Hello Mighty Bloggers,
Following the success of our architect Q&A, we’ve decided to go back to the well and check in with you for a chat with the builder. Phillip Richardson of Greenstone Builders has graciously accepted our invitation to fill in some of the blanks regarding the construction process.
I’ve always been fascinated in how a house gets built … with cameras rolling. It’s an extraordinary challenge, and Greenstone Builders has stepped up to the plate. Write your questions below and Phillip will try to answer as many as he can. His answers – along with a couple of slideshows from the build site – will get turned around asap.
Cheers,
Watson, DIYnetwork.com Manager

Phillip Richardson of Greenstone Builders. thank you for taking my question. Do you know yet whether there is going to be steps off the balcony on the back of the cabin? The balcony looks so private where there is an offset from the porch that wraps around the one side and does not connect with it. My preferences are to not put stairs as they will block the view in the lower level make the area below cluttered with construction and the openness without them is simple and it will take away from the privacy and security of a non accessible balcony.
Watson this is a question for you: My blog about a “print contest” for BC Bloggers posted on April 16th, 2009 at 7:15 pm, if you could take a look and let me know if this is possible. I would love to do this and give a second print to the winner of the Blog Cabin in the fall. It would give us something to do that is not too far off the beaten path of DIY’s theme.
Watson: Hello Suzan, I’ve responded to you in the previous blog entry – didn’t want you to miss it.
Watson the correct post for my question is April 16th, 2009 at 6:55 pm. When I RE-READ my post I noticed a discrepancy in times and rechecked. I copied the wrong post.
Mr. Richardson, thank you for taking our questions.
One of the big topics has involved what environmental friendly and sustainable (aka green) products and steps are being planned for and used in the building of the cabin. Could you give us a run down of what has been planned?
My question is how many steps to the front porch? Will you be filling in around the front and side of the cabin?

Mr. Richardson I am new to the blog cabin and enjoyed voting on many of the features. What I can view so far….LOOKS GOOD!!
After viewing the video cam and all of the photos, I noticed that there is a mountain sloping towards the cabin. Is there going to be a retaining wall along that side of the home?
Thanks,
Roz
Mr. Richardson, I am enjoying seeing the build of the blogcabin come to life on the cabin cam. It’s a fun surprise to see the change from day to day. I Can’t wait to see more of it through the website and eventually the filming and series. Would love to see it in person also. Progress is moving right along. Looks good! Thanks so much for all the hard work your teams is putting into the home. We blog cabin fans appreciate all the hard work and time you all are putting into the Blogcabin. It’s also nice to know that it is a green build & healthy home. ???? I was wondering, what is the green board being used on the home instead of the usual house wrap we typically see? And is the decking, a wood or trex type boards? What type of windows are you using? And has anything changed from the original blueprints?
Mr. Richardson; Thanks for opening up for questions. Will there be a workshop area in the basement or will it all be “man cave”? Every house needs a work shop area to fix things that break or get bent? So far, everything, “looking good”.
Neat idea Watson! Thanks, “Mr. Richardson” for building the Blog Cabin! How are you finding the process? Is this build different from others you have done, and if so, in what way?
Gail
Now that the shell is almost up, any chance of putting cabin cams inside to show interior construction as well?
