoor Kitchen

        About

Blog Cabin is based on a very simple idea: Blog It, Build It, Win It! This truly interactive series asks internet users to vote on the design features for a log cabin from January until March 2009. Then DIY Network experts, led by licensed contractor Amy Matthews, build the cabin according to the specifications chosen by our viewers. Matthews and the DIYnetwork.com team keep the world updated on the progress all summer long with blogs, interviews, photo and video updates online.

Then, in mid-August, you can watch the entire construction process on the TV series and enter the sweepstakes for a chance to win.

        Hello Wonderful Bloggers,

Update (5/13/09): Be sure to take a look at the exterior construction photos fresh from the Blog Cabin build site!

Four of us were able to visit Blog Cabin this week for the first time, and what a sight it was to behold! Although there has been a great deal of rain, work on the cabin pushes onward with high spirits. The surroundings are breathtaking. We were able to take some new photos which we’ll share with you next week – and perhaps even some video.

I was able to gather some insight on the issue of the outdoor kitchen being moved. Builder Phillip Richardson looked to shed some light on the matter:

“The decision was made to move the outdoor kitchen to the main level deck, outside of the main kitchen, to be closer to the food prep area. Even with outdoor grilling, there is a fair amount of prepping of food, and some items are grilled and some are cooked on the stove or oven for the same meal. It was decided it would be more practical to have the outdoor cooking area closer to the indoor kitchen for convenience.”

Hope this helps – have a great weekend – more images (and video – fingers crossed) to come next week.

        Best,

        Watson, DIYnetwork.com Manager

        1. Watson, thank you for getting the info on the outdoor kitchen move. HOWEVER, I personally would much rather have the outdoor kitchen where it was originally planned – on the lower level.

Some of the bloggers had suggested that perhaps the placement of the outdoor kitchen could have been voted on, if not too late perhaps that would be a good idea. Let the blog cabin bloggers vote how they would like to see the blog cabin outdoor kitchen placement.

        3. I’m liking Phil’s way of thinking, exactly right about being able to get everything in the general area.

        4. I think that the move to the main level was a good decision. I know too well how often I walk in and out of my own kitchen to our patio grill with trays, food, and ’stuff’. The winner can always purchase their own BBQ equipment for the lower level…this stuff is just not that expensive to purchase unless you want granite counters and a Wolf grill! Then you’re on your own dime. :-)

        5. hey, great thinking. Use an economy to scale. Whatever happens, inclement weather, allows transfering hot, warm or cold food to a like appliance (fridge, stove or microwave). Also if you guest list expands on the fly, additional cooking or cooling devices are just a sliding door away. Great contingency plan.

        6. What a great idea! I like everything in the same area. Less footsteps to complete a meal!

        7. Hello Watson! Thanks so much for getting the info out to us about moving the outdoor kitchen to the deck.

However, I agree with Joan. The outdoor kitchen should have been left at the lower level where the designer had originally placed it.

I just don’t like the idea of having all of the outdoor cooking equipment placed on the deck, possibly obstructing the beautiful view.

I still believe stairs, leading off the deck to the lower level, would have been the best solution.

The upside to all of this…if I win, I can have everything changed to suit me! :D

        9. Happy Saturday one and all,

Doesn’t look like the bloggers will have their way on this outdoor kitchen question, folks. C’est la Vie! As Lillie 8-) says, if you win, and decide to keep the cabin, change it. Same goes for the stairway from the deck.

Watson, glad you had a chance to travel to the homesite. Is it a long way to go for the DIY staffers? You’re all in Knoxville TN, right? No wonder the twins aren’t involved this year.

Love to all celebrating Mothers Day tomorrow.

        10. Thanks Watson and others for the info and I am looking forward to the new pictures promised next week, and finally viewing a video. I personally think it’s ok that you guys moved the outdoor kitchen upstairs, in the long run it will be better for entertaining for all people on feet or in a wheelchair. I just hope it goes on the kitchen side with that bar and grilling deck, I suggested. Right outside the kitchen door and we keep the view out the back deck unobstructed and for entertaining/sitting/eating/ relaxing by the fire. Screen in the lower patio please!!! Also next year if some change this big comes about! can we please put it up for a vote. Make the bloggers happier and make them feel more a part of the whole process. What’s that smell at the bc? IS it a bbq or a big surprise somehow? 8)
