Hi, I can't figure out how to participate. When trying to leave a comment it wants name, mail (email or physical address?), and website (what??). Anyway, I want to comment that the Blog Cabin needs an outdoor shower.

WV girl and karla,
I just happened to stop and check this line because I saw there had been entries added. You will get more responses and see what everyone else is talking about by going to the newest entries. People have been using it the most.

I love reading these blogs. This is my first time. One question. Do you ever think it might be possible to vote on the cabin, contents-all of them- and let people vote as usual and then let the winner of the contest have the cabin build on THEIR property?
I would love to win one of the cabins, but there is no way I would leave my WV hills. My home was built in 1922. The walls were put in first and then the floors. In the back, the walls or the floors sit on 4x4's on the ground. You guessed it. The wood has disintegrated and has sunk 3 inches. Doesn't sound like much until you want your furniture level.
We'd love to fix it but half of our retirement was lost in the stock market and just can't do it. But I sure do think it would be beautiful on our 7 acres. Think about it-it would be a GREAT IDEA!!! Thanks for listening WV girl

Hi--First time blogger here. Would it EVER be possible to go through all of the picking everything and then the drawing of the winner -- THEN -- build it on property they own? I love my state of West Virginia and don't want to leave. But I sure would love to see one of your beautiful cabins on my property.
I would even opt to pay for the removal of my 90 year old home as it is not in real good shape. The back of the house has sunk 3 inches and after the stock market upheaval, we cannot afford to have it repaired. Three inches may not sound like much until you move furniture around and have to use pieces of wood or whatever you have just to level a desk or anything else.
Thanks. I also have lost your channel because of cutting costs in our bills. But I still check in on you site by computer. A fan--Sharon

Joyce LaBree: It doesn't appear that the builders or Architect on this home are going to use any solar. It's not been mentioned and they have already installed the HVAC and hot water system so presumably no solar or geothermal.

There are DIY plans for solar power. A 'Google' search will give you quite a lot of plans from various people. They usually cost a little bit to get the plans but the best give you the part numbers and where to purchase the items including the panels themselves as well as the wiring design and where best to place the panels.

Before doing all that you may well be advised to ask your local energy provider what information they can give. Most give a mass of free and good information and advice including selling any surplus energy you may generate back to them. Being local they can tell you whether the initial cost of installing will ever be recouped in lower energy bills. This is a big consideration and one many people completely overlook. If the panels have a lifespan of 25 years but it takes 30 years to recoup the costs of installation they really aren't worth it from an economics standpoint. If, however, you want to be green despite cost then they may be a good idea in this situation. Look for big federal and state rebates available until the end of 2010 for installing solar. The federal tax credit is 30% of the total purchase price of an installed system (or parts) and some states give additional and even bigger tax credits too.

Dear All - wanted to know if solar energy is planned for the home. Also wanted to know if there are DIY kits that could be used by the typical homeowner who wants to be powered by the sun but doesn't really understand how the tech works. Am excited to see that there are contractors out there that deal with making a home not only environment friendly but fully functional as well. Thank you for this site. Joyce
